Most people seem to think this game will be a walk in the park, or have not thought about the way the games many systems will cause them to lose a lot of progress. In this video, I try to show people the different ways the game will be super hardcore, and try to convince to play it anyway.

3 hours at night every night or 6 hours every 3 nights, if you can work that into your schedule, then this game might be for you.
If you are willing to build your dream and fight to hold it, this game might be for you
If you want to work with others to make the best of a given item type, this game might be for you.
If you want to do something that this game allows you to do, that the real world does not, then this might be the game for you
EVE, Albion, and Lineage taught me to die tired fighting rather than running. Sometimes when you fight even if you're not skilled you can win. I have never heard of anybody winning by running
I’m going to spend countless hours sitting at my desktop PC playing a video game of a phantasy realm that will make me neglect life and miss out on opportunities in true reality just so that I can be good in a game that no one cares about in the grand scheme of things. This is how all MMORPGs are, but I still play them knowing I’m wasting my life on something that won’t matter in 5 years.
Hardcore games make the casual expierence more valuable in my opinion.
EVE's has few main rules but #1 Nver fly what you cant afford to lose. This will actually make tactics with group play important and thereby giving value to the casual player who actually follows orders.
Maybe you just like being the person who logs in on Friday night for the big Max number fights awesome thanks for the help. Prehaps you prefer going behind enemy lines in an 8 person party and gathering intel and harrasing enemy reinforcements. Better yet you like to sit in the city delegating the logistics of your your guilds dream.
In an game like ashes every contribution helps since you have to expect to watch it all burn down one day. Then the best thing happens a redemption story.
@xillin whats your thoughts on running Multiple accounts and spying on Opposing guilds? Its a big thing in EVE online and i could see the politics in Ashes breeding espionage.
nah m a y n e imma play this until I go blind
Funny thing, i play Albion 3 hours per day, my friend play around 16 hours every day, in the end of the month i still need to give him Money to buy the premium….
The thing is you can play less hours but you can be more productive if you know what you are doing, he is greedy as hell , play alot of hours but the major of the time are losing Money doing dumb choices
In my opinion, if this game as hardcore as you state in this video it will likely have a small player-base in the long term. As a degenerate that has more then 3000+ hours into Rust where all progress resets weekly, I don't think large scale setbacks are good for an MMO expirence. My three biggest biggest reasons for this is –
1.Large Scale setbacks cause a player to play more cautious and explore less – If a player is farming something, and can lose it all at a moments notice they will likely make shorter more monotonous sessions closer to safe zones. Players will not want to try new unsafe things because humans are fairly loss adverse. We feel much better avoiding losing 100 dollars rather then gaining 100 dollars. While travelling they wont explore, because a neat discovery will not out-way the desire to lose hours and hours of progression.
2.Hardcore games bleed their player-base – An MMO especially a subscription based one needs a steady stream of new players to keep funded. New players will fall prey to these 4+ hour setbacks much more then veteran players. If I am max level/geared out why would I farm 4 hours for gold, when I could just pk someone else and take all their progress? This will make new player retention horrible, especially a few months after launch as low level players will have to hide from higher levels making progression slower and more stressful.
3.It punishes the non-elite players – Players outside the top percentage/strong groups will not be incentivized to try and compete with the top echelon of players. If the winner of an interaction is always incentivized and the loser is always punished it will create a snowball effect where eventually one group just becomes to strong to compete with. As this gaps widens the top few groups will slowly become more and more powerful while potential challengers will have no agency to catch up to these groups. This creates an non-interactive system which discourages groups/players from climbing in status.
None of this is to say im not a fan of hardcore games, I very much am and most of my favorite video games have lots of player punishment(dark souls, rust, binding of issac, ! I just don't think a high degree of player punishment is good for an MMO. Most hardcore games combat these issues by regularly resetting the everyone's game state back to ground 0 and letting you try again. In an MMO you cant do this as player progression is one of if not the main allure of the game. My solution would be similar to runescapes wilderness system. Some activities would be much more rewarding but have an element of risk, where others would reward much less but with near 0 risk of an outside player hindering your personal progression.
TLDR: Progression is king in an MMO. If you want to maintain a large player-base respect the players time and have them opt in to the level of risk v reward they want to experience. If that's not the aim and intrepid is okay with having a small niche community then punish away!
Too hardcore?! Haha, no way, I'm too hardcore for the game !
It’s a rare privilege to be one of the first 1000 subscribers on a channel that is well on its way to being one of the most relevant in its respective niche. Keep doing this man you’re absolutely killing it
A good game doesn't waste your time .. A good game makes you want to waste your time 😛 .
With todays everything boost everything glow and bs.. yea.. most people are lazy to play.. lol
When you have everything to lose, everything matters. Whether you’re fighting to protect your node or evading people trying to kill your caravan, your heart will be pounding and that serotonin will be flowing.
Ashes = Ultima Online + pve hybrid this decade needs. The fact that I can still find very active UO servers 24 years post launch intrigues me.
Yes….it always comes back to UO for me.
I am a surgeon and i love to play mmo games in my limited time. I am lost in details about this game’s system and since alpha i also lost my interest on this game in that regard because personally simplicity matters to me
Dont discourage your aunt, everyone can play at their own pace, different strokes for different folks.
I think you're pushing a very negative take on the game that hasn't even been halfway accomplished. Personally I think if you can put away 2 to 3 hrs a day every other day, you'll be fine.
Rift isn't a WoW clone, it was similar in some respects but it had open world PVP and settlements and outposts being attacked by rift invasions constantly.
You hate pvp because you haven't experienced the lineage2 pvp and pvp feel that this game is going to try copy and improve. You are not going to loose your stuff if someone kill you, you'll have to be corrupted for that to happen.
as a person with 10k hours in eve all I can say is welcome to the sand box
I found your channel by accident but the way you talk & describe everything made me stay & listen to the end & although you admit that you hate PVP & it's not something that interest you in the slightest, while I am the opposite I play only OW-PVP mmorpg, I liked that you are determined to play AoC even though you are aware that you will be forced to take part in stuff that will frustrate you & lots of time make you waste your time as you said, so I congratulate you for that, you are not a total carebear, you are half-carebear hehe 😛
Anyway you won a new subscriber 😉
I can remember playing Star Wars Galaxies where you and your guild mates would spend days and days building up your base and then log on one morning to see it completely destroyed. If the node system in Ashes of Creation will be anything similar to that, then yes this game is way too hardcore for me! The many grieving opportunities in this game will be too tempting for the trolls!
Although im not into PvP either, the system being proposed creates real value to your actions, goods, services etc without endless inflation that exists in most games where there is no losses in the economic systems, or artificially added losses. Still, its bound to be painful at times.
If its going to cater to hardcore crowd, then good luck to them. The filthy casuals like me pay the bills, no casuals playing, means no money coming in. A hardcore crowd alone, cant support a game, so I see monetizing being a big thing.
Ok here is the disconnect I get. Steven has specifically stated they are targeting EVERYBODY. They are going after kids and grandma's for their player demographic. This has been a vocal objection for a lot of people because many people agree that it is detrimental to a game. The thing is, we haven't been shown the casual content.
don't see this as hardcore, I see it as going back to basics. your gear/items and even your character don't mean anything unless you have something to lose. by having these small risks it makes the game more enjoyable and engaging.
In world of warcraft most players are zombies because you don't lose your gear or risk anything, for example.
Comment 101 had me playing a March in my head. 101 patch on my shoulder…
If the decoration example happens your housing/freehold will have a blueprint that you will receive. Once you gain a new housing you can apply the blueprint to have your decorations back. Only example I can see that is affected is high level node housing trying to fit at a low lvl housing.
Probably too hard core but it is not as hard core as so many open world PVP games of the past, but without this risk of loss to other players, none of the theme park MMOs feel like they are actually Massively multiplayer. The corruption system vs the funnelled profitable pvp opportunities seem to take away from bullying gankfests. I am not even that worried about feeling if I take two months off I return to that many losses as aside informed risk of mats losses, I can rebuild easy enough, and I can hardly expect the rest of my life to stop unchanging if I neglect it so why should I just keep my disused house in a dynamic city in game? If I do take time off, if I sell my land and mats, can I actually lose anything?
Sounds like tarkov for an mmo.
If you remain green you will not lose any completed items
I have put thousands of hours in different mmorpgs and games like ark and dayz witch gives me a very good look into loosing my shit and starting the grind over if this game is anywhere close to what there promising this should be my forever mmorpg
I hoping that the true casuals jump into this game to second life it. And they are there to run shops and artesian. In the game design there is meant to a place for game play for non-adventuring classes.
Have you ever played EvE Online? I think I'll be okay.
I really want to do the crafting and I'm not big on just PvP for PvP's sake either. I hate elements of ganking in games. That being said, I want to be part of a group of people working toward common goals with real stakes, and I know I can find a niche where I'll be able to contribute in a meaningful way to it, even in battles. It really is the risk and stakes that adds that sense of accomplishment, and I've noticed I've started to slow down a bit in my response time over the past decade. Now, as long as I don't have to worry about my freehold being destroyed when I'm offline, or not requiring actual hours of work to get it back to where it should be, then I'm okay. I realize there's some degree of risk but there needs to be a balance, too, so that those of us who can't live and breathe this game day in and out living off of other people to provide for our real world expenses and needs, can have a reasonable expectation of offline "safety"… that is the one main aspect that may make me not stay with the game. A game shouldn't demand so much of your time and life to be viable. Not saying there shouldn't be a grind, but that there shouldn't be massive punishments to your prior efforts if you can only log in for 10 or so hours in a given week.
Did they confirm there will be no server layering/sharding? If so that will mean local server reputation really does matter, its a big deal. It was nice to play wow classic to have that feeling again, you see the same people day in and day out and really do form bonds with the good players you run across. Good healers, good tanks, pumper dps that don't stand in fire all the get the friend invite
Solid input my dude. EVE is a very accurate comparison. The only way to guarantee you won’t lose your hard earned resources is to never undock, but you also lose out on the great potential experiences that come with the dangers of the game world. I met 3 of my closest friends, that I’ve now been gaming with for years, when they blew up my stealth bomber in a wormhole, lol
I enjoy PVP – when I am focused on doing PVP (I've spent hundreds of hours in FFXIV, FFXIV, Unreal Tournament 2007 and 2004, Quake 3 back to the original Quake.) I don't especially enjoy getting attacked while questing. I still have a vivid memory of questing in Nagrand on a Level 65 Death Knight getting murdered multiple times by a Level 80 Druid – I don't really find that fun.
I also never initiate World PVP. If I happen across an enemy player I usually just ignore them and usually they do the same.
I do want to give Ashes a try but I think I'll wait until after I see how the first few months go.
It will not be as hard core as you try to make it sound.
First , nodes sieges will be announced at least 2 days in advance , and will take place during prime time of the server region. If you do lose your freehold , you'll lose some resources but not the Player housing designs and decorations, who are retained and can be placed again later if the housing is destroyed during a node siege.
And if the corruption is made correctly and you play with friends , you will not die on every day you play , it's a risk but not a certitude.
I think "hardcore" is what a lot of people are after since a lot of MMORPGs today are so soft and not very rewarding due to not being punishing if you eff up.
WoW is a great example of that. Vanilla WoW and TBC were unpolished and didn't have the quality of life improvements that we've been used to since 2010-ish.
Vanilla and TBC were very punishing and also very rewarding. MMORPGs are supposed to be "time consuming" in the sense that the game is so good that you WANT to waste your time playing the game. I hope AoC live up to that.
"you are risking your time playing the game" sounds like a bad game design too me
You look like Thor but if he wasn't a Fortnite noob
