Mistakes New Players Make In FFXIV…

I’ve made a lot of mistakes in Final Fantasy XIV as a total beginner, so I’ve put together this little guide so you can avoid them.

Final Fantasy XIV is a very well constructed MMORPG, with a beginning levelling experience that surpasses any other MMO on the market. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have any complaints however…

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

More about Final Fantasy XIV:

“Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG and features a persistent world in which players can interact with each other and the environment. Players create and customize their characters for use in the game, including name, race, gender, facial features, and starting class. Unlike in the original release, players may only choose to be a Disciple of War or Magic as a starting class—Disciples of the Hand and Land are initially unavailable. Players must also select a game server for characters to exist on. While servers are not explicitly delineated by language, data centers have been placed in the supported regions (i.e., North America, Europe, Japan) to improve the communication latency between the server and the client computer and players are recommended to choose a server in their region. Regardless of server or language, the game features a large library of automatically translated game terms and general phrases which allow players who speak different languages to communicate.”

  1. Waking sands teleport tickets aside, why didn't you just take a chocobo porter? There is a better option than the chocobo porter, but based on the fact that you walked there I assume you passed by the chocobo porter every time you "pray returned " there.

  2. Just a heads up, if you are in combat falling damage will kill you.
If you are not in combat be aware of monsters where you land, they might just look at you and bite you for that last 1hp.
Also movement options like Dragon's Elusive Jump and Dancer's En Avant glue your character to the ground even if the animation shows the character airborne so if you do an Elusive Jump of a cliff it will teleport to the ground and you take 0 damage.

  3. This "guide" could be summed up by saying "Just read and don't assume this game is as brain dead as WoW." These were tips… the game tells you about the crystals the second you spawn in the world its your first quest.

  4. You can set some home aether teleports. If I remember correctly the home 1 is free thanks to the return ability and 3 can be set to favorite so that they cost half the gill. Return can also be used in a dungeon to go back to the entrance quickly. Handy in Haukke Manor.

  5. Few more tips.

    – If the enemy castbar blinks red and white while building it's a spell that can be interupted by Tanks Silence Ability or Ranged DPS equivilents which will start to matter later on with some enemies casting charms to force you into more dangerous attacks

    – Most ARR Bosses can be stunned as a Defensive Cooldown and run on a 2 min DR timer before you can do a full 6 second stun on them as tank again

    – You can skip right to the map by clicking on the objective text of the Quest list instead of clicking on it's Quest name and going through the Quest menu

    – Fates are a good compliment to leveling up DPS while waiting for Dungeon Ques, go to an area a couple levels higher then yourself and mobs in fates for Kill Mob fates are up to 4 levels lower than the area

    – Fates have different types based on there icon on the map. i.e. Scary face = Boss Fate, Axe/Sword/Staff = Mob kill, Bag = Collect Items from ground / kills

    – Do your Challenge Log weekly, it's free EXP, Companion EXP, Craft/Gather EXP, and can help finish off levels easily. When you get to the end of Heavensward and Get to Illdyshire, unlock Wonderous Tails Journal as well which is a Weekly pick up which gives 50% of a Level no matter what level you are as well.

    – Don't be afraid to spend gil on the Aetheryte Teleporting, you make Gil like no tomorrow to cover the minute cost just from doing dungeons. Every mob killed in one gives each party member gil without announcing it, so you'll accumulate lots of it without knowing it and will feel stupid for walking around a whole lot.

    – Aetheryte Teleporting costs max at 999 gil and that's for the furtherest teleportation, the minimum is 100 gil. Price is determined by distance to closest one.

    – Using Return in a dungeon takes you back to the entrance and is helpful when some older Dungeons like Hakkue Manor wants you to back track to the start to get to the final boss

    – Say that you're new to either a Role or the Instance as a whole. This puts people into Training mode if they have done it before and are more willing to help you out with mechanics or help with taking lessor pulls if new to healer, or encouraging bigger pulls as tank, etc… The FF14 Community loves to help you to improve and grow as a player.

    – It's okay to die, otherwise you won't learn a thing, just make sure that you figure out what went wrong while sitting tanking the floor. When you get rez'd you'll gain a buff that makes you immune to all damage for a short time unless you cast or attack something, so if you just came back up, give a CD or two for you're healer to make sure you're good to go again.

  6. For leveling alts, do the hunter log like Krojak suggested but also do fates in the area as well. Don't bother with regular side quests.

Also, for the fall damage thing. Be sure to not be in combat when you do the jump. If you are in combat, falling from big heights can kill you.

  7. The exp buff doesnt just give you 100% more exp but it doubles your exp. so without anything you get 200%. the 3% exp buff from food becomes 6%. the 30% from the ring becomes 60% so if you combine all those you get 266% exp with those and the exp buff.
i have only leveled with that boost so i dont know how it is to level without it but for the first character it can be quite frustrating. i like not to farm level to actually continue but i am so much higher level compared to the msq that i have to always be downscaled and you have to wait for forever to get more spells. i am almost lvl 60 and i am still missing all the 50-60 abilities because you can only learn them when you are in haevensward apparently which is quite anoying because (atleast for me as a dragoon) they seem to be the coolest abilities that actually do stuff and make my rotation interesting. buuuut i need to do quest sfor like 20more hours before i can get those abilities :(.
that said after your first job it will be amazing to level the other ones up quickly to try stuff out

  8. Hey Krojak great tips! The game has loads of features that can be overlooked veeeeeryyyy easily.

A little add on the the city aethernet here. If you attune to every single aethernet shard in the city, it will unlock teleporation to all the city's exits. its not ground breaking but it has it uses.

  9. Another tip with the cast bar:

You can break that UI element out away from the bosses health bar, place it where ever you like, and make it HUGE! I found that setting multiple years into playing and it massively improved my awareness in battles.

  10. One more tip for battle awareness as you get into content with 8+ people:

The battle effects from everyone casting can get ridiculous and block the visibility of a lot of "tells" for boss mechanics. You can tone that down by using the setting to only display your spell effects.

  11. Another thing that helped me with the cast bar is that you can detach it from the boss name/HP bar and set it elsewhere in your HUD. There's a checkbox for that element in the HUD settings that splits them and then you can move the cast bar to somewhere more visible, or even enlarge it independently as well. It really helps for tank interrupts/CD pops but also for other classes to know when to gtfo.

  12. With the enemy's cast bar: you can separate it from the enemy's frame, resize it, and move it to an area that grabs your attention so that you can prep for the incoming mechanic. This is especially useful for tanks and healers in order to mitigate or counter the mechanic

  13. An addendum to the MSQ shortcut: right underneath the MSQ button in the top left, a smaller button will appear sometimes. This is the location of your next available job quest for your current job. This applies to both combat and non combat jobs and will easily point you to the new location of quests once you upgrade the job or reach later expansions and quests are no longer taken from the starting city guilds.

  14. Asterisks on the fall damage. If your in combat and fall, you will die.
Also, when you die, you can still /s and /sh. If you ask for a res with <pos> it will post your exact cords in the chat and 95% of the time, someone will come saving you the trip back.

    /sh is area wide.

  15. If you are not on a preferred server, it's free to transfer to one.

Also the auto sort is amazing.

Also also, there is a button on your character screen that can just equip automatically your best in slot gear.

  16. This is a very very good video. It may seem obvious but its not, this shit is really helpful to a brand new player. The "Blue quests" also have a Plus icon to say you're gonna gain something too

  17. Don't make my mistake. I was level 70 well within the Stormblood endgame when I finally was told that you can access the aethernet from the aethernet plaza. I seriously thought you could only access it through those tiny little crystals and would just run to the nearest one from the plaza to access the aethernet. Don't be me.

  18. not a mistake but a tip, you can set the cities and towns central aether crystal as favored destination. This will drastically cut down gil fee when you port back to cities and even make it almost literally free when you join an fc with port buff active. Those gill spent teleporting although small will accumulate.
