I Tested Ashes of Creation – The Most Hyped Upcoming MMORPG

This is my extremely early first impressions of what Ashes of Creation is so far. Actually pleasantly surprised by what they have so far, I think the future is bright with one caveat, that the combat system gets dealt with REALLY REALLY SOON. We are still looking at probably 2 years minimum before the game is ready for a real launch, but it’s hard to tell without having a clear roadmap from the developers which hopefully they will provide at some stage. The actual core elements of the game are solid, the game world, the graphics, the networking, the optimization…Content is the easy part, the hard part seems to be coming along great.

  1. I'm definitely in agreement on the movement it needs to be more fluid its a bit janky however I think their main goal currently is performance which is a big issue we don't want another game that runs like WoW.

  2. My qualm is it already looks dated in graphics and artstyle. It is about on par with GW2 which is a decade old but without the painter style stylism. That and while it is open world, the world looks about the size of Skyrim. That is gonna get pretty f'in cluttered if the game population booms.

  3. MMOs go wrong these days as controller support is shocking I can't sit and play MMOs on mouse keyboard more than 1 hour hands get irritated

  4. i think the main reason why the character doesn't look like it "fits" in the environment would be that the shadows don't work for the character models. hence why it doesn't seem, grounded. i was watching the horse shadows and that the shadow isn't even connected to the horse creates a distance and floatiness of the characters. another reason why the character doesn't fit in would be that there is no ambient lighting/occlusion, so even when your character is standing next to an extreme light or and warm light/cool light/lamp post the character doesn't seem like its supposed to be there.

  5. It's honestly kind of off-putting that they charge $500 for access to a game in an unfinished Alpha state. What do these people that already paid $500 get over someone that plays after official launch and only paid 50 or 60 bucks? Seems like yet another game developer using "beta" or "alpha" as a marketing gimmick. True Alpha testing should be done by paid employees of the company. They could do a closed beta by invite-only if they really cared about something other than just selling their game.

  6. That's the thing I look for most in an MMO, is the responsiveness of your character, and how it feels to play and control in the world. I agree with you about the character and the combat being lacking. I also don't like the walk/run animations of the characters. They aren't really convincing in portraying a adept, powerful character.

  8. Hope they don't opt into tab-targeting. Not only does this game have a HUGE amount of attention from players flocking to it from BDO/Tera (action based.) but if it also plans to release in 2023, i just feel like tab targeting will be aging quite badly. Maybe i'm wrong, maybe its still personal preference, but i just think 3-4 years from now, tab targeting won't be the norm for PvP games.

  9. I also think the character feels out of place. I think that it has to do with the running animation, as if the character is slightly elevated above the ground and not actually "stepping" on it. Somehow the character looks like is has its own gravity and movement, but yes it is hard to put a finger on what is it ._.

Great video brother. Can't wait for the next one!

  10. I really like what they did with this game so far, i watched asmongold's stream and i was really impressed. I expected a bit more to honest but then i understood that it's not a beta, not even alpha yet

  11. Lots of great points but you may want to watch the interview by asmongold from last week and Steven explains their aims for this weekend and where they are in development

  12. I think it is a scaling issue with the character. The character models look good when on the character select screen, but when you zone into the world it just looks off.
Could also be a lighting thing too. I did notice in the latest livestream where they were showing off the ruins, the characters did seem to fit into the world better, likely due to the better lighting.

  13. combat is not too bad. there are a few things they can do that will really help. Going exclusively tab target would be a very bad idea. They HAVE to nail the hybrid combat. Narc had some good suggestions that I thought of too, using BDO directional combat system to play different animation from that direction your character is moving (while animation locked)
