Wooohooo!!
AI in gaming will become a necessity. It will be objectively cheaper to have AI voice overs for all NPCs than paying people to do voice stuff. As well, the complexity of AI will allow varied kinds of content. Imagine AI adapting to how skilled the player is working through the content and matching skill levels or perhaps AI overriding NPCs to interact with the world.
I think AI could be used for town and shop npcs. However, real actor voiceovers should be used for the storyline and world altering events.
I have no issues with AI Voiceover as long as the training voices are ethically sourced. I believe they said they were sourced internally which is great. I hope they open it up so the community can submit their voices to help train the model. That would be a neat way to let the community get involved while also adding the necessary data to train the AI Model.
Kaos crew lessss goooooo
AI in gaming is the future, one way or another. Will be insane whenever we can talk back to an NPC and they'll respond to anything. (not happening in ashes most likely, but just thinking about this is kinda crazy)
Saying "No AI! It will take jobs." Is like being against cars cause it will take ferrier (horseshoe maker and lots more) jobs! It is the future.
I am two minds:
-I want the game to come out faster and Intrepid to save as much money for future development
-I have several friends who are voice actors and AI crap is ruining them slowly, so enjoying the game that has AI voice over feels like I am backstabbing them.
Not gonna lie, I am conflicted AF about this.
AI in gaming will just get better. As long as actors are still in control of their IP, I’m fine with AI for voices or for all manner of details and programming. It’s not wrong to use AI. It’s only wrong to not curate AI. If you just ship it, you’re gonna end up with lazy work.
It's not a problem if they use it for something that VAs already see as a chore. Like voicing random NPC in backwater village.
As for anything else, like AI generated imagery or music for example-Thats no from me.
I stopped listening several music artists that I have been following for over a decade just for using AI generated album cover, so dropping AoC would be nothing to me.
No issues with AI VO. Love that Intrepid developers are the base for the AI voice.
As long as the ai voice is seamless and not done bad i would much rather the devs focus on gameplay and such and let the ai run the dialogue
I think its great that they keep talking. Now you can sort your inventory during there time while listening. Haha
Using AI for NPC emersion in towns, villages, cities, and random grind quests is fine. I would use EQ2, Wow, and other MMORPGs to voice-act for major story arcs and quest lines. Take Black Myth Wukong. It was a fantastic RPG and Baldur’s Gate. I would be willing to pay an extra 1 or 2 a month sub to get top-notch voice acting and cut scenes. We want as much emersion as possible in this high fantasy world as we can get. It would be a shame to have Unreal 5.4, Season, dynamic events, nod wars, Air, water, land mounts, sea combat, underwater combat, and other top leading edge game tech to let voice acting and cut scenes be integrated half-baked or left out altogether. If Ashes is genuinely going to bring the next-gen tech to MMORPGs, why stop at 80% and leave out voice acting?
Another thing I am super excited about is the verticality of the maps. I love Baldur's Gate, which has all its hidden passageways leading to the Under Dark realms. I was all in when Steven said they would add layers to the main starting map, such as delves, dungeons, caves, caverns, and hidden locations. Got the Buldar's Gate vibe when he said that.
The Alpha II map looks fantastic. Being the size of the New World game map, there should be an expansive area to explore. I hope early access testers realize this is not the finished product. It is the last time Intrepid will spend testing and making significant changes to core fundamental Tech if needed.
This game is looking more and more like an MMORPG. We See Progress every time they release a podcast.
That would be cool if Aches of Creation could pay for a few fans to come by their gaming studio and add their voice to the game and see what going on behind the scenes and pick the minds of the fans. I would also love to add a few of my different voices into the game.
Personally, I'm not a fan of AI in creative works in general. I love a game with VO work in it, but I feel as though listening to AI talk to me in game would suspend my disbelief a bit. At that point I'd rather just read. But to each their own
I am torn between embracing AI (in general) and being very worried about it.
AI no doubt can make a lot of positive impacts in so many industries… my concerns are… every single thing it does takes work away from at least one person… potentially a family.
I think AI could have at least the same impact on software development (and more) as that we saw in the automotive industry with machines.
Where is the line, because lets not kid ourselves, all of this is purely for one thing and one thing only…. money.
if they use AI that gives a chance for them to use some dev voices and stuff, less time with voice actors and contracts and getting them in studios means the game comes out quicker
Have people complete a major task in the game, and they get to Voice act Raid Bosses, or the Final Boss of the raid. That would be cool.
To be honest. AI has been in gaming for years, it's just widely more known now in a consumer level now. Randomly generated maps have used AI, interactions with monsters, NPCs, and dialog, sounds within the games, weather patterns. It's just now that it's at a level of being delivered as a product a lot of people are really upset about it, because it seems scary.
People may say "Oh that's not the same" But it is, it's just evolved into more specialized tool that requires less hands on work. It still needs human eyes to check it over and help train it. It uses generation models to create voxel worlds, and character interactions. Jobs becoming redundant is a part of these tools growing but it's not a job loss, it just means learning the new tools we're given. AI can be seen as bad, but it's making games far more easy to develop and keeps costs down.
