Tank Showcase 2.0 Live Watch | Ashes of Creation Tank Update

So, Intrepid Studios decided to reshoot the tank video due to the lackluster reception the original one got during the Official Livestream. I have to say this one is 1000% better. This time we were actually able to see bits and pieces of what was going on, because we knew what was supposed to be going on. Its hard to give feedback on something when you have no idea what’s going on with it. So, good job on Intrepid’s part acknowledging the first one was bad and then reshooting this to get feedback.

  1. Steven said he likes putting on a performance of a player not really playing at their best which I can understand but I had an idea of maybe at the end of the video they do a short gameplay montage in the hands of a experienced developer. The fighter showcase done by Steven and the fighter gameplay in this video is like night and day. I hope they consider just adding that little change to the videos going forward.

  2. Regarding the Aegis skill:
I do think that it is a decent skill right now. Keep in mind that your “aura” idea can also be used if you put more points into it or some kind of augment.
Now, the way the skill was used here was kinda bad lol. Ideally you’d want to make Steven take aggro and rotate the mob in a way that only he is face to face with it and everybody else should be attacking from behind. That’s just Tanking 101 and that way “Aegis” doesn’t have a very good effect.
However, in a pvp scenario, I can see raids having both engaging tanks and defensive tanks. In order to protect your back line from those flanks a Tank would use Aegis and stand in front of the attacks.
Again, of course they could change to a “movable” Aegis but I think it’s okay right now and you could change it with augments/extra points.
    Anyway, just some thoughts. Xoxo.

  3. That shield skill seems to be a situational thing, and these are not the situations to use it 😛
I can see a shield like that having a function when there are boss mechanics where a projectile is shot at a random player ignoring aggro, or PvP situations where people aren't going to glue themselves to the tank like the AI will.

  4. 23:25 – Overhead hammer should be like 20-30% smaller, go up at the same time the characters arms do, and hit way closer. It hits way too far away.

49:43 – Is it possible that the tab/action ability balance may be different per class? Its possible that tank might lean more action based while others go in a more tab direction.

  5. Hey J,

Do you think maintaining aggro should be a part of tank gameplay?

I personally think aggro should be fairly easy to maintain and effort should be focused on proper mitigation strategies.

  6. Hey J, great analysis on the re-recorded video. I want to point out in regards to tab discussion combat late in the video. Could it be possible that not all Tab oriented abilities are implemented yet or that Steven just opted to choose more action combat oriented abilities than tab target? They did say that action/tab hybrid would consist of 25/75% in either direction. Right now if we consider the amount of abilities on the bar and what % is tab vs action, we can see that 1/6 is Tab (which is 16.67%) and 5/6 is Action (which is 83.33%), but if you notice the 7th slot on the bar is unused and just has the mount slotted. So maybe they just didn't have all the Tab oriented abilities in this showcase, because if we calculate 2/7 Tab abilities would bring the split to 28.6% Tab vs 71.4% Action, which falls under the 25/75% rule. Maybe, I am over analyzing this, but it would make sense. Either way, it's a valid concern for Tab users, but lets wait and see if we get clarification.

  7. I thinkk you are looking at tab/action from a wrong perspective, having target requeriments doesn't make the skill tab or action, in GW2 all skills are softlocked, switching from tab to action just changes camera control, if you have reticle you play action if you don't you play tab, and as a source, I'm playing GW2 while watching this… Anyway, to me combat in ashes looks exactly like GW2, with an exception, some skills in ashes seem to require a target, so if anything ashes is more tab oriented than GW2.
