On Friday we had a great show, we talked about a lot of topics, and we had a great discussion about fresh start servers and server mergers. We know these are inevitable. In a game that requires a fixed number of players on the server, you either have to have OMG amazing server player acquisition management or you need to eventually plan for a server merge. When you introduce Fresh Start Servers into the mix you just make it worse.

I agree, fresh servers are not a good thing. Hopefully the continual DLC/Expansions/Updates will keep population alive.
We had an issue with WoW Classic where a) There were not enough servers at launch and b) The game does come to an end (and we knew that).
Hopefully Intrepid will actually cater for enough players globally and the new content does come at a good pace.
NO. Fresh start servers are not bad or good. The games are bads or goods. If we play competitive game, but gear give us too big advantage and/or there are critical and limited resources without chance to get them as new players players will leave and less new players will join in. Games need less gear/resource advantages or more log in points (example new patches, new levels with new gear). Or this games have to start new (FS) servers to keep population or they will lose more and more players. FS is problem when the game is totally broken. Fix the problems and keep your population! New servers will be fine too. This is simple demand-offer. If you can't offer what players want they will chose other game. Keeping hostages in the cages is not the solution.
No to fresh start servers but a BIG PLUS for a progressive server with higher rates where you give the player an option to transfer to other servers. That way you have fresh blood going into a new server to learn the game at a higher pace and then join the older servers. That way you have new players learning the game and feeling like they are progressing and then throw them at the servers that are on lower blood supplied.
This was and still is one of the biggest problems with Archeage. They never did a progression server to pump the older servers activity. Instead all those fresh starts made the population split more and more and more.
Hope Steven and Interprid don't make the same mistakes as Archeage and put on their road map or where ever they want to have, this info. No to fresh start, Yes to progressive server.
i would prefere a season based mmorpg the best part of a mmorpg for me is the start .
Good video.
Does a server merge cause a similar issue to a fresh start server, to a lesser extent? New players would want a guild invite to the new server to enjoy the nearest thing to a fresh start that they can get.
