Combat is one of the most important components in an MMORPG. Is a “Hybrid” system the way to go? Action vs. Tab target who will win? In this video, I break down several combat systems from MMOs including Star Wars: The Old Republic, World of Warcraft, Lost Ark and Final Fantasy 14. How was the first impression from players? Let’s talk about it right here on Vlhadus Gaming!

  1. Imo Tab targeting has already won the battle. I say this with the caveat that it will be a primary tab system with action combat trappings.

Ground targeted spells and abilities, dodge, block, and free movement while attacking and casting most skills will create an action feel while still adhering to the majority of the rules and systems that a tab combat game typically does.

  2. WoW is undeniably THE benchmark for combat fluidity and will remain forever because it reached that peak. Be it action, tab or a hybrid, fluidity needs to strive for what WoW has. Steven is already moving in the right direction with hybrid anyway as they've dumped lunges and sidesteps for split body animations. Honestly, if their netcode will be up to par, hybrid could prove optimal.

The other, main factor, is visual feedback and this is where WoW took a downwards spiral. Vanilla had simple, but distinct visual and audio effects. Further down the road, with new spells and new classes original effects developed into overly flashy and pointlessly elaborate. Keep it simple, keep it direct. A sword swing is a sword swing, not a flash of light from left to right.
