Iām worried about Ashes of Creation, the new MMO coming from Intrepid Realms, but probably not for the reasons you think. Iām worried about some potential baked in pitfalls that could impact the game when it launches. Gambles being made on things from Graphics to PvP focus that may limit its ability to meet the heights itās reaching for. Are there enough MMO players interested in a game so focused on PvP to warrant the hype Ashes is getting?
This new MMORPG is for a lot of people the greatest hope we have for a next generation MMO even surpassing other in-development MMOs like Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, Camelot Unchained, Throne and Liberty and the unnamed Riot MMO.
So, what do you think? Is Ashes of Creation in trouble? Could Ashes of Creation fail to meet expectations, and is that the fault of the game design or just the hunger for a new massive MMO to satiate the market?

Hats off to you brother. I got away from video games all together (except Skyrim) because of so many bad start ups and the pay to win/micro transaction junk. Miss the old days lol

Great work again, homie
Definitely want more mmos to be successful. Ashes succeeding will only help the genre stay relevant and keep the space open for our personal saviors (pantheon the one true king)
PvP forced game you cannot opt out of…
Pass.
I remember when EQ2 launched, my potato wasn't able to handle it, at all. All I could see were meshes when I tried to play. Everyone I knew on EQ1 quit to play it. I was left out. So ended up playing WoW. I get the feeling ashes would do the same to what rig I am using now.
I get the feeling I will end up trying to play it, as all my friends seem hyped about it. š
Time will tell.
I will wait and see.
Fingers crossed.
I think AOC is DOA for exactly the reasons John said. I do not want to play an always on PVP game. I don't want to get my camp ganked from some chinese farmer. I know people get a debuff for attacking innocents. but they will simply make more than one character. one to Grief, one to play. wait and see. This game will be beautiful trash, like New World. but worse because of griefing.
I have never had the magic since playing in EQ in 2001
Iāve been cautiously optimistic about AoC for years now, but you make some really good points about the open world PvP. I think Iām tilting more cautious than optimistic now.
Very happy you didn't get sucked up into a tornado!
I'm indifferent to AoC. Any game without opt-in PvP is a big NO for me. And it's frankly not just the opt-in mechanic–it's also if PvP becomes an integral part of progression so that if you opt-out, you're gimped to a large degree.
I will continue to say that I want more successful MMO's in the genre because the space needs more competition and new ideas to push it forward. My biggest hesitation with Ashes is the PvP. It's just not my thing. A little here and there is alright but I have to be in the mood for it which isn't often. What I fear will happen with it, is it going the way of New World. Starts off PvP heavy and then keeps getting watered down till you have what you see today. If that starts to happen then its going to make a lot of folks Big Mad. Hopefully that won't happen and all the PvPers get what they've been craving for years. But that leads into my other major concern: will I actually have fun or even enjoy it if it going to be so PvP centric. Maybe I'll like the crafting and lean more into that but I like to dabble in all aspects of MMOs except hardcore raiding. if I can't run around to hunt and gather without worrying about some asshat who just gets kicks out of ganking people, that will ruin any enjoyment I get from the other pieces of the game.
I think Intrepid has a very thin line to balance a lot of game mechanics on and only time will tell if they are able to pull it off or not.
Appreciate your balanced commentary! Looking forward to your concerns with Pantheon to see if they match my own.
For me, Ashes is the first and last passion project of this size where design outweighs profits. And ehen you call Ashes crowdfunded is not totally accurate. Stephen is funding the game himself, the crowdfunding was only used to gauge the interest before moving forward with the project.
I'm not interested in Lineage 2 style pvp. It's just not my jam. That being said, I am concerned whether the market for that is large enough to sustain a game of this size and scope. Time will tell.
I wish the people that enjoy PVP weren't, in general, such sweaty jerk-wads. Honorable PVP could be enjoyable. Equally matched opponents, in consensual battle, could be fun. But we know that's not what happens. So for me, AoC is a pass. I'll give it a try and maybe I'll like it. I'll try to like it. But I will probably quit after getting griefed too much.
It is a definite pass for me. I don't enjoy being killed by some no life player who lives in his mother's basement, whose only reason for playing the game is to grief others.
There any EQ2 emulators out there? never tried it before. sick of P1999 velious. so sick of it
My biggest concern with Ashes of Creation is the player driven content. If there is not enough people willing to work together it will fail, not at first because there will be huge populations on release but after a while it will start to die like New World. Also if there is not enough for single players/small groups and guilds to do it will die. The reason that FF14 is so popular in my opinion is that there is a single player story and small group content. MMO's are about communication but there has to be something for isolation.
I honestly think that Ashes is destined to fail. I absolutely LOVE their ideas and concepts, they are beyond thrilling to think about. However, biting off more than you can chew, is a game killer too. I doubt they are able to pull all these amazing feats off in a way that make it live up to the hype. Don't get me wrong, i WANT this game to work exactly as advertised – This would be the new great MMO. But can it work as they advertise it? That is the grand question here and sadly, i will remain fairly skeptical. The other caveats is that a very VERY large chunk of MMO players do not enjoy PvP as much as one might need to, to get as much out of Ashes as they want. And ofcourse, the higher your graphics the fewer people can play it.
Overall, less is more. Can you give me all the functions and systems and make them run smooth and flawless, bring it on, i will be there forever. If you can't, you need to scale things back or even remove things to give people are smooth experience. As much as people hate and rip on a game like WoW – Todd Howard would be proud, because it just works and it works so so well. The gaming experience is flawless – Even if you do not enjoy the content of the game or its progress, it still works and it works better than all other MMO's on the market.
I still have hopes that Ashes will release flawlessly and be everything we want it to be – But, so far, very few games have achieved that feat, thus i have my doubt that this will be the case.
Anyway, my two coppers. Great video mate, as per usual š
Been keeping an eye on it, though my hopes are not high. My biggest concern is the potential of unchecked involuntary PvP.
You bring some very valid points. I felt the exact same way about the game when they brought out their pvp game.
I agree with you on every point, but I am personally WAY more concerned about Pantheon that AoC.
Eq2 looked terrible…and I'm a huge EQ fan. I think WoW took over as 'the' mmo from EQ because Omens of War was such a huge step down from Planes of Power and WoW was hitting the market running. EQ2 wasn't that big of a factor.
Intrepid Realms? Pantheon crew hitting back. Love it.
I think EQ players are jaded when it comes to mmo releases, due to our past history, including pantheon: has died and fallen.
I think its still sketchy but probably the best chances out of all the recent ones.
