In The First Episode of my new series Ashes of Innovation, we take a look at gearing in MMOs, and what other games Ashes of Creation should steal from to make the best possible gearing system in the entire genre. Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft, Star Wars The Old Republic, Rift, etc.

  1. honestly, i loved Swtors system back before its 2.0 launched. adaptive/custom gear was great bcuz it was rare then and , yes, you worked hard for it, but didnt have to get rid of it with a new xpac becuase you could swap out the mods, effectively keeping it and upgrading it simultaneously .

  2. I've yet to see a gearing system in an MMO that really blew me away. But I bet the best way to find one, as is with most things I believe, is to take the pieces of what works from one game and mash them with pieces from other games that we see work, and then put your own spin on it that fits the world you're creating.

I'd love to see the crafting system be really expanded upon. I haven't seen what Ashes currently has to offer on that front, but I've been waiting for a game that sets you apart as a crafter as much as certain players find ways to set themselves apart in the PvP crowd, or like how you made a name for yourself when people began to know you for being able to clear difficult raids. Crafting requires so many additional hours to get anywhere and you're typically still doing all the content non-crafters do. It sucks when you grind your weaponsmithing up to 100 spending hundreds of hours doing so, but then you can just kill this one boss that drops the Omega Super-Special-Awesome Sword of Godslaying that's better than anything a crafter could ever make. Time wasted.

  3. 1. Don't really have a favorite gear system.
    2. I like the concept behind the ESO system. It has same vibe as the augment system, having many different combos to avoid Metas and fine tune your playtime.
    3. Can we chat about the Freehold system sometime? If there is enough info about it.

  4. Good video man. Great topic. Gearing for me, and this is coming from my many years of playing this genre, is all about the chase. I think ESO is fine. But for whatever reason I always find myself getting bored. For me when a new expansion launches its all about that power progression. I wanna feel my character getting stronger. I love to see bigger and better stats on weapons and armor. And with ESO being stuck at a 160cp cap I guess I never feel like I've progressed. I just obtained some new perks. Progressing through an expansions story and zone without leveling up my character just never hooks me and the minor power boost I get from some added CPs doesn't hit the spot. And like you said it does suck to throw away the badass gear you worked your butt off for but its always so fun to chase down that next set. I love Ashes plan to keep lower level areas relevant but I personally think having new gear tiers to pursue is the way to go.

  5. I couldn't care less about my gearscore. What I need is the ability to change the color of everything that I'm wearing. Weapons included.

This should include the ability to change the skin of anything as long as I've earned it and it matches weight or weapon type.

In all seriousness though, As for gearing, I do really like the sound of the eso system. I never played past the first couple months of launch. So I have no experience with it in practice. But the idea of having content no matter how old still be viable because there may be a "set bonus" you really want to go after.

That sounds like a really great design philosophy. Chasing after your BiS not for specific gear items but rather bonuses that you keep forever and can mix and match with your gear to fit a playstyle. Definitely leans in on the philosophy Steven tends to want in ashes. Let us hope they move in this direction. It opens up the world and gameplay and frees the player and developers from the problems that expansions always bring.

  6. I thought deconstruction was already planned, not just before an expansion.

And I do understand set bonuses for a desired focus but how will over-enchantment work needing a new piece every patch. Are you saying you not only have to grind for new armor every patch but then have to collect new legendary materials too and then hope the gods are with you to get back to where you were?

Their system is great and unique but just wonder how enchantment will work?
