IMO node progression will /have/ to impact player's ability to do things they want to do. If it doesn't effect your game, what's the point?
One disadvantage to rushing levels is that it will be difficult to change your skill choices after you make them. You could easily regret your build, if only you had known earlier.
The more ambitious you are, the more your will depend on Node Advancement. So if I do recruit a mercenary group to join me in Ashes, we will definitely want to be tied to the biggest Node we can find, or even better, a pair of large Nodes close to each other.
In the other hand, if I enter Ashes naked and Guildless, then I will be content to wander about, finding my own character, friends, and home.
In no scenario do I see myself limited by Node Progression, assuming I can eventually be a Citizen of some Node.
locking people out of content now and again is GOOD design. Theme park MMO lack depth, lack meaning and after awhile just become stale. Having content lock and unlock allows for a dynamic world and makes content more enjoyable because you worked to unlock it, and its not always available. Forbidden fruit always tastes better.
