What Went Wrong With the Ashes of Creation Alpha 2 Reveal?

The past few days have been very eventful for Ashes of Creation. The alpha 2 announcement went contrary to how it probably should have. I don’t think Intrepid is out to get us, but I do believe the communication needs to be refined.

  1. It came across as disingenuous. They should have been upfront and said "Hey, I have been funding this personally, but servers will cost and we need the money" Obviously you would need to phrase it better I am not PR guy. However point I am making is the reason it came across badly is because they gave reasons that might be true, but obviously weren't THE reason for charging that much.

  2. I have something to say to ones who said 120 is expansive: A2 will last a minimum of 1 year and 7 months. If you divide 120 by 19 months, you paid something like $6.31 dollars a month. Plus, add betas. Which the length is unknown at the moment. It's cheaper than a monthly sub. Cheaper than Netflix or Disney +.

  3. Well, the usual crowd of suspects have been very quiet, they have been shut down by month after month after month of banger live streams from Intrepid.
Now that they think they have something to crow about ,they are crowing as loud as they can.
And then we have large content creators farming the controversy for self gain.

  4. I think the 3 day testing is to make sure the server meshing works correctly with the influx of players and to get that really nailed down to be working as intended with more players online. It gives them a chance to have all week to fix things before the influx happens again. I feel that this in the long run is the best for full release. If they can nail down server stability having mutliple instances of a big influx of players it helps make sure the build is up to par at launch with even more of an influx of players. If we want the game to be good and run good we have to sacrifice some playing time to do so. But what do I know I am just a gamer who dabbles in Unreal Engine.

  5. I don't get upset about these sorts of things because I have healthy perspective, an incredibly handsome body I must focus on keeping fit, and a beautiful woman that would look at me in a concerned fashion were I to get upset about these sorts of things.

  6. Lot of talk about the alphas but I want to see more substance before the alphas start. Animal husbandry and hybrid animals. Taming. How about more on the Tulnar race. I can understand them not being implemented by the alpha but they sure as hell should have the concepts and design done. Where are the drawings and the pics? I'd like to see more than 3 concept head shots and a toe. What about augments? Will the Underrealm be able to be accessed from all the continents? Seen very little on special augments especially those granted by religion. Speaking of religion are we going to get more on the types of religions out there and both the benefits and augments they give? How is fishing going to work at sea? Types of boats? Weapons on boats? Can we grapple and raid ships? Even if the alphas are released on time we are going in very very blind. Understand that much of this has to be worked into the alpha for testing but the concepts should be finished for them to at least talk about them. I did like that they talked about the caravans but that is only one of the many many things they said would be in the game.

  7. As bummed as i am its not 24 7 from day one i am not suprised. when i originally brought the key 18months ago i figured it would be on and off as it was worded to incinuate that. I personally think the 3days on 4 off for the first 2 months is kinda good. means we can get in as a community. Smash content and report bugs. Their team can then smash out bug fixes in 4 days so when we log back in the game is moving forward. Other wise they risk people logging in and going this game is shit to many bugs etc and then not testing for the duration. Their content release schedule is also good as it shows they have a plan to consistantly update and add content. I think to many people are just to used to things being completed when they are released. This is an unheard of development style where we are all included and know almost everything about the plan for the game before its even out. We have been spolit with details and information and show cases which i absolutly love and wished more games did this. But its also meant that we as a community are having different expectations for a game that is still in early to mid development phases. But what would this aussie know.

  8. I think my post on Twitter addresses your persistence issue really well. And I would be annoyed as an early backer for the cost to be lower than they are for the keys. This price doesn’t give everyone and their mom a key but only those like me who truly want to back and support this game. Also let’s say the a2 last 2 years— that would be $390 of a wow sub, but you only have to pay $120. It’s a good price (also I’m sure you know the keys now also give beta access)

  9. OMG, "The goal of Alpha-2 is to be as persistent as possible, but there may be necessary wipes during testing."
WHY do so many people fail at English Comprehension?
Keywords, "goal", "as possible", "necessary wipes". ALL of that tells you it's "tentative" and "ideal", yet we KNOW they have had couple of setbacks in the last three years.
The persistence they are describing is the Character Data, not the world setting. LOL
I hear your point and agree, it could have been handled better. HOWEVER, complainers are going to complain, it's what they do. I certainly don't need to defend Intrepid.

  10. As someone who's worked in game development myself, i don't think there was anything wrong with the information presented in the AMA. However like most products there is a difference between insider knowledge and outsider expectations. I think the biggest problem they had was getting outsider information.

Eg. if they emphasised earlier that the alpha will last at least one and a half years (wich is the minimum of P1, P2, P3 combined, and during the price reveale emphasised that 120 dollars would be equivallent of 8 months of subscription, while getting double that in testing time, people would have thought of it as an excellent deal with just a little bit of information rewording.

Now for those who still think that the price should have been lower, remember that (Stevens own words) the project has now costed 85-90 million dollars. With 30 million due to presales, 30 million in investments, that means up to 30 million is due to banks/investors.

Banks and investors get weary if there is no payments or sign of revenue. with a 5 to 20% interest, your talking about 1.5 million to 6 million a year in intrest alone. Wich means they need to get up to 60k key sales just to pay one year's rent.

So what happens down the line? With the new one month of subscription included and the packs also including subscription (of various amounts) intrepids post release income seems skewered. I imagine that the alpha followers and players are the people who will stick around for the game for a substantial length, at least till their subscription runs out. with 1, 3, 6, or 9 months of subscription tied to the several keys and packs, intrepids income will be a lot less then people assume due to the first quarter of the release. If you assume 6 milion of intrest, 6 million of operating cost yearly with a 100k of your subscribers not paying for your first quarter, and a 70% (industry standard) dropoff rate, you will need an initial player amount between 2 and 3 million players, just to break even on operation cost and intrest alone. If were only talking about monthly subscription.

About 2% of those will buy cosmetics, and about 2% of those in a large amount.
The'll be able to make more money in various ways from selling assets / programs / code in UE4 & UE5, Twitch, Youtube and other platform income, either by providing content themselves or a share due to the content creator project, but their main income will be by MRS (monthly recuring Subsriptions) and cosmetics. And wich each pack containing now subscriptions and embers, the initial income of those will be less then originally planned, and thus less then prognosed by the banks.

With these player friendly changes, from an industry standard they are deliberatly placing themselves into rough water financially. Now ive been avidly following the game for over 4 years now, so i'm pretty confident they will not only make a game that has the potential to win every game of the year award, but also set a new standard, and make a financial success out of it. However these decisions based on community feedback might be detrimental in the long run. What if the community says, other games charge me 12 dollars or 9 dollars a month why do i need to pay that much, or they include x dollars worth of cosmetics. Cause those sentiments and interactions could cause the game to have to shut down earlier in the long run. I don't want to play ashes for a few months or a few years, i want the to be game and economicly health enough so i can continue playing it for the next (few) decade(s)!

  11. I appreciate the solid way you addressed the issues with the delay and other issues. Some bummers, but not the end of the world and by no means a reason to lose faith that Ashes will be a great MMO upon full release. Its why we signed up for Alphas in the first place, to help in that journey, not to play yet.

  12. They have created a financial incentive to now delay the "launch" of the game for as long as possible to sell as many alphas keys as possible. Change my mind.
