Hype and Expectations

Ashes of Creation is one of the most hyped games on the market. The problem is that it may be approaching unrealistic levels of hype. Like William Wallace in Braveheart, the legend of Ashes of Creation grows with each month, each new reveal, each new piece of content. Unfortunately some content creators are choosing to make Ashes out to be 100% pure Copium, the Game of the Year, Greatest of All Time, before it even gets a chance to launch. Gamers expecting an MMORPG to launch as a 10 are setting themselves up for disappointment.

This is from my 4 March 2022 show, so it’s just a little segment I wanted to hear some responses to.

Oh, and do me a favor and go to https://www.youtube.com/c/pgnmusic and subscribe to that channel. I need to get the 1,000 subscribers necessary to get that channel monetized. Much appreciation if you do, all the money from that channel goes back to Fiverr artists to help get even more DMCA music made.

All of the music you heard in the background during the video belongs to PGN Music. It is a collection of DMCA Free, No Copyright music every Content Creator can use. https://open.spotify.com/artist/4qZWTa2bhoPr2AOsANBazT?si=x6ieaWH8S02EmGX6HW6rbQ

Streamers can use this music during their live streams without risk of DMCA or copyright infringement strikes.

  1. As long it's not over the top then, screw realism in auto attacks, it's a game. Personally don't like animation locks, but combat in a game needs to be experienced to be able to judge it properly. Before NW launched, I really didn't like how combat looked based on videos, but I gave it a shot and had a blast for over 300h.

Wish I could jump into Alpha to be able to test it, and provide feedback but will have to trust that those that are able to test will contribute enough to steer Intrepid into good version of combat.

  2. I think we can take this a step further, and say "You should check your expectations, but keep your standards high." Too often I see a new MMO come out, the hype builds and builds and builds, and people set the game up to be something it will never be. Then it doesn't live up to the hype but then the excuses start for why that's okay, and why a terrible game is an acceptable offering because people "got too hyped".

It's okay to be excited for something. I'm excited for a juicy steak I've ordered, but I'm not going to artificially inflate it's quality, and I also won't just make excuses for the restaurant when they bring me out a dried up hunk of burned meat. Be excited, but also be realistic.

  3. I don't think anyone thinks it will come out perfect on day 1,well hopefully not, more that as the game develops, grows, adds more content it has the potential to grow to what Steven originally wanted, and perfection is just a perspective I have a good mate who thinks ff14 is perfect literally flawless and it is for her but for me not so much, I feel that will be the same for ashes of creation, new worlds should of stayed full loot PvP and not back peddled that being said for me the price was ok I got 300 hours of gameplay out if it so I'm happy with that, my issue with ashes right now is the combat and classes I want to see a lot more on this and in the coming months I'm sure we will.
Another issue is people are acting like this Alpha 2 is the full game launch I hope it does not get judged by the state it is then as much will improve.

  4. Amazes me that everyone whined about the root motion as just “root motion bad” instead of thinking critically and realizing the problem wasn’t that you actually have to follow through on your attacks. The problem was you lunged forward REGARDLESS of what direction you were moving when you used the attack button. Instead, we should have had Omni-directional root motion combat. If I’m moving left and I attack, I should be rooted in a left-step-swing animation.

  5. I'm glad people like you are putting out the videos about hype and expectation. I honestly don't believe in 10/10 with anything as I believe nothing is perfect or ever will be. I think at the most it will hit 7 or 8 as you said, but I think that is what it will always be. I believe the team will always be working to maintain its 7 or 8 status. I honestly don't feel that any MMORPG has ever been "the next big thing" no matter how much I've heard the phrase used. I think people need to just come to terms with the fact that it's ok to just make a good game that is loved and to stop trying to over-hype a game because I've also never seen over-hype be met where people expect it to reach.

I just don't understand why it always has to be "this MMORPG has destroyed all MMORPGs ever made" and it can't just be "this is a great MMORPG and I love playing it as much as any other MMORPG I love playing". I personally believe Ashes of Creation is going to be just as impressive as Guild Wars 2, ESO, BDO, or Archeage was at launch and people will slowly start to notice it's just like any of the MMORPGs before it.
