What is Ashes of Creation?

Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMO experience. Our world structure is dynamic and built to react to the actions of our players. Cities will rise and fall, their populations based on the history of the world as the players create it. Quests will unlock as these populations gather, their needs grow, and secrets are unlocked. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real time, players will have the ability to destroy what they’ve created, paving the way for new development, new populations, and real change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your world. Gone are the days of static worlds, change is here to stay.

Risk Vs Reward
All across Verra, you have the opportunity to experience massive warfare, participate in epic trade caravans, and gather valuable components to craft exquisite items. Not only will your fellow players be your adversaries; the creatures of the land and the very environment itself will pose a constant and fresh challenge. Will you siege castles to become royalty, defeat other guilds to showcase your prowess, shape the marketplace by being a successful trader, or earn renown by developing your artisan crafting skills? This is your story, you tell us!

  1. I personally feel Ashes is taking a pretty safe road with their art style. Definitely nothing to standout ish. At least as far as river lands and the desert go. I mean it looks great for sure but it's pretty generic as far as landscapes go. I believe ruins are ruins for a reason so I don't agree with asmons take. I don't think the undead and minotaurs are going to be dressing that place up 🤣.

But I do agree the game needs content. I think the node system will supply more content than most servers will ever experience just due to the way nodes work. But content can also be subjective. Everyone is saying content content content. But one player could be completely happy never leaving the area of their freehold and that could be content enough for them. Just asking for more content doesn't go far, we could end up getting low quality filler. I don't think intrepid is about that but y'know what I mean. What is content anyways. Everyone wants something different.

  2. What are your thoughts on the art direction of Ashes of Creation? Do you think it is a good idea for the world to look baron since we haven't been there in over 1000 years? Should they make certain areas more stylized? Would love to know your thoughts!

  3. The original, hyper realistic demo for UE5.0 was somewhat deceptive, as one of its prime groundbreaking new features, Nanite, which allows the gritty, mind-blowing fine detail, did not work with landscape or foliage. That scene was composed almost entirely of static meshes, with most of the runtime being an interior scene. Originally, Nanite did not offer any, or only minimal, benefit to open world exteriors. Only in 5.1 was Nanite extended to landscape (mesh) and in 5.3 Preview to foliage and some programmers I know tell me that Nanite for landscape still has issues. Intrepid is currently, by community reports, working to upgrade to 5.2.1 and that upgrade is expected to significantly improve the look of the game. Prior to Alpha 2, I fully expect them to upgrade to the three or four new releases of UE5, with a lag of some weeks or months. In a year or two, I believe that AoC will have the most realistic graphics yet seen in an open game. I don't think it will achieve the hyperrealism of trailers or demos, and will remain stylized to a large degree, but it will certainly be astonishing compared to what we see today. As far as Asmongold, he clearly favors stylized graphics, which many do, but I personally much prefer realism in my immersive, alternate universe. I don't doubt that Intrepid started with UE4 because it is free for development, but I am certain that AoC will reap untold ongoing benefits from that choice.

  4. Art direction is only more important if you want a quick grab and go! Gameplay and content is the most important part. Archeage proved this to me which I also thought looked very generic tbh. What made me interested in that was ships and the kites.

Archeage which was my favorite MMORPG, and I played that one completely alone lol

Comeon Steven! Bring back that glory!

  5. Good video I agree. Takes saying it needs to be more stylized is not really the right direction…Pretty sure it comes from nostalgia back to older mmorpg days and what they think is epic based on the memories created in their mind.

There will be memorable locations int he game for sure, it isn't fair to judge every area as being epic in a world as big as AoC, that is extremely realistic for every location to be important and memorable.

Also feel the take it doesn't have memorable locations is very silly, if we go back to the tower of Carphin location that is meant to be important and had quite a memorable look to it. Between the tower element you see int he distance and vertically it creates as you move closer to it or inside it. The effects of the magic on the area and change of the story lines, and plenty of other elements. When they want a area to look special their art team will hit it for sure, it just won't be every single place.

I could go more into detail on this but its meh just comes down to people don't know what they are talking about, there is a market for people that want a realistic looking game. Some people are not into the more stylized look.

  6. I feel like the artists are going to be going ham over the next few years texturing up these basic world locations. Also wow had player housing in the alpha but they removed it. Warcraft 3 is an rts afterall 😛

But yeah i totally agree, the flavour of the world will be unique to each server due to the node/freehold system

  7. I actually agree with this for the most part. The art style of Ashes is going to come from its races and their cultures. I don't think the game will be super stylized, nor should it be. If they can nail the uniqueness in their races, like the Nikua are shaping up to be, that's all the stylizing they need.

  8. At the moment its either super stylized or super realistic when it comes to games. I personally would prefer it in the middle with a bit of both. Ashes for me needs to move a little more to the stylized direction so that people know its Ashes just from screenshots but the new character model art style look perfect, like the Vek and Nekua Dwarves, the older race models still look very generic and uncanny so I cant wait to see their update.

  9. I like the more realistic style. I'm so tired of the stylized, and I'm not alone in that. Archeage wasn't stylized, which is a huge inspiration for Steven.
We are at a age now anyway that graphics aren't really having leaping improvements anymore. AoC will still look pretty 5 or even 10 years from now.

  10. I don't think Asmon meant to suggest that Ashes should become more cartoony when he said it needs more style. He has acknowledged multiple times how good some areas look because of the realism and fidelity of the graphics. What he's always critiquing is the "generic art style", as in the lack of memorable assets that make an area or the whole game stand out, and the "identity for the game". Right after you cut the clip, he started giving examples of what he would change to make the area more recognizable: "shattered stained glass windows, banners at the top, broken pikes with zombie or minotaur heads, make it feel more memorable". He also mentioned that fidelity only gets you half way there, and I agree on that too. UE5 is only a tool to create art, it doesn't create it for you. Don't mix art style with fidelity! That being said, I agree with you that the art team is extremely talented, and it shows. It blows my mind how accurate the 3D models are in comparison to the concept art. So clearly, the issue is not talent but art direction and world building, or maybe just a lack of time and iterations.

  11. “This area doesn’t seem memorable in a big way.” If you were to give it ugly “stylized” art like WoW, Borderlands, Valorant, etc, it literally still wouldn’t be memorable lol.

  12. I get that Asmon has a really large following … that doesn't mean that everything he says is valid or correct. Its one still just one guys opinion. First off, this is pre Alpha II. There are still many passes that every team needs to do yet to add detail to the game. Also, as you said Vlhadus the world of Verra has been devoid of the vast majority of life that occupied the planet for millennia. Most of what is left are ruins. The players, in returning to Verra, will be the world builders. The character in the game will be the villages, towns, cities, and metropolis's. The character will be the guild halls and the free holds. All of that is player built and clearly not in the world yet. But what Asmon doesn't seem to get is that the character will be the world itself…the points of interest like waterfalls, and mountains should be pretty spectacular in UE5. When they were walking down the path in the last live stream and the suns rays were shining thru the tree canopy I just kept thinking how beautiful the world looked. I didn't think for one second that there was anything generic about it.

  13. Assmong just wants cartoony wow graphics because he's living in the past, It's not the art style that's going to set it apart It's the gameplay loops and new concepts that Intrepid are introducing to AoC.
I like realism because it's immersive and that's very important when playing a MMO so you can be invested in the world and your character.

  14. I honestly hate this discussion in general. Name one person that won't play a game because it isn't "stylized." The statement always made about this topic is like "Oh when I go back and see x picture or x video I know what games it's from because of the style." Does that make someone want to play the game more? What does it actually add to the game itself? High Fantasy/realism is a style is it not? Once optimized, it'll look incredible. I don't think an art style keeps something from looking dated.. I don't agree with the statement that realism ages differently than certain styles.
    Maybe it's just me

  15. For people stylized is Cartoon or anime, if is near reallity is bad… Is like my friend that told me for him Wow looks better then red dead redemption 2 because is more "stylized and gets never gets old"…. People are just crazy when nostalgia hits…
