This video was spot on and highlighted why I quit getting excited for games/in games anymore. Leveling is pointless ("the game doesn't start till the end" bs), items are guaranteed and railroaded (they've lost their rarity and excitement). I think its a side effect of gaming becoming mainstream and for the casual player. Not that i think there is anything wrong with that, I'm glad that more people can enjoy and experience games. I just wish quality and difficulty wasn't sacrificed so that everyone could get their participation trophy. I've been playing a lot of Diablo 2 Resurrected lately and it reminded me how much gearing has changed. I (after 20 years) still know every name of every great item and even now get sooo excited if I get a drop with a good roll. Items feel like rewards, not handouts.
EQ was my first MMORPG and I still, to this day, have some of the best memories of my gaming life with that game. One day my friends and I went across the entire world (Faydwer to Qeynos) and it took HOURS (no fast travel – no teleports). There were multiple deaths and adventures and it is still the best time I ever had in an online game. I tried to go back to EQ a few years ago but too much time had passed and, as they say – no man ever steps into the same river twice. But I'll always have VERY fond memories of that game and that time. Thanks, man!
online gaming is all about community. if you do not have several friends you know irl or have been gaming with for years these games will feel empty or dead. I'm 38 I've played games for over 30 years and MMOs for over 20. Having ran guilds and been an officer in guilds it is all about the group. You get hyped for what you want and what others are into since they are your friends. I always loved going in getting everyone their tier sets and showing up to hang out online and win as a group. I don't really have any gamer friends anymore but that is not the games fault.
