Maybe I’m being too hard with basic attacks because they are needed but I wouldn’t want them to go away? I’m sure they can help in those really dire rotation situations but is it the best rotation strategy is the question.

I could go either way.
In ESO you have to do a basic attack after an ability as a form of animation canceling to get your next ability out faster. And I can't say I mind that at all.
But in BDO you don't really use your basic attacks unless you're out of resources. Then you use them to gain resources. But in BDO you typically use ability after ability monitoring your cooldowns and animation canceling abilities
For me, Basic Attacks should only be used when starting out and as a Oh Crap moment and not part of a standard rotation. While not optimal, there should be other attacks to choose from without resorting to the bare minimum.
