  1. 1:53:30 FFXIV player here. I believe this specific example with FFXIV is easy to say now since y'know.. hindsight. Not only this but many people were unaware of FFXIVs existence during its first launch compared to now. If you take the same game and relaunched it, but it DIDN'T execute much the same as ARR did in 2013 (to great success) then the argument of "what is the game now" would likely be null & void. FFXIV is a very specific outlier/anomoly where this simply isn't the case for most games (*cough* NewWorld). The truth is, for many, you only get one chance to make a great initial first impression. If the mark is missed, then the ship has already sailed for those people. Summit1g makes a point of this during his interview with steven back in 2020. In marketing, it's difficult to earn back a customer if they've already been dissatisfied or disenfranchised. That is not to say it is impossible however.

    Do I believe companies should be given some leniency if a game is within an alpha/beta state? Sure, absolutely. Although, the current state of affairs is that sadly the views of many players are shaped by past experiences of being burned in MMOs. They can't really be blamed. Steven is not only understanding of this, but is a casualty of it (the "hurt dog" quote was cathartic"). For this reason is what drew me to ashes because steven underands this. That said, I do believe there's also some detractors that come along to cause malice to ashes and are disingenuous towards its development.
