Ashes of Creation vs The Riot MMO

While there is still a lot to learn about the Riot MMO, we do know a lot about Ashes of Creation. And with what I believe the Riot MMO might end up being, I think they have a very good chance of being VERY different games. So, I don’t think they are direct competitors and I don’t think it is a ONE OR THE OTHER situation. I think both can succeed with their target audiences. The Riot MMO certainly has potentially to appeal to a larger player base, but Ashes can also carve out it’s niche within the genre.

  1. Asmon said it best, the neck beards haven't gone away they are just patiently waiting for a good mmo, that they can sink their teeth into and I think Ashes will be that game.
I too, want both games to succeed, but I won't be playing Riots. I'm done with wow, I just can't stand the Disney on crack art anymore, and Riot looks just the same to me, just turned up a notch. Plus I'm sure since ghostcrawler is leading it it will have ptw or pfc, and I detest all of those. Will it be massive? I'm sure, will it have meaningful content? I doubt it, theme park rush to lvl cap is my guess and I'm done with those types.
Steven, has stated that he never intended this game to be as big as wow or to be the wow killer. He just wants a fun meaningful game to get lost in and I can't wait to jump in. Great vid!

  2. It's not even a debate. Riot MMO has the biggest budget, the best talent, the pedigree, the history of results, the world, the lore, the everything.

Ashes is a glorified indie game with a money-mark angel investor who made his money from a pyramid scheme and is charging you 200$ for intangible skins and a tech demo.

  3. Good point of mentioning Riot's target. When LoL came out, it was considered easier and more accessible (free to play) than the other MOBAs at the time. It wasn't actually considered to be a better game, just more popular. HoN was arguably a better MOBA, but it never had the popularity of LoL with a "box" cost. As with any media, the most popular thing isn't necessarily the best but it is more enjoyable/accessible for the average person or player. Riot is very smart with its mass appeal and accessibility, and will surely make a more popular (but not necessarily a subjectively better) game than Intrepid.

  4. i think AoC will gross higher at launch but Riot MMO will do better long term. Why? i feel like Riot would do a better job taking into consideration it's casual players more so then AoC would and yes casual players do make up a large chunk of the player base. you don't have to strictly cater to casuals but there should also be ways they can actually progress through the entire game and not feel left out in any type of content because they simply don't have as much time to play as other people.

  5. Feel like AoC will appeal to players who want a more risk vs reward game with investments, for players who wanna work to build something worth defending and being proud of, knowing full well it can be taken away. Riot's MMO might lean more toward the easy-going typical MMO style, maybe more story driven like Final Fantasy XIV, social, but nothing to lose.

  6. One concern I have for these two MMOs is their launch window being close together. I really hope Ashes of Creation comes out a year or preferably two years before the Riot MMO because if they were to both release/launch within months of each other I could see it significantly hindering Ashes specifically.

Most certainly they will both exist and be playable eventually but I sincerely hope Ashes gets at minimum a year head start since its obviously the smaller game with less funds than the goliath that is Riot Games. I would fear them both launching too close to another would negatively impact Ashes of Creation and specifically the attention it gets within the MMO market share.

I would like to see both these games prosper in different areas because I believe the genre does need a new king (WoW needs to be dethroned in order for the genre to progress) but also it needs a game like Ashes that can bring back some of the old school feeling and show you can still succeed that way in the present. Also, the genre itself needs more western developed MMOs to succeed in general.

  7. RIOT MMO is certainly going for the FFXIV/WoW crowd, I'm expecting a theme-park MMO with tons of side content. AoC I feel like will blow up but very quickly die down and find a solid niche audience.
