In this video I go through one of the conversations @Nyce-Gaming and I had on our Voices of Verra podcast. Intrepid wants to ensure that Ashes isn’t a zerg game and are employing things to combat this. I thought it would be fun to draw comparisons to a game that actively promotes highly large scale group pvp and see what they do that helps tip the scales even further into the large groups’ favor.
let me know what you think!

A lot of us are not ESO players. I played it when it came out in 2014 and came back for a couple of the expansions, but the PvP never interested me. AoC, as a PvX game, may provide a better player versus player experience. My main interest is the objective based component rather than a focus on the strictly PvP elements.
Thanks!
Great points about counters and skill gaps. My concern about Zergs in combat is that Steven said castle sieges might not be instanced. This would allow big Zergs to come in and influence the siege one way or another.
Just by the nature of the game, nodes being tied to guilds, taxes and everything that goes with what can be controlled…this game is going to be zergy (is that a word?) AF.
Definitely not saying small groups or maybe solo play (though i can't imagine how easy that'll be) won't find a measure of success, especially if the goal is simply fun and not conquest….but the majority of PvP is going to be large scale zerg battles.
It has to be, just by what's at stake and the nature of the game.
Nice take!
This having 20 different sets of armor takes away from actually skills and strategy. I'd rather have 1 set I can customize to my game play style instead of 100s of different sets
Having been through GW2 for years then doing ESO for years its great that a conversation is happening now about zergs. There will be zergs, if you plan to play AOC you better plan on it. You see videos referencing "hard core pvp guilds" do most of you know what that means? It means they have roles for specific classes, those people spec/gear exclusively for that role. They coordinate in discord and basically center their entire game play around having success in PVP. Now you will say "ya but that doesnt mean they will zerg" no they wont zerg, the other 30 people who map in to where they are fighting will. This was what happened to ESO, it was never one dedicated group that zerged the map, it was the surfers to that group that did and the solos/small groups that happened to get in the way. AOC isnt ESO or GW2 I concede that but the whole zerg issue isnt a matter of game mechanics its a matter of player behavior. I'm not seeing how AOC creates the secret to non zerg PVP but I will be happy if they do. Its just yet more pressure on a title that hasnt even made it to beta yet. We have seen this over and over again, people pin hopes on a new game and its mechanics and are upset when they get the same outcomes.
This is my biggest fear for the game. I don’t want to run into the never end wave a zerglings. Come at me ten at a time boys I can handle that but 60 of you at once is a little rough.
I’m ready for them to turn me loose with the combat system. I like New World but sometimes it’s so frustrating fighting in zergy OPR all the time.
