So Steven Sharif from Ashes of Creation just made a statement in an interview recently about how his game is going to be “one of the largest and most successful” MMORPGs on the market. Really?

I’m all for creative directors making bold statements to drive hype and share passion for their project, but it’s statements like these which always make me cringe, because if your project ever suffers even the most minor of setbacks, these are the statements that come back to bite you in the ass.

There’s no doubt that Ashes of Creation is poised to be a successful indie MMO, but “one of the largest and most successful” remains to be seen, and your own internal metrics aren’t what determine that. The market determines. And as we’ve seen from many games like New World or Crowfall, even having big pre-launch sales doesn’t enable you to have an automatic hit on your hands.

  1. Yea, Stephen Sharif needs to reel it in a lot. As someone that has been developing MMORPGs both network and client technology for 18 years now, I can tell you that many things that he is pushing will collapse under modern network technology. One of the biggest aspects of the game was shown recently, that being a video of 1,300 instanced skinned-meshes as if that will function with networking. Processing large amounts of animated and synced player data sees massive data queues as more and more players need to be updated. The larger the data queues become, the more clients will just start to experience extreme translation inaccuracies that will require tons of extrapolation and interpolation that will be nearly impossible to smooth. WoW's tech does an outstanding job of managing this load; often making hundreds of characters vanish from large clusters of grouped players.

Someone on that team with technical knowledge needs to step in and inform him as I believe he's unknowingly misleading potential players each time he does that. It also seems like there is this ongoing push to hype everything up. I feel the game has been so brutally hyped that it has reached the point where it will never live up to expectations because the expectations are already outside of what can technically be achieved. The other day I saw a video where a guy said, "When this releases, I think all other MMOs will be forgotten." So I checked his comment section and saw so many people echoing that statement and that's something that makes me worry about how future reviews are going to affect the game.

  2. These are bold claims to make when even alpha 2 isnt released yet. Also the idea that a pvp centric mmo will be one of the biggest and most succesful mmo´s out there is also quite a big hill to climb on its own.
