I’ve been thinking about what the MMORPG genre will look like a few years from now. And.. well, that spawned this video. A video about my history in the MMORPG genre (World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Black Desert, Elder Scrolls Online, Guild Wars 2, Perfect World, Tales of Pirates,) how MMOs are currently being developed (mostly) as cross-platform titles (Tower of Fantasy, Ashes of Creation, Blue Protocol, ODIN: Valhalla Rising, Ragnarok,) and where I think we’ll be a few years from now. What do you guys think?

  1. I've been thinking about what the MMORPG genre will look like a few years from now. And.. well, that spawned this video. A video about my history in the MMORPG genre, how MMOs are currently being developed (partly) as cross-platform titles, the types of MMOs indie devs are delivering, and where I think we'll be a few years from now. What do you guys think?

  2. I have asked you before but can you make a video explaining your perfect mmorpg? everything you want in the game and what you like from previous games. i could talk for hours about combat and thats only one part of an mmorpg.

also your thoughts on upcoming mmos and how they will impact the genre. for example ashes of creations artstyle looks like it will feel outdated after a few years but isnt this the wow killer? that should have a minimum lifespan of a decade?

  3. After 7 years I am still happy with my GW2. The next one I insist on trying is Blue Protocol for when it will be available. I still miss Souldworker, but I look forward for the new release. In the meantime I have made a list of over 400+ MMOs (RPGs, shooters etc) and I have started a series on youtube. In each episode I will randomly select a game, play and review it from the perspective of a new player. Episode 1 arrives next week 🙂

  4. My opinion / prediction of the future of the MMORPG market:
    – 1: WoW and FF14 will hold most of the market and slowly have it's base dwindle due to lost interest.
    – 2: "Hopefully", 1-2 new games will hit the market in the next 2 years that motivate half or more of the player base from #1 to leave…and stay gone.
    – 3: The rest of the games launched / in development will starve and die. 3-5 games will be sustained with a niche following with BTP / FTP models.
    – 4: Games of this genre in development 5 years from now will be cut by half. That number will stay half permanently and / or scale down from there.
(Do I want this exact thing to happen. No…but the "Crowdfund and run, scope creep, and never finish to begin with", approach isn't sustainable…)

  5. The very phrase "indie MMO" should immediately raise alarm bells for absolutely anyone because these small teams would certainly need to become much larger to handle th live services requirements of an MMO. It's not just a case of renting a cloud servr from Amazon, rebooting the servers once per week for maintenance and throwing out some updates. Not all.

It's the IT admins, the customer service team, the cybersecurity staff, the GMs and the developers themselves. MMOs are a huge undertaking and you should never expect an indie team to be able to achieve the basics requirements of running a live service

At the absolute minimum you need those studios that are AA developers rather than AAA studios. Groups like Pheonix Labs who created Dauntless have shown that they can operate an MMO but hen you look at how slowly the game grows you can appreciate that you shouldn't have high expectations from these medium sized studios.

So to all those fools who ar crowd funding MMOs from obscure indie developers and showing off AAA quality visuals – stop lying to yourselves.

  6. genshin impact gameplay and user interface is really good without all those autoplay function eventhough its a cross platform game… agreed tho its business model is kinda milking the players out of their money. if a cross platform mmorpg can have good gameplay and experience as genshin. that would be really good already

  7. I think the true next gen MMO is somewhere between valheim, what Chronicles of Elyria promised and what Camelot unchained is promising. It needs to have a highly customizable world have a smidge of difficulty and have systems in the game to make it feel like the players make a difference. Ashes of creation is going to be another theme park MMO at its heart which makes me a little sad but I think that's the best one on the horizon.

  8. I think the trick is going to be how to make a MMO that is not a traditional MMO and is the future of MMO. I think BDO had a bit of that, which is what made it popular. I still have reservations whether AoC will be able to break that mold, like it might be good but again just following the formula.

  9. A fantasy/sci-fi version of GTA V with an anime-based and fast-paced fighting system as well as Genshin Impact/PSO2/Blue Protocol graphics would be amazing.
Think of the RP online worlds people could create. Story mode is single player and online is pure fun.
Maybe even add some monsters and stuff that are randomized outside of towns that just roam around and you got yourself something amazing, especially with some raid events that appear like once a week/month, or siege events with monsters.
A quest system to slay certain monsters would be cool, and in online versions you could have a player-based economy based off of drop items and artisan crafting stuff. A separate dimension could be where you customize your own house with the items you gain, and can bring people you invite over whenever you want.
There would be no classes, and equipping different weapons changes your attack patterns. If possible, perhaps the change in weapons changes your class and you can upgrade your skills based on the weapons you use. You could play as a thief if you wanted! Wanna be a murderer? Go ahead! A Guild that protects its citizens? Join them and defend everyone!

  10. As someone playing mmorpgs for over 20 years I still prefer open world pvp. While I can appreciate the pve content, pve content alone is not enough for holding my attention. When I finish the content I never log in again.

I like that pvp forces players to interact with each other. Whether its teaming up with people for safety, or teaming up to bully it adds to the experience. Compared to a game like ff14 where you can complete it without talking to a single person.

Some of my most memorable mmorpg experiences come directly from overcoming pvp experiences regardless of the times it adds frusteration. Rf online, Perfect world, aion, tera, rohan, none of the newer pve focused games hit me like these games did.

Still waiting for a new age open world pvp game.

  11. I think that you're experience of preferring PvE as you get older is probably to do with PvE being a more consistent experience. With PvP the playerbases, gameplay metas and general community attitudes change over time whereas the PvE experience for a lot of mmos stays relatively consistent and often tends to improve in a lot of cases.
If you ask me, I would say the best way to implement PvP is through a system that combines PvP and PvE together, not with the AI being a separate faction but with them being aligned with players factions, that way it allows pretty much all players to find a place in a PvP environment even if their individual ability as a player is not strictly PvP. Having said that I imagine it would pose a problem if they tried to do PvP arena combat.

  12. I'm 42. Never been competitive in my life. In fact I have actively avoided it. I hate pvp and always have. I much prefer co-op pve. It's what really made me fall in love with mmorpgs in the first place. Grouping up with strangers across the world as a team to beat monsters and bosses.

  13. I'm at 2:19 in the video… and I gotta say, it might be just you man, I've been competitive ever since I first help a controller, and that competitive-ness has not gone away in 30+ years, PVP FO LYFE!!!

  14. Your right about most things you said. I dont think that cross-platform to phone ports will work long term. People will realize the limitations in content eventually. And as i write this you hit my point 😂😂😂. Also, as p2w and micro transactions grow each year older players will begin to walk away as awareness grows. We’re in an era of unprecedented greed and unfinished releases being put on the market

  15. I never liked the idea of mobile mmos. Kinda looses the feeling of connecting with people. Sure you got an online chat for some but voice chat specifically tho. And brs although I don’t care for them I would think that at some point a mmo did something like this before or incorporated a pvp element like brs. Yet all these other brs are just going ham. I think mmos have a place in gaming and hopefully they don’t die. But the problem nowadays is people don’t want to grind and work their way up to things. They want be good and be the very best at that very moment.
