I think it’s an interesting discussion.
I sometimes play GW2 on the side and do raids. It does not have or allow damage meters (outside a testing zone), and as a fully zug zug dps build it’s annoying not knowing how you perform on the fights.
On the other hand – I genuinely think warcraftlogs destroyed Classic WoW for many people. Not dmg meters but the parses.
Would like to hear both sides of the argument. Seems there are pros and cons to each.

One of the big contentions of developing an MMORPG is that the UI becomes insane when people don't know how to manage it. If they want the UI to look uniform, clean, and minimal (GW2), you almost HAVE to do this.
One of the coolest ideas I've heard that's not been used is that "addons" would actually be "tomes" in game that you can keep, but have to find/craft.
At the end of the day, clicking through a combat log and working through averages will give the player the personal knowledge they're looking for. My suspicion is that people use DPS meters not to see if they're doing personal best, but to see that coveted #1 dps. If DPS is less important than other mechanic output, it becomes somewhat irrelevant.
GW2 found a way to really draw me in without having a DPS meter or addons. Because the gameplay was really good.
