  1. I watched this in chunks between bouts of housework. The two points I recall at this point are: 1) Ashes is not an innovative game. By and large, it's systems and features are facsimiles of previous industry practice. The Node system is the single feature that might be considered innovative, though it could be argued that the Node system is simply a higher degree of simulation (IRL, human settlements do not spring forth fully formed and organized, but grow (and decline) organically and this is the process that the Node system simulates.) of the static town/city landscape element that exists in all MMORPGS. Therefore, it should be expected that Ashes will be subject to the same behavioral forces that commonly enable the Meta mentality.; 2) Quantity does not matter, only Quality. If the eighteen ability options are not all equally effective at advancing player objectives, which change over time, and vary from player to player in detail, but are in aggregate over time the same,, there are not, in fact, eighteen options but whatever number are equally effective. In, my experience, that would be a small fraction of the total. And, unfortunately, balance considerations tend to cause skills in MMORPGs to be copy and pasted between classes with a slight reskinning. So that each class would have available a stun, a root, a knockback, a ranged attack, etc. As experienced game programmers tend to have a toolkit from which they draw to to provide solutions to design problems, I would not expect a great deal of innovation in the design of Ashes' Archetype abilities.

  2. ๐Ÿ˜Great video! We have chatted about the Meta builds as well and how Ashes may or may not go about combatting this. We have ultimately come to the conclusion that if there is one, its player created/defined.

I actually didn't even know what Meta stood for, so thank you for sharing haha.

  3. I really enjoyed the video, especially by including your personal examples from your childhood and from your past games.

Meta builds are a direct outcome of the lack of diverse content. A dungeon grind for a magic user should be just as rewarding as a different dungeon designed for a melee chsracter. So you can play the style you want without too much penality.
