Is Ashes of Creation Any Good? (Alpha Impressions & Thoughts)

Read more about Ashes of Creation ➜ https://ashesofcreation.mgn.tv

Last weekend we got our first hands on look at Ashes of Creation with the Alpha One event. So how was it? What’s the game look like currently? And should you buy-in to play the Alpha right now? Let’s get into it.

While Ashes remains one of my most anticipated upcoming MMOs, there’s a few things you should know about the current version of the game before you spend the money to try it. There’s a lot of potential with AoC, but it’s clear there is still a way to go. I’ll be keeping a close on on this one for sure.

Now for the algorithm…

Ashes of Creation is an MMORPG where everything is permanently impacted
by your actions – explore, trade, build, and let the world take form. From your imagination through your will and into everyone’s reality, what you create will be the cornerstone of the next explorer’s ambition.

Key Features

Risk Vs Reward
All across Verra, you have the opportunity to experience massive warfare, participate in epic trade caravans, and gather valuable components to craft exquisite items. Not only will your fellow players be your adversaries; the creatures of the land and the very environment itself will pose a constant and fresh challenge. Will you siege castles to become royalty, defeat other guilds to showcase your prowess, shape the marketplace by being a successful trader, or earn renown by developing your artisan crafting skills? This is your story, you tell us!

An Open World
Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMORPG experience. Our world structure is dynamic, and built to react to your actions. Cities will rise and fall as you shape the world of Verra. Quests and secrets will unlock as populations gather and their needs grow. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real-time, you will have the ability to destroy what’s been created, paving the way for new developments, populations, and change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your experience. Gone are the days of static worlds; change is here to stay!

  1. It's become very apparent that people don't read.. They just see $500 for Alpha access and go off the rails… In the beginning they had a Kickstarter and offered access to those backers for $500 (I'm sure they had other levels too) To keep things fair to those early backers they have not changed the price. How would you feel if another player paid $200 to get Alpha access when you paid $500 as an early backer? Do your research people!!

  2. I am excited for Ashed of Creation….. but with the scope they set out to have according to their trailers and such, I have this feeling it's doomed to become the mmorpg version of Cyberpunk2077. a great game and concept, but overhyped by players at the detriment of the game, with development issues because of how big their scope is

  3. I hope they change the casting animations. Waiving your hand around like a panicked Harry Potter looks silly. They should make a casting animation that covers all spell type of the same element. Then have the actual spell cast look different from eachother

  4. The first "alpha" was a bone thrown to the uber nerds that will put down money for any taste of content. And for future bragging rights when they show off their exclusive items. That is really all it was.(for the consumer) The devs are very smart to give people an opportunity to experience the game as it develops…even at this stage. It is in a really good state, for how early in development it is.

  7. My biggest headache regarding AoC is the blatant hypocrisy in not only the community, but also by the dev team, but also that somehow facts, logic and criticsm doesn't apply equally to AoC in comparison to other games. AoC hasn't been released. It isn't even in a real playable state and yet I already despise its most vocal community, which is a huge departure from literally any other game. There is NOTHING here bar a concept, yet apparently it's the best game ever?

  8. I like your MMO news, but you botched this one. Pretty much ignoring everything that devs told about the Alpha, and focusing on everything that is not an objective of this test.

  11. I actually got one of the dragons to drop dragon scales that Steven said can be used for top-tier gear crafting. So it does seem they intend to have special drops from mobs.

  12. My concern with this game is that yes, it needs another 2-3 years. But I don't think the dev team think that. I feel like they're pushing for a release mid to late next year.

  13. I am optimistic and, as many have pointed out, we should cherish the fact that their development gets shown every month. But let's be realistic here: it won't take 2-3 more years to make.
Good intentions aren't enough to make a top notch mmorpg, and even though they are by far the best 'indie-turned close to a AA professional studio' with such a game in the works, Intrepid are still young as a company and that in itself carries extra challanges, on top of that, they are making an mmorpg which is the most expensive and complex kind of videogame you can make, and on top of that, it's no ordinary mmo, it's very ambitious and huge in scope AND ON TOP OF THAT fucking COVID which makes everything I've written even fucking harder.
All we can do is to stay optimistic and cheer for them all the way, they DESERVE it. But let's be honest with ourselves aswell, they won't be done in 3 years, not at this pace, but it won't be a meme like Star Citizen either.
So, take a Team Cherry pill and JUST LET THEM WORK 😀

  14. Guys, Ashes of Creation is not aiming to release next year. Calm down and take a deep breath. The devs are planning for plenty of time to continue to develop the game. Absolutely be skeptical and cautious and don't just jump on a hype train but also try to be aware that this isn't just a release that is right around the corner. If in another 6 months there isn't anything more to show content wise then I think the concern would be warranted.

  15. I like the magic effects, not a fan of the High Magic settings mmos have settled into cause when you have 20+ ppl on one target the screen is taken over by colorful explosions, but these ones have a "Harry Potter" sparking vibe to them which looks great.

  16. $500 to play an alpha is honestly inexcusable. Idc how you try and justify it, it’s greedy. It makes me truly sad to see the western MMO community genuinely hyped about this garbage. I remember playing Lost Arks alpha back in 2017 before the KR release and it was infinitely more polished and felt like an actual game? AoC looks like another star citizen situation and only people with buyers remorse will argue with me. If you don’t think I’m right, just wait until this releases and I’ll come back and rub it in. I have been part of the gaming industry longer than the majority of people these days and I’ve seen this happen tons of times. Players are so quick to say “it’s just alpha it’ll get better” and then years later those same players are left with empty wallets and broken dreams. Watch this one carefully and for the love of god, don’t be one of those morons who paid actual hard earned money for this

  17. The time it took this game from announcement to alpha is longer than when they announce BDO and released a full game.

It almost more economical to hire koreans to do the leg work while the core team develop ideas and direct the other development crew overseas

  18. the $500 is not just for you test it, it's pack the contains a lot of value in terms of game time, cash shop currency, and cosmetics.. the way he made it sound, it's like you're paying just to test..

  19. I think the high cost for alpha access is working as a deterrent for people who think they'll be playing a game in the alpha instead of testing what the developers want. The alpha 1 pack on their kickstarter was also 500$ but it contained lifetime subscription.

  20. You're being disingenuous and doing this game a disservice. It's not 500 dollars just to get into the alpha. For that price you get the game when it launches, 6 months if sub time, pets, cosmetics, and store cash. If you add all that up it comes to $475, so you're paying $25 for alpha and beta access. All the things you nitpicked are clearly still being worked on.

  21. I really hope they get the action combat down. I would much prefer it over another standard tab targeting mmo. It makes combat way more engaging and I think If they actually put some focus into it could be really good in this game

  22. character movement looks slippery and like every "action" combat MMO I've seen, it looks sloppy. I'll check this game out when it's close to launch, but for now I'm not feeling it

  23. Thanks for the overview but I disagree with your opinion on the scale of the game. To me it just looks like you’ve been shrunk. If you replaced your character with a mouse it would fit right in.

  24. maybe the loot is meant to get u crafting material, to craft cool stuff, also it makes more sense, that from a wild boar some leather or meat as a drop, rather then leather armor +5 instead. It makes more sense that way. I know that well its a game, so why not dropping an item a cool one if boss, here or there etc. but i find it more rewarding to get the materials needed and build my own cool armor or weapon, then just drop it randomly. But not in action rpgs or H&S RPGS, like diablo there the loot is more important for me then crafting, in MMOs like this, i like crafting better. So for me if this stays this way and u can find recipes intead in some chests or u obtain certain ones as u progress. Lvl up etc. Could be more fun. Like in the beginning if the players will do the same quests and get equip. as a reward, will look very similar with same equip, but as u lvl up further and find recipes, and more recipes, unique ones whatever, there is when the differences might start to flourish, i mean, if u have the material to make certain equip item.
Anyway, it might change, it was Alpha after all, so it might get better loot, but also BS loot and filling up ur inventory space with garbage is also a bad idea, so balance act is necessary and thats always tricky. U cant make everyone happy with that and all i know is, that i like the idea to get special materials for special equip to craft, rather then finding it on some poor animal. It just doesnt make sense, but from game standpoint it does, so all in all it will depend only on the devs. what they decide is the way. Maybe somwhere in the middle :).
