At that point i gave up waiting, playing Throne and liberty and having a blast.
i said the same thing, good on you brother
I think people overestimate A1 and what that was. Sure it had a bunch of systems in a primitive form, but they were static and much easier to implement in that form. Relative to what they want for the finished game, those systems had almost none of the real work done, and there wouldn't be much difference in work to complete if they continued development from those systems or started from scratch. People and probably Steven as well, underestimate how much work there is in making systems dynamic and interconnected, and how the potential bugs and conditions the system has to handle as a result. Not to mention how much cross-team work and communication slow things down and is required because things are so interconnected and complicated in the intended design of AoC.
As someone that has worked as a network infrastructure and network security coder at the highest level of this industry for most of my career, I can assure you that this "dynamic server meshing" is going to destroy this game. Games like Star Citizen demand that kind of tech, and machines are so far from supporting it properly that they're going to struggle for a few more years while working on it. That tech is far from new and far from unconventional. I've worked for many companies building that exact same technology, but it's not foundational reasonable for real-time products like games where on-time package delivery is so crucial. During a livestream I heard them jokingly say that they heard someone saying it hadn't been done, so they wanted to prove they could do it. There is a reason it hasn't be done, and it's because in most cases it's not necessary and in others it wouldn't be technically possible.
I remember asking the CEO of SpatialOS why he would assume that an indie development team could afford or even required access to technology that only companies like Blizzard, NCSoft, Nexon, and such could afford and use. He told me that he believed everyone deserved access to premium technology and even flaunted how he had already scored tens of millions from multiple investors, and I told him that it would be a financial failure for all of them as I worked for 3 major studios that cancelled MMORPGs during production; most mid-way through because they realized that the infrastructure would be unaffordable to maintain.
Doing something just because it seems or feels reasonable is rarely reason enough for doing it. They're going to run into a data issues soon that is going to require so much extrapolation once a server hands off an entity or collection of entities, that they're going to have to use some kind of AI or procedural behavior to correct and then transport entity data between servers, leading to horribly misrepresented entity behavior in clients. Someone with proper networking experience should have said no to this because it's not necessary for any traditionally-scoped MMORPG, and because the sheer amount of work it's going to take to make it work convincingly will be worth the cost of another MMORPG, itself.
100% agree with everything you say here. We all want the project to come to fruition and do well. That said, its been in development for way to long. Its not really acceptable.
The engine change setback sounds so concerning. You're right, UE5 is not just like an upgrade from UE4 that they can make a few patches for, it is an entirely different engine so they are building again from the ground up. Thats absolutely brutal.
combat is the most important thing in MMO and the lack of talking about it is really concerning
I bet they don't have 200 staff. I really don't think they do. There's just no way 100 people are working on this game. And that's assuming 100 of these people aren't right. (Web / Payments / Legal etc)
5yers to go is totally unrealistic
Now this sounds a realistic tester…it's crazy i told someone it's very worrisome how we only have 40% of the riverlands with "content" and people are still talking about how they have to get grind spots. Like when are they gonna start filling up the world with content and im told that they need to test the riverlands first to see how that all works out and i don't think people realize how long content creation really takes. But im excited and will see where all of this goes but i have no clue how long it's gonna take them to fill up the world with playable content
Thanks for the honest feedback, I have lowered my expectations a bit. Especially with the server state. Probably should not expect a smooth logon experience during alpha2.
Game will be out in like 2030 😂
The time-line is not a surprise to me. Open development is not a science or a had a proven way of being presented.
That combine with the public's overall ignorance of actual game development and indie companies ignorance of how to market their games, we get what we're getting right now.
The game is in Alpha. It WILL have massive shortcomings, bugs and greybox. It's objectively not a failure of Intrepid or any other company. It is simply the part of game development the community does not have a full and meaningful understanding of.
We all have to measure our expectations and not expect impatience and unrealistic expectations to be equal to objective understanding of actual game development.
i hope combat will get a bit more mobility and a faster pace
Ads 90 seconds in? Greedy fuck
Most of the gamers became so toxic wow. My god be patient with everything. If you don't like to play, if you don't like a game don't talk about it. Useless toxic comments
So, Alpha is Alpha.
I dont understand it's a alpha.. its not beta.. what did u expect a completed project?
I was kind of expecting it, but still a bit disappointed.
They will probably have to find a minimum viable product and work towards that, maybe launch with just the left continent, or something.
ill be in adult diapers before this trash comes out
I was VERY surprised at how unflushed out everything was. Nothing was working, and as they fix things they still aren't great. How is it possible to be this bad after so long? The beginning area should be incredibly flushed out and engaging, but it is nothing. It should be a 3-5 hour starting area to lvl 8-10, and then quests that send you out to the neighboring nodes.
Really wondering how they can finanze the project for so long. I am not a big believer tbh. Even if they succesfully lauch many people wont like the game and the sub model that comes with it.
Actually sad how you need to defend yourself for 10 minutes after communicating some doubts about the project. The studio developed towards a really bad feedback culture where doubt is censored or simplified as hate.
