🔥 Kult of Kaos, get ready to spark a discussion about the latest Ashes of Creation world boss, Firebrand. MMO players seem to be on edge, ready to criticize anything that comes their way. While there’s definitely room for improvement in the recent showcase, there’s some context that needs to be considered—especially with the missing PvP dynamics that could make or break these encounters.

🔴 World Boss Comparison: I’ve put together a side-by-side comparison between a WoW Dragonflight encounter and Ashes of Creation’s alpha dragon fight. This isn’t about Elden Ring or FFXIV’s instanced raids—this is open-world, PvP-tinged chaos versus polished, years-old content. Let’s see which one truly stands out. Does Ashes of Creation have what it takes to redefine open-world bosses, or are we looking at another loot pinata?

  1. Hey Kaos could you do this for a bunch of other content / class showcases and with other games like GW2, AA, BDO (if there is any comparison possible with this one)
I guess it's a lot of research work but no one does this in the aoc community, it would help us compare systems easily

  2. It's a good comparison cause it shows how biased ppl are to what is known and comfortable. The big mistake I feel alot of ppl are doing when talking about AoC is that they pick one system, or one feature, and compare it to how it would fit in to other, already existing games, instead of looking at the big picture and how it will fit in to AoC when it's done.

  3. People don't seem to realize that this is a 20th level raid, without the pvp aspect on an open world boss, on a game still in alpha testing. It looks great of course there are things that need to be worked on but that's what Ashes open development is all about. Feedback. Great comparison btw. Looking forward to testing these things in a real setting.

  4. Few things I think Firebrand needs, persistence of the ground fire effects. Massive knockbacks on tailswipe and the jump.
Other than that, lets be totally realistic here. We're looking at a 20 year old game vs. an Alpha!

  5. They both look like that. There is nothing different or interesting AoC fight brought other than visuals… it was like watching 2004 all over again. Who the hell wants to play that?

  6. Haters gonna hate but a pretty high percentage of them will be there at launch.
Too many people fear the death of their game if something new and exciting comes along, for me I honestly want to see all MMO's succeed so companies might be encouraged to create new MMO's. But unfortunately not all MMO's are created equal and the hunt for huge profits outweighs making a decent game.

  7. I think once people start seeing the pvp side of the game and how it will interact with the open world pve boss then they will start to understand why you cant have anything super complex (one can hope anyway)….plus this is an early level raid. Like come on people, guild wars 2 early level open world bosses are not any better.

  8. Nice side by side. Comparison.

I agree; this is not an end game, boss. They are iterating on this event and asking for feedback so they can make changes. It is not the final product. The Ashes LV25 boss compared to Dragon Flight World boss; it is no contest. The Wow loot piñata stands there and takes damage until it falls over dead. WOW, it is more static fighting, repetitive rotations to max DPS, heals, etc. Wow offers fun raids and is a good game for the gameplay style, but GW2, BDO, and others provide real-action combat. I prefer more action-based MMORPGs. Having the ability to move, cast freely, and dodge is liberating. I like the direction that Ashes is taking with content. Mobs, in general, are not limited in their mobility.

Imagine the thrill of a competing guild showing up while you were fighting the Dragon in Ashes. This potential for dynamic and unpredictable gameplay is one of the most exciting aspects of Ashes. The direction in which Ashes is taking combat and the showcase event looks promising. With some modifications and input from the community, this could be a thrilling early-level raid for lv20-30. And when you reach the Max Level Ancient Dragon, it should be akin to the End game dragon events in GW2 and the End game raid events in Wow. These high-level fights are where you layer on all kinds of mechanics to win, and this should be a standard feature in any MMORPG worth is salt.

One thing about Ashes is that the game has improved every time they have a showcase. Let the doomers be doomers. You can never make people like that happy, so why try?

  9. This is a bad comparison. If you are going to make a comparison then you want to steelman it as much as possible. WoW isn't exactly known for it's open world content. You should really be comparing it to something like GW2 which is known for having reasonable open world content. That said, this is comparable to that WoW fight, and should be because open world content necessitates a certain amount of faceroll. Not least because you can't control the environment. "Difficult" mechanics, assuming you can get 'pugs' to even perform them (good luck) also become great opportunities to grief/troll. The industry standard is easy world bosses because that is what the players have demanded, not because devs can't make them.

You are also hyping that this is a low level boss. You shouldn't be. This will be dead content. It's effectively a waste of dev time. Unless it drops something that high end players want, like crafting materials, it's going to be ignored by leveling players after the initial few leveling waves. It won't be worth the effort to round up all of the players to kill it. It's what always happens. The incentive to kill it simply won't be there. Look at that stack of people, and how little loot it gives. Why would I go out of my way with a zerg of players to have a 1 in 10 chance to gain an item I may use for ~10 levels? Just doing what I was doing leveling would be a better use of time. I even agree that this sort of stuff is fun. Unfortunately, the rest of the player base won't agree. I have personally seen it across too many games.

I wish Intrepid would learn some of these lessons rather than demanding they be taught the hard way.
