Recently RitchieSH released a video talking about the combat in Intrepid’s upcoming MMORPG Ashes of Creation. Is it tab target? Is it action combat? It’s supposed to be hybrid but every time the release a new livestream update, it skews more and more toward action.

First
Action or Tab. I will just be excited to get my hands on the game. As long as combat isn't terrible feeling, it will work for me.
Action or Tab? Where do you stand?
So its hybrid, like the game had always proclaimed to be. to suggest its plain action is incorrect. fixed camera reticle/Tab free cursor camera on toggle is the implementation method. with soft lock and cleave hit detection. Its not pure action combat. The new young blood argument is incorrect because you only have to look at the brief success of classic wow compared to New World.
I saw my name so I clicked
Personally, I've always been on the side of, why restrict players to one or the other when you can have both? I like the idea of hybrid the most. The more you give players to work with, the more unique the experience. There is of course a "too much is too much" but I don't think hybrid approaches that line. Ultimately, what I think it comes down to isn't a decision of one or the other, but the implementation of the decision altogether. We've seen boring tab combat, and we've seen horrible action combat. I've also seen good variations of both. It's always just been in the implementation. Which is, of course, the hardest part. Lol.
I'm not sure how you can consider ESO tab? Technically there is a "tab target" but that is just a soft lock. It's for when there are overlapping enemies. Otherwise, it serves no function. ESO is action with generous hitboxes. AOC's action mode looks almost exactly like ESO.
I'm very excited to see the combat become further fleshed out, and to see the sneak peeks at more classes down the line. We get mage this month, and if I remember correctly rogue after that. I just hope they continue to really work on the combat, the direction is good, I personally really enjoy action combat. From what I've seen and heard from the livestreams the game is going to play similar to Guild Wars 2 if you have the action combat camera toggled. From what I have played in that game the reticle only acts as an automatic targeter and aimer for your skills and directional skills. your arrows will still auto fly to the monsters but there's still skill based aiming with ground reticles. So think Guild Wars 2 with that camera option but…better. But this will be evolved on, and improved from what I've heard. That's the best comparison I can make of it if people are wanting to go look at something to see what it will 'feel' like. And the action combat camera toggle makes guild wars feel very good, as somebody who hates tab targeting and sluggish combat I enjoy Guild Wars 2 a ton because of that camera option. Before I hated the game and couldn't stand playing it.
I just hope, again, that they keep improving upon the combat. People need to remember that these first reveals are without a doubt not the finished product, the animations will be improved, particles, etc. The combat is going along nicely but does it still have a long way to go? YES SIR! IT ABSOLUTELY needs more polish and fine tuning, but in the end I really do think it will be amazing and a lot of people can enjoy it.
I've said it before and ill say it again. Just pick one or the other. I feel like a true hybrid system wont give us best of both worlds and feel somewhat mediocre. But I'm no game dev, hopefully they pull off Stevens dream. I also dig the transition wooshes! Feel familiar somehow 🤣🤣
I want both! I don't care if they are mutually exclusive!
it kinda looks like action, the melee seems more action but from the looks of it you still have to tap on enemies and your skills and attacks just go to the enemies with the projectiles being able to be blocked by terrain and players like we saw in the ranger reveal so its still tap but looks and feels like action with some action elements and vice verse…i dunno hybrid i guess lmao …which honestly could actualy be very fun.
The system has been hybrid the whole time and it remains hybrid now. There are aspects of both kinds of combat, and now it leans more heavily towards action. But there are things that still represent a tab type scheme.
Part of the reason to not go full action in a game with potentially hundreds of people on screen at once has a lot to do with the back end. Even today, with today's servers and tech, there are limitations to what you can track and how fast and accurately you can track it and how quickly you can then relay that to the player via visual, audio, and ui feedback.
True action would physicallize all components of combat and every arrow would have to track in real time across the battlefield and hit a physicalized component. Depending on the level of detail and accuracy they are aiming for in their system this can get complicated and very heavy on the system very quickly. Which doesn't make for a good action environment.
Now if some components are used like they were in tab, you'd have an actor that you call out, in this case an npc or player and that actor has a set status and placement and even if they aren't actually where "YOU" see that they are the system will know the actor status and track your arrow to the known actor. So to you,, you appear to have hit them and the system says you did, even if technically where you aimed in real-time the other player had moved.
FPS games and many others deal with this issues in many ways, and many of them involve "fudging" reality to within acceptable margins to determine if a shot landed.
At this point most mmos are hybrid combat. GW2 and ESO are great examples of hybrid. Especially GW2 its definitely a hybrid combat and what we are seeing now from ashes is very reminiscent of GW2 style combat but with classic class trinity. Even WoW has action style targeting skills. It leans heavier on tab target, but there are plenty of skill shots and ground peaceable abilities that lean into the action side of things. Some things can even be done on the move where you are locked in place.
I don't think there is much left that is true tab target anymore. Locked in place only able to single target attack, no cleave… anyway. Just my 2 cents. More like 200 cents because I wrote a 200 word essay.
Do more videos ya bum.
Tab vs Action….(as it pertains to ranged) Tab is, I hard target an enemy and the ability tracks to the target and hits(after any mitigation and def ofc) Action is I have to "aim" my ability and if my ability has travel time then i have to account for where the target will be if they are moving to be able to hit. Melee there is less of a difference cause even with tab melee u typically need to have ur front 180 degree facing the enemy….action might lessen that range to front 90 degree or even 45.
Ashes is Tab+ with Action Camera option, basically an improved FFXIV/Guild Wars 2.
I enjoy both action and tab, so, as long as they do whatever they do well, it's a win-win for me.
I like the thought of having certain things being tab target like spells and buffs and debuffs. keep attacks action but make spells tab
Latency
I think Steven is taking an incredibly diplomatic approach. He's making an action combat system and calling it hybrid to keep the tab target players but he knows that action combat, whether we all like it or not, is the future of MMORPGs.
