This YouTube video is a preview of the upcoming MMORPG Ashes of Creation, focusing on its Story Arc system. What if questing didn’t suck? Has Ashes of Creation fixed the questing hub problem in MMOs? The Story Arc system is Ashes of Creations take on Questing and it’s a very interesting and dynamic one. Not unlike their node system where players create their own cities and narratives.
Story Arcs are dynamic quests on a larger scale, with multiple possible endings depending on player choice during each chapter. The chapters have their own timeframes and can cause changes across the entire server, including changing environments, monsters, NPCs, quests, and pathways. Story Arcs can branch into different stories, with the server taking aggregates of the choices made by players to decide what will happen in later phases of the story arc.
The Ashes of Creation video provides an example of one of the Story Arcs called “The Blood Still Due,” which takes place in the Riverlands zone. This story arc has an intriguing and dark story, and the world shows it wonderfully.
The ability to shape the world is a key aspect of Ashes of Creation and that plays out in their Story Arc system which adds a lot of lore and story to the world but does it in a way that encourages player involvement and autonomy.
Overall, this video provides a detailed introduction to the Story Arc system in Ashes of Creation, highlighting its dynamic and interactive nature, and how it differs from other MMOs. I hope it leaves you excited for Ashes of Creation from a PvE perspective and eager to experience the game for yourselves.
I’ve talked at length about some of my issues with Ashes of Creation, notably their PVP focus but this is intriguing and I wanted to share.

Spread the curse….definitely spread the curse.
if you think of it – Quest Hubs were first invented in Diablo 2 😉 and then Blizz expanded on that some more
One of the main drawbacks of AoC for me is the excessive visual effects of the spells. As a tank, I need to keep track of the enemies movements and aggro, but that becomes difficult with all the flashy explosions. I know I could adjust my settings, but I wonder why the developers are not aware of this problem.
This makes me doubt the quality of the game and its design choices. I have been feeling that the game is too focused on making everything look shiny and adding more mounts, and cosmetics, instead of creating a balanced and immersive experience.
Some people may think that the game is still in development and that criticizing it is unfair. However, I have seen enough evidence to doubt the quality of the game design. For example, the combat system that was shown at Pax (I forget which one) was disappointing and the attempt to create a battle royale to "test" combat. These were not minor mistakes, but major choices that reflected poorly on the game.
I supported this game in 2017 and want it to succeed but now I am not so sure it will.
I feel stupid for having backed Pantheon (aka "Sword Citizen") instead of Ashes. I miss Brad.
Ashes looks cool and all, but I will not be playing. Reason simply being always on pvp. I know they put in stuff to try and stifle griefers, but we all know wont deter. Also why cool and all looking, I feel they are tryin to launch with way to many systems, and we seen what's happened when you have to many…..cough cough WoW. Add in what a potential 64 classes…..good luck balancing. Overall I really feel this over hyped, so no matter how good it is, I feel it gonna fall flat of peoples expectation because they will be too high.
ok, that's pretty cool. thanks for showing that to us! i hope it's implemented well. i'm worried about what happens as players come in later in the game or if i wasn't uber enough to partake. or worse, what happens if i'm part way through a quest and the world changes?!
How is this different than GW2 dynamic events? things would spawn, people would crush that particular threat and it would reset and come back 20 minutes later
Story Arcs is what Guild Wars 2 said they were going to have and tried to implement but really didn't.
It's a very interesting way of implementing an immersive storytelling system. I like the idea but will be interested to see it in practice. I just hope they can tone some of the 'over the topness' that I am seeing in the game ie flashy spells, animations and even to some degree the armor. Hopefully they'll release some news soon about the next stages of testing. A lot of their fanbase is getting antsy.
One man's suck is another mans pleasure. That's questing I'm taking about.😂
