With everyone eagerly waiting for Alpha 2 for Ashes of Creation, I wanted to make a video about how the A2 testing should be conducted. Should you be able to test everything once Alpha 2 goes live or should you be limited on what you can test? Both of positives and negatives towards the development and towards the tester. I will go over why Ashes of Creation’s Alpha 2 SHOULD be limited in Alpha 2 Testing! Thank you to all my subscribers and the people who have supported me and my channel through this rough time of no content. I will try and give you my best when it comes to talking about Ashes of Creation and what Intrepid should do in regards to their development of the MMORPG. What is Ashes of Creation?
Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMO experience. Our world structure is dynamic and built to react to the actions of our players. Cities will rise and fall, their populations based on the history of the world as the players create it. Quests will unlock as these populations gather, their needs grow, and secrets are unlocked. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real time, players will have the ability to destroy what they’ve created, paving the way for new development, new populations, and real change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your world. Gone are the days of static worlds, change is here to stay.
Risk Vs Reward
All across Verra, you have the opportunity to experience massive warfare, participate in epic trade caravans, and gather valuable components to craft exquisite items. Not only will your fellow players be your adversaries; the creatures of the land and the very environment itself will pose a constant and fresh challenge. Will you siege castles to become royalty, defeat other guilds to showcase your prowess, shape the marketplace by being a successful trader, or earn renown by developing your artisan crafting skills? This is your story, you tell us!

Player drop off will always be a thing even in testing. I think the best thing Intrepid can do is give good direction on what they want tested. Ofc the normal player experience needs to be tested but if they launch a new system into A2 after its already out maybe set up another server to allow people test that specific thing before it get integrated into the regular test servers. This allows us to test the system in 2 phases. However they do it I would love "testing request" from Intrepid so we can give good feedback on what they are wanting to see tested and broken…cause that's our job, BREAK EVERYTHING!!!! 😀 Great video Vlhad!
A testing roadmap for A2 when it launches would be poggers
Alpha 2 testing is probably going to be open to test. I don't think Ashes will have phased testing…
The most consequential failure mode is the response of the players and the node system to the actions of the players. They must test the "natural" behavior of players.
I agree with you that Alpha 2 might best proceed in focused waves of directed testing.
Paradoxically, they need both.
Maybe other people will burn out fast. I've been playing the same MMO (different genre) for the past 12.5 years. I can't wait for Alpha II to get rolling. I'll be happy to make the change for such a multitude of reasons that there is no way on Earth, Verra, or any other planet that I'll be tired of Ashes before launch. Also, if Intrepid deliver on their promises and the promise of what we've seen so far…and if they stay the course and just continue to be who they've been as a company so far thru development I'll be good for 15-20 years going forward. If I was 17 and not 40 something I might be far more prone to losing interest thru the process. But I feel I've done enough homework on Ashes, and seen enough to know this game won't burn me out. I can't speak for other people but I'm really looking forward to my Ashes journey getting started. Whatever I can do thru testing to help them put out the best game possible…and as soon as possible I'll gladly do.
I'm an alpha player of Bauldur's Gate 3. I understand burnout in a single player game. I'm hoping that the social environment of a MMO alpha will keep the burnout at bay.
In my opinion a targeted alpha would be the better way to go, multiple phases targeting on different systems. The beta testing phases can be more open letting testers go where they want.
It is Alpha-2, you are not "Playing the Game". This is only a test. If you feel burnout, stop testing and wait for Alpha-3.
BURN OUT? WHATS THAT? ASHES GON B THE GAME I PLAY FOR NEXT 15 YEARS. IM NOT HIGH ON COPIUM, U ARE!!!
They definitely need to do it in stages, rather than a full drop of all content and I'm pretty confident they will do this that way you direct the player to test specific systems built and changed bit by bit and nothing is overlooked, rather than drop all content all at once and have systems get overlooked leading to less testing and shitter outcome for launch. I think it will be ready for launch within 2-4 years maybe more depending on how testing goes either way I'll be happy once alpha 2 is here, with alpha 2 being next year Q1 or Q2
Great video mate
I think its geneerally better to just have open ended tested, you get natural player behaviour + feedback. If you get burn out I mean that's up to your own responsibility, go take a break. No different to people that get overhyped, you got to take some personal responsibility about these things.
makes sense for there to be some restricted gameplay for testing purposes, but how the game plays as a whole also needs to be tested, even if it's towards the end of alpha 2. i would even be fine with periodic wipes and setting characters at certain levels to get players to test certain portions of the game and not get attached to characters, but somehow someway the gameplay as a whole needs to be tested during alpha 2
max 2 years i hope :(. but if they need more ye ofc thats better but hopefully we got it in 2 years or not too much longer
Pretty sure they said alpha 2 will be persistent till the full release of the game and will become a testing grounds for patches on full release. , I don't think there will be burnout for alpha 2 and if there is the amount will be negligible because it cost $250 to get into alpha 2.
The systems are so interconnected that it would be impossible to only test “naval aspects“ without other systems such as harvesting, refining, crafting.
Perhaps the obvious solution is a combination of persistent open tests and spot tests for the targeted attention.
You could even disguise it within the open persistent alpha by using events. Better yet a schedule. Hey here is a schedule for the next week of events i.e. saturday 7pm for siege testing. Sunday 3pm combat testing with a tournament/arena. An area for season testing to test transitions for a few hours.
Then save long term testing for the persistent alpha such as weather system and its integration with the other systems.
Your timetable pitch for Alpha 2 is exactly the sort of thing I'd like to have in an Alpha experience. I don't want an open game, I want to do everything so I can find what I like and don't like about the game's projected features. I want them to force me into the naval aspect so I can be sure how I feel about it.
To put it frankly, I am not excited for any one feature in AoC. It's weird that I put it that way, but that's how I personally feel. For example: I am not into the idea of naval combat. It doesn't appeal to me. Still, once the game is released, there will be a world of endgame content for players who put a lot of time into naval content. If I say I don't like it now, I'll likely never try it, not even once.
If you were to ask me what I want to do in the game, I'd have a hard time answering, yet I'd have to do SOMETHING, or I risk wasting my time doing nothing of importance, both for me or my account. Railroading players into a specific aspect of the game would help give them an idea of what experience they can expect while also helping the dev team tweak and fix their game.
Basically, the less I can do in the short term, the more I will likely do in the long run.
Ah, nothing like thumbnail clickbait.
Love this perspective, something I hadn’t thought much about.
It’ll be hard to get burned out I think, due to all the different systems and evolving the game will do- I think one of the main reasons Steven is making ashes is to make a game people won’t get burned out on; but anything is possible I suppose. ☺️
I’m just excited to play! No way will I get burned out (maybe check back in 5 years 😝)…
If they do open testing, it'll be a lot of data to process for sure. With the way the game is set up I almost think open testing would be best, to see if the systems will truly be able to do what they were designed for. I'm definitely most interested to see this node system in action
I mean I’ll probably play it for a decade or more so I doubt burnout applies to me 😅
I think Intrepid has shown they have plans for each system and sub systems and that will extend to alpha 2. I've been in closed beta testing before can't say I got burnt out on it by launch. Alpha 2 is meant to be a persistent alpha to beta 1 IIRC and I'm sure they have a bunch of criteria that will show them internally when they have reached the end of alpha 2 and the requirements now say it's time for beta 1 etc.
As always, very informative video.
You underestimate a WoW player’s ability to play a game without getting burnt out.
I really want to be an alpha 2 tester
A2 is for testing, and it will take at least 6 months.
Do NOT buy A2 to play the game. Your job is to break the game so they can fix it.
i dont like this kinda vid. pulling something down when its not even up yet. anyway me out
No, no I don't think I will.
