Graphics are a bonus. I would play Everquest Online Adventures Frontiers for the ps2 and that game-play and the mechanics were amazing! That game was legit better than WOW and unless you played it you probably wouldn't agree. Played that game for 10yrs. I wish they would bring it back even with the old graphics I don't care.
Thinking back 20 years… ya games didn't really improve much gameplay wise, just appearance.
I agree that FF is easier to understand than WoW when it comes to the effects in battle but it is definitely frustrating to figure out what the hells happening when you've got a metric fuckton of effects happening at once. I personally found the huge raids to be confusing as hell. Luckily I was a pure DPS build and didn't have that issue with raids most of the time but just with the few times I have had an ass load of effects to deal with I imagine that was hell for the tanks keeping track of all the buffs and debuffs.
Problem with black desert online is theres no game to play. I really wish bdo was a real game with dungeons and fun and social experiences it just has like no gameplay, which is a shame because the classes are fun to play and look good.
Something I could never get past with other mmos besides wow is the animations, wow is so smooth to play. I don't even know exactly what it is. It just feels better imo.

Imma be honest, WoW's graphics at the time were laughable in comparison to Half Life 2, which release a couple months prior. The physics and graphics blew alot of people away at the time.
If graphics are too demanding then you’ve cut your potential player base to only those who have a gaming PC.
I played WoW from vanilla through Legion, never ever, ever felt the need to turn down effects to play the game, got the mechanics, could see what was going on zero issues. I've been playing FFXIV since ARR and I HAVE to turn party effects to limited to see the much clearer mechanic markers, because if I don't, I can't actually see the ground as a melee.
Tbh seeing ue5 and how it works has inspired me to want to try and learn game design (it's been a rough journey)
