In video game economics, a sink system is a crucial balancing mechanism that helps maintain the game’s economic stability by removing resources from the game world. This process, known as “sinking,” is designed to counteract the influx of resources generated by players and prevent inflation. Sinks can take various forms, such as item decay, where items wear out and need to be replaced; taxes or fees imposed on in-game transactions; and consumable items that are used up during gameplay. Other common sinks include upgrading equipment, crafting materials, and repair costs. By effectively implementing sinks, game developers ensure that the virtual economy remains balanced, encouraging players to continue engaging with the game and its mechanics without overwhelming the system with excess resources.

  1. There’s probably a better way to create a sink using mounts rather than killing them. People can get attached to their mounts and taking it away seems like too harsh of a penalty for it dying, and opens up the possibility of griefing hard to obtain mounts. something like having to heal a killed mount with either gold or resources would create this kind of sink while letting people keep their favored mounts

  3. I’d much rather have animal husbandry pivot to some other lucrative means rather than making mounts that economy dependent. QoL things like mounts that also have sentimentality to them are a good thing to leave out of the economic space of the game imo. Guild wars had the best take on mounts I’ve seen so far
