Ashes of Creation – Why "Where's the GAMEPLAY?" is a Legit Concern

Narc’s recent video made some great points about graphics in MMOs, but I feel like he missed the real reasons to be concerned about the apparent lack of focus on game play in Ashes of Creation so far — one which will hopefully change in the September live stream.

  1. It’s true I almost didn’t take a chance on “Vampire Survivors” simply because it looked like old trash. It would have been a shame though because it turned out to be 90 something hours of adrenaline fueled fun. It just reminded me that gameplay is more important than graphics for myself at least. So yah, come on Steven show us some gameplay!

  2. Great insights as always! I think the team, especially Steven, know the immense importance of gameplay and have chosen to be extra cautious with what they show. I also think it’s their response to the unfortunate misunderstanding and general poor response the alpha 1 received. Add those two elements together and you get the result of what we’ve been shown thus far this year.

My best guess is that major combat reveals are their targeted marking for the lead into alpha 2 to build the most hype and attention for the project as they enter the next phase.

But if this is not true, and they have not put the effort they should into combat to this point, we all should be very concerned to say the least.

  3. Isn't UE5 more of an obstacle when it comes to implementing MMORPG-capable network code? Because to my knowledge there is no major MMORPG based on the Unreal Engine or Unity to date. WoW, FF14, ESO etc. all run on custom engines. There must be a reason for that.

  4. Many of the systems are entwined with each other which complicates things, there are very few stand alone systems. Also I am not sure you are aware (probably are) that internal resting continues with employees, family, and friends. It's not like they are doing nothing but focus on the systems. But I am with you we need more information on whatnis happening in the background.

  5. I agree what matters most is if the game is fun. The base line systems usually is where the fun begins like combat and how the player can interact with the world thats what get people to enjoy the initiatial experience. More complex systems are what keep players long term. Graphics and sfx just make everything feel better.

  6. I agree with you that this is the biggest concern or question mark hanging over the game right now. I hadn't thought about the fact that the specific combat implementation and network performance can't be evaluated independently of each other, and need to be iterated on together. One thing I wonder about, and maybe you have some thoughts about this, is that server performance limitations should increasingly be evaporating for these types of games due to the continued rapid pace of advancement of computing technology. AMD's Zen 4 generation of CPUs launching this month have something like 30-75% improved performance per watt compared to the Zen 3 generation launched just 2 years earlier. At what point is there just enough raw server power that this is no longer an issue? Or is the bottleneck the client side internet bandwidth?

  7. I have a really hard time understanding where did people got the idea the game is going Action? its Hybrid, always been hybrid ever since 2017 they said its hybrid, they showed Basic Melee weapons attacks which are action as they were back in A1 when no one said it's action – they didn't change Nothing about it from A1 besides animations and effects

  8. Awesome video man! I feel like showing gameplay would show the ashes community almost a sigh of relief or a sign of panic depending on what they show. The systems are so interconnected that how many systems can they show at once without people understanding the full scope? I would be curious either way personally…

  9. Pure copacola is too strong for me and I can only tolerate it diluted 😉 (Narc is just not my style, so I only watch reactions to his videos)
I would say it's a bit like judging book by it's cover. Cover/graphics can grab your initial attention and interest in the book/game, but if story/gameplay is not good, you will be dropping it quickly.
