Ashes Of Creation recently had it’s first non NDA Alpha 1 weekend test and I had the chance to record some footage of my playing the game, I actually intended to do a normal first impressions style video but a lot of my footage got corrupt so I had to settle for voice over.

In this Alpha 1 test we got to take a look at the early combat for the game, node leveling up to town stage, questing, world bosses, castle sieges, progression, character creation and world exploration, bare in mind the game is still a solid 18 months – 2 years from a full release so don’t take this as a final product

What do you think about Ashes Of Creation so far based on what you’ve seen from various Alpha 1 live streams or my own video? let me know in the comments below!

  1. ashes of creation is going to be ruined by minmaxers unfortunately. players are going to figure out what race gives the best node benefits and 90% of the playerbase will be that race and every node will look exactly the same. man I wish they were marketing this game to other gamers and not just MMO players, MMO players RUIN every game they touch

  3. I think it's worth mentioning again that this is not a content test. Therefore stuff like the combat you'll see isn't in the game yet. Also, the essence loot is just a placeholder because the explicit loot tables per monster aren't being tested yet.

  4. Blizzard has gotten into the habit of "take versus give" lately in WoW and look how well that's doing for them. Ashes of Creation seems to be going down that route with the resource gathering / death mechanic. I think losing half of your gathered resources when you die is extremely punishing and a game mechanic that will make players grind more. More Grinding = More Time = More Sub Money. That's a shitty mechanic and should be pulled immediately. I think the corpse running in WoW was a genius punishing mechanic in itself. It does cost a little time to run back to your corpse and is annoying (the punishment for dying), but you don't lose hours of grinding. I literally avoided dying as much as possible in the open world in WoW just to avoid the annoyance of running back to your corpse. Losing half of my gathered loot? Yeah, hell no. I would've quit immediately.

  5. As an alpha 1 tester it obviously has the normal alpha type issues but doing all the stuff in the world is so immersive and fun compared to everything being instanced, you really feel part of the world

  6. Let me say first of all thank you for this video. I did not play the alpha and my information about this game comes mostly from you and a couple other youtube videos (and AoC wiki). It's very interesting but I do have a few concerns about this game based on my limited knowledge if I may…

    1. Dishonor system, as far as I know, doesn't work in mmo games. No matter how you penalize the player for killing someone lower level than them, you will always find some who won't care. If you have a few allied mega-guilds working with each other on a server, their members can effectively become 'honorless' or even high-value bounty targets and still remain untouchable.
    2. Players determining how the game will progress is an amazing concept, however giving players 100% control on said progress is worrying to me. I've had experience with players deciding the fate of a server on another sandbox survival game called Ark Survival Evolved. If you go to almost any official pvp server on Ark right now, one or two mega-tribes control the server and anyone new entering the server (when spotted) is captured and held prisoner till they log off. This could easily happen in this game as well. One guild could own several nodes in a large area and anyone else who wants to quest there could be demanded either gold or resources as tribute… and driven away upon refusal.
    3. Continuing on the same point, I don't see how mayoral elections (or any other position) can be fair when a node is controlled entirely by one guild. I don't know how the guild leader/officers can face any competition when almost everyone voting there is from the same guild.
    4. Not having plans to host dedicated pve and pvp servers is another concern of mine. Take me for example. I love pvp, but only when I have a choice to participate. Nothing irks me more to the point of stopping from playing the game than being disturbed or harassed while questing/grinding pve. (Of course if I'm the only person who feels this way or in the minority, then please disregard this point).
    5. Speaking of pvp, the class/augment selection system is also mildly concerning. The main thing I am worried about is how many different augments there are. For example, a mage main with ranger augment is a different 'class' than a ranger main with mage augment. While this provides greater variety in terms of gameplay, it also makes it that much harder and complicated to balance when it comes to pvp (and pve as well, I hate FOTM).

Thank you. I really hope this succeeds and becomes a fantastic game to play for everyone.

  7. If they keep it so that mobs don't drop gear, except maybe humanoid ones, that would be awesome.
Also, melee attacks moving you forward is probably the most realistic take I have seen for combat in any MMO to date. I hope they keep that as well. Melee combat is about give-and-take, you can't press the attack if you don't move forward, and you can't defend if you don't move back.
