Final Fantasy XIV is receiving a lot of hype right now, however its veteran community is warning people to “grind through” A Realm Reborn to get to the “good stuff”. Is this true?

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

More about Final Fantasy XIV:

“Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG and features a persistent world in which players can interact with each other and the environment. Players create and customize their characters for use in the game, including name, race, gender, facial features, and starting class. Unlike in the original release, players may only choose to be a Disciple of War or Magic as a starting class—Disciples of the Hand and Land are initially unavailable. Players must also select a game server for characters to exist on. While servers are not explicitly delineated by language, data centers have been placed in the supported regions (i.e., North America, Europe, Japan) to improve the communication latency between the server and the client computer and players are recommended to choose a server in their region. Regardless of server or language, the game features a large library of automatically translated game terms and general phrases which allow players who speak different languages to communicate.”

  1. Well for starters stop being a sheep, and follow others to tell you what is "worst", and what not. If wasn't for RR to take my attention (in the story), I wouldn't been FFXIV player 6 years ago. It has really great moments, and only tasteless ppl will say otherwise. Especially those that are coming from WoW that tends to skip everything.

Have you ever think about what wrote in the title? If that was the worst part as you claim to be, there would not been any players left in FFXIV, and would have been most dead MMO on the market. So think, think about what you wrote, really. You're not entitled to like everything, but seeing this kind of behaviour is just stupid and pointless, especially to ppl that has been so long with the game. I am saying this because back then you didn't had Stormblood, or Shadowbringers, or Endwalker. You only had this, and yet a lot of ppl appreciated the work.

All I see now is spoiled brats coming to FFXIV to justify the game by pointing their fingers of doom on everything, I think not.

P.S. Last sentence isn't meant for you, Krojak.

  2. You really must not play too many RPG’s if you thought ARR was bad. It was quite literally one of the best stories written for an RPG in the past forty years. Edit: Grinding? I’m in post-Stormblood right now and I also play an actual grind fest in Path of Exile; I haven’t had to grind for anything in FFXIV. Also syncing solves the problem with feeling over levelled.

  3. You're not out of it yet, there is a second credits scenes for arr, there are about 60 quests from where you are to the start of heavensward, last 20 or so quests are on HW level though, so ending off arr is also to look forward to.

  4. This is an unpopular opinion but the Japanese voice acting is great, from start to finish, and I'd feel I'm missing so much if I changed it to English. Some big voices here and there, lots of personality and emotion for everyone, super good quality overall. With the bonus of sometimes getting twice the information if you understand Japanese, since naturally some things get lost in translation 😅

You have quite a bit until you get to HW, but it's good to see you're enjoying the journey ❤️

  5. I played it when it was current and it was alot better back then. You actually had to level up to keep up with your msq. And everyone was doing the same content.

The voice acting does get better. The boss fights also get better. Dungeon layouts stay simple but current expansion dungeons are usually more fun.

I'd like to see your thoughts after each expansion!

  6. Vanilla FF14 used to be way worse. It was excruciatingly padded. Every single little task was full of annoying fetch quests and busy work. That has thankfully been heavily pruned so vanilla is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

  7. I honestly don't get why people rate it so low.
    Even my brother liked ARR.
I would rate it a 6.5, but o ly because it literally is a start up story.
Post ARR after you reach level 50 (the patches) gets much better.
HW just raises the bar way high.
I personally can't decide if Heaven's ward or Shadowbringers is better.
Shadowbringers was way more impactful right away, but over all, Heaven's ward throughout the patches was a stronger story package, imo. Gameplay is was great back then to. Best Dark Knight and Dragoon iterations, imo, back in HW.
    Enjoy your time.

  8. I'd personally recommend sticking to English VA going forward. The English cast has a bit more of a mature feel to it, which I think better suits the overall aesthetic of FFXIV, whereas a lot of Japanese VAs tend to be very anime-like. And this is coming from someone that binges anime on the regular. With the English VAs, you get a bit more diversity with the range of voices and accents, which makes things more immersive as you visit different regions in the game.

  9. I think I would rate them as such (all referencing the MSQ specifically):
    ARR leveling content: 4/10
ARR post max level content: 6/10
    Heavensward: 8.5/10
    Stormblood: 7.5/10
    Shadowbringers: 10/10

  10. agree, the English voice acting is not great in AAR.., but for the sake of Shadowbringers nemesis (!), stick to English.., he does a great voice acting job!(besides, they do mostly all get better after ARR)
