Asmongold recently commented on the art direction in the upcoming MMO Ashes Of Creation alluding to the area shown in the Cleric archetype showcase being non-memorable or lacking identity (while overall being satisfied with the showcase). Just wanting more of an identity from the art design. Vhladus Gaming recently wrote a Reddit Post and did a video about this (all links below). quit lying the game does not look phenomenal
It's rough around the edges art wise and it's 7/10
compared to the most beautiful games ever made this game is horrible looking almost
has no bearing on the game overall but keep it real.. it isn't beautiful beyond comprehension
Let's just be honest here. "Stylized" is just a polite way of saying cartoonish. When you see cartoon graphics in an MMORPG, you know that you are in for a cartoon experience, not an immersive, alternate fantasy world that can drive your imagination to thoughts of heroic deeds and thrilling struggles. Cartoon games are all about collecting bits of nothing, on a boring daily basis, in one way or another, and do not create the type of amazing experience that people sought when the first MMORPGs came online. The highest fidelity and quality in computer graphics ever achieved, exists today, not in 2004. Games that choose cartoon graphics today do so because it's cheaper, faster, and easier to program. Realistic graphics, especially in UE5, have the potential to create mind blowing vistas that will astonish players for years to come. Every single vista in Ashes of Creation may not rise to that level, but there will hundreds that make players stop, mouth agape, and be truly amazed.

I've played a few UE4 online games and yes the character models look nearly identical. The world however is where Ashes stands on its own. In the end though Ashes will not succeed or fail based on it's character models, It will succeed or fail based on Intrepid's ability to deliver on the systems they're designing meeting the level they're promising.
Plenty of people still play WoW and it's art is at a level below current day generic, basically barely above bland which is in line with the minimum effort AAA game companies put into their games nowadays. The excuse to defend it is that it is "Stylized".
