The Alpha 2 Mage for Ashes of Creation is set to be revealed this Friday, April 28th, 2023, in the monthly developers livestream. And as the mage being one of the classes I tend to play the most, I have some thoughts on what I want to see in this reveal.

To be fair, I don’t really have very high expectations for it. Most showcases so far were pretty generic and the only actually good ability was that jump one from the ranger.
Rooting for the best but without much hope lol
LOL – You dont want to be rooted when casting but you more rooting abilities… Let's aim for balance
As long as we get something along the lines of the Ranger showcase, we'll be fine.
HUUUGE disagree on rooted/channeled casting. The reason ranged classes have to stand still to cast abilities is because allowing unlimited free casting makes all melee classes stupid and inferior. You're a sucker and at a huge disadvantage if you play a melee class in a game where ranged classes don't have to stop to cast their abilities. Intrepid releasing this game where all the ranged classes just perpetually kite and blow up melee classes desperately trying to get in range will be a death nail for the game.
I love mage, but mage is so different from game to game. You never know which version of the mage you are going to get. Is it the AOE Nuker that sits in the back, or is it the mage that blinks all over the place and loves to slow their target down. I'm hoping for the latter.
I hope they won't just spam the same ability on the same mobs for 40 minutes talking about a system that has nothing to do with what they're showing on screen

I think that hard CC, especially in a PvP game is a bad idea. There's nothing fun about dying because a group of five players are stun-locking you and preventing you from doing anything
L Take, sorry. Mages should NOT be mobile while casting. The entire fantasy of a mage is a distance nuker. You need counter the mage by getting in their face and disrupting their attacks. If the mage can just cast while kiting you, it defeats the purpose. Mage should have escape abilities (like blink) that they use to get out of the way and create some distance, but they should 100% need to have a cast bar that they complete in order for the main nuking spells to go off.
Imagine Boss mechanics in place where the mage can just be spamming their spells while moving in the battle. Never having to stop casting and reposition and then begin casting again.
Time and time again in games you hear don't let the caster just nuke. It's because that's their class kit. Sit and nuke people. If you let them do that, they will do a bunch of damage. Which is why you to to counter that by forcing them to move. There should be some spells that they can cast while on the move, that have controlling effects. But the big spells should have a cast bar and should require you to remain in place to cast it. It doesn't need some grandiose floating effect like the alpha footage had originally. Just some sort of chargeup. That's what your doing, channeling the arcane to create a bomb to launch at people. That's the class fantasy people want.
I want to see their cast rates, and all the different elements. Just see all the tools they have planned for the mage and if they are including anything different from other games.
I not only want to see the mage using multiple elements, but even more magic than just the elements. I want to see rune usage, utilizing them as traps, or rune summoning. Placing a rune on the ground that explodes like a bomb when an enemy steps on it, or rune summoning when the enemy gets close it shoots a magical sword from the circle. Could be a unique secondary class combination, like mage and fighter. I just want to see more than just the typical mage using the elements. There's more magic types that Ashes can take inspiration from.
We are never getting this game 😂😂😂
The poor combat for the mage is the one thing that's keeping me from getting hype about the game, the combat was Awful. Combat needs to be fun for all classes not just one, shitty mage class is something that disappointed me for GW2, I hated the elementalist, it's such a poor mans mage. Then again so is the tank and healer in that game. Hoping Ashes doesn't try and reinvent the trinity and keeps them in their proper roles. Healers need to be able to heal and keep people alive, Tanks should be able to tank damage, keep aggro and not die, Damage dealers should be able to hit and run dealing out the damage while being mobile since avoiding damage and dishing out damage is their best defense against dyeing.
Range casters in ESO can move. They bridge the gap by having gap-closing move like shield charge and teleports. I bet, the sub classes will add these mechanics to range and melee actions. Additionally I bet that pure classes like fighter-fighter will be at a slight disadvantage as far as utility. goes
I tweeted them asking them to talk about mage augments even if they have nothing built and they tweeted back that they’ll send the request to team. So I’m hopeful there is a good chance they’ll give us some new info there.
Personally, I don’t want to see much natural CC in any archetypes kit outside of the Tank. I’d like the Mage to be a “Master of Synergies” and CC or other added effects come from weaving multiple elemental spells together.
I also hope every archetype has a unique secondary resource pool in addition to mana tbh. I’m a firm believer that variety is the spice of life.
Finally, if weapon combos are not at least in a similar vein as DCUO, then I will 100% agree with you. Different weapons become monotonous to weave into spell combat. But we’ll have to wait for Alpha 2.
I would love to see a big aoe focus but also just a wide variety of spells. I feel like the last time a game had a unique take on a Mage was Dragon Age Origins. So many games water it down to a fire, frost, and sparkle machine lol. I also reeeeally really hope they incorporate weapons into casting animations 😅
