ESports are for older games trying to stay relevant. Ashes is a new, niche game that doesn't need the exposure.
I’m sorry but if you’re advocating for an LoL or Overwatch style Esports scene with sponsors and a million dollar cash prize type of event, then it’s not gonna work in AoC at all and for the current time Esports in general is not doing so well financially but if it’s just a grassroots type of event where the players are mostly involved in organizing and hosting it then I can see that happen but I don’t want Intrepid to spend resources on something that unimportant for now.
I am interested to see what kind of tools could be around for ashes to help promote the player driven PVP. Arenas would be fun but think the only real way it would work is 8v8 to mimic the class choices and composition that will be needed.
As someone who been deeply involved in esports my entire life i would recommend you dont worry about this, the esports landscape continues to struggle
Frankly, I HATE the idea of esports for ashes. In a completely player driven world, I would only ever want emergent competition that has nothing to do with real world money beyond an individuals decision to remain subscribed.
Any informal pvp events that involve real money should be based in a shared pool among the players involved if they so wish. Keep sponsorships out of ashes. Keep the (real world) profit motive out of players’ minds in ashes.
If, down the line— and I mean WAAAAAYYY down the line, once world discovery/immersion isn’t as wondrous/novel of a thing— intrepid wish to have instanced pvp competitions then do be it. Watch if you wish, otherwise I simply think it would be too influential of a layer of the game and would impact virtually every player in a negative way.
Particularly not a fan of Esports in Ashes of Creation. I think they have enough on their plate with the current proposed systems they are bringing to the MMO to have to try to worry about an Esports angle and besides Esports is a failing venture in so many other games let alone the MMO genre. I believe Ashes of Creation should steer clear of this and stay true to their original plan and focus for the game.
