Here’s a mock skill tree created and illustrated to show how to cause players to make choices when designing a build or selecting skills. Vertical progression paths fail to entice or force the dilemma of opportunity costs. Having players get a limited amount of skill points isn’t enough, the true customization comes when choices and option selection is mandatory.

  1. That choice comes in augments. No matter what class you are you'll have 4 augments for each skill, only one of which can be applied. (Some skills can also be affected by racial, religious and social org too)

    The opportunity cost on the base tree is that you only have so many points and going too far in one direction blocks our choices in the other directions.

  2. I'd like to see those 1/1 skills turn into 1/3 or 1/5 or something. So its not just "which passive effects do you want applied to your skill?" But "How much do you want to focus and/or empower the particular passives of that skill?"
