So the cosmetic packs are pretty much manditory to keep this project funded safely. This much is clear. However the way intrepid present these cosmetics each month is definitely doing a number on their reputation.
In today’s video we talk about the impact their long term fomo plans will have on the funding of this MMO and how fomo has affected their reputation to the masses outside out little circle of hopium.

As someone that actually play with Steven in Archeage for almost 2 years in his guild TheWhiteOrder(TWO) i can say Steven(Sorceror) is among the biggest whaller in Kyros server for awhile, and He even said in TS that P2W actually kill the fun for him but did it since its his job to make his guild the top guild in the server and his Faction the best out of the two faction(He buy alot of Weapon and Armor and loan it to members or Give it as a price at a cost of Guild point(Self made Guild system created by steven and his friends)). So If steven wants this his game to be long lasting and fun the P2W point will never happen on AoC. The only problem i can see is how is he going to play the game since he does have an ego of needing to be the best, will he make a secret character and play with some perks or will he just use his GM account and make an "event: and destroy everyone to satisfied his ego from time to time? But all i can say is I have been dying to play AoC since steven send a Mass email to all TWO member about this game, since the years in AA as TWO member playing with slurpy, sorceror, commander, blackbeard, John(steven's better half) and other TWO member and under a well organized guild with activities, department and PVP/RAIDS was the best experience of MMO i had in a long while
I don’t think the monthly cosmetic is or will be FOMO cosmetic or say I hope it won’t, because it can easily transfer to in game obtainable gear that need you really put your time in the game to get it like region reputation gear or religion gear or really rare world drop item or monster coin event loot etc with some changes and keep the fund pack buyers won’t mind it IF the game is good.
Could not give less shits and or fucks about cosmetics. Let them sell them as the same prices as SC if it allows them to make a non-p2w owpvp mmo in this day and age
Transmog/visual progression is such a huge vital part of an MMOrpg that i think its wierd steven and ashes goes so hard on that aspect.. the fact that they are assets ingame doesnt really matter imo, its still bought and not earned. I remember they had some kings and queens cosmetics pretty early and i just grue the moment i see those kings and queens ingame early lvl
Lol, The game isn't even out yet, Just imagine what they'll be doing once it actually is.
I think the cosmetic store and sub fee are fine considering there are no box fees. How ever I would rather have a box fee and sub, but can't expect everything exactly how I want it. Hopefully they stay true to the store items not over shadowing the in game items.
How can Intrepid/Steven proclaim that they respect the MMO player while also adopting anti consumer business/monetization practices…That's the biggest issue I have with the FOMO packs in a "already fully funded project". How can they expect to maintain a good public image while also displaying major levels of hypocrisy, while also appearing to ignore the concerns…Which I personally can't stand. I brought this issue up before the start of the year making the suggestion it was a possible time to end the practice…most comments agreed, but I can tell you there are some invested stans in there who felt like it was an individual attack on their own 'investment into the game to benefit all the other players' self validating indulgent ego stroked position. I kick started the project and yes i even purchased 1 of the early dwarf runic set individual items during the combat (quick time auto attack) rework and felt like Intrepid were making positive community feedback inspired changes….but I did not think these FOMO packs would still be a thing after 2-3 years…It's hard to recommend a "subscription is the main income feed" initiative when the 'cosmetics' are continually being spruiked using anticonsumer practices.
I think FOMO is great. Without it, you wouldn't have 30% of your content.
If anyone actually has a legit fear of missing out on cosmetics in a game that will be full of them both in the store, and in-game…and none of it will be pay to win then that's not on Intrepid its on you. There is nothing wrong with giving players options. If someone can't control themself and is buying Intrepid cosmetics over food or other necessities than they seriously should seek help. I've never seen a company handle their store and cosmetics in general to the same player friendly degree that Intrepid has and yet people still whine. I want to play this game as much as anyone and I could care less if I miss out on any of the cosmetics. The only thing I'm sad I missed out on was a chance to grab a lifetime subscription…that, unlike one out of a billion cosmetics is something of real value.
Isn't the whole point to have it be exclusive so u have something no one else does? When warframe was in development, backers of the game who purchased a founders pack got special items that no one else can get anymore. I always thought stuff like that was really cool. I feel like they try hard as fuck to keep reminding people not to purchase unless you're supporting the game and it just gets ignored. Maybe they should just have all the cosmetics available all the time, but people will still call it a scam mmo with a cash shop so who knows.
Fomo cosmetics need to go. There's no need or place for them. Cash Shops are trash as well 😎😎😎

it is fully funded, but please pay us to create ingame stuff. I see the positive sides of the packs, but also the negative. one would be, are you ever be able to use it. if you don't get the right to Skinable object. mabe not.
La mejor parte es ver a CUMPUSSYY.Uno se da cuenta de lo locon que es el fandom real.
The dragonflight video has more likes than dislike if you really want to see something take a look at 9.1 release video insanely more dislikes than likes
Cosmetic fomo is not fomo, simple as that. This argument is always had in the ffxiv community, and the final statement is always "but what if I wanna look like xyz in a year!" The answer is ya fuckin won't, okay? Rocket league rotates through hundreds of cosmetics, and 99.999% of it is never used. Ever. The same hundred combinations worn by pros and youtubers and trade fixers is worn by the rest of the community and that's it.
Stop giving a shit about parts of the game you don't even plan to interact with. You'll buy the shit you like, ignore the shit you don't, just like you've always done and always will do. The only reason you're not ignoring it now is because you're bored, not because you're passionate.
Fomo can fuck right off, respectfully. I'd like to not see this in the game after launch, why not just have a cosmetic store that rotates every month or so so the product eventually comes back around. Baiting players to have to play your game with products that wont ever come back around sounds toxic to me. I prefer a much more organic reason to play my MMO. No amount of dailies/fomo packs will strong arm me into playing a game.
They gotta stop going about this the way they are.
Show them as the design progress they are each month in streams instead of "Heres This months Cosmetic pack". They can keep selling them I guess but the way they go about it kills their rep amongst the masses peeking in.

Prefer subscription games because every cosmetic is already in the game that you pay monthly for. Back in my day… a unique cosmetic was something you where rewarded, due to playing the game for X amount of years now however they wanna sell you the game, sell you the cosmetics, sell you expansions, join our VIP club Yada Yada.
Just let us pay sub….We all adults now we dont need mums credit card any more =P
I personally don't care about cosmetics I don't buy them I don't feel FOMO about missing out on them. So bare than in mind when I say I don't mind them using that tactic proving they-
A. Don't renege and make sure the content is exclusive
B. Are up front about what these assets are.
At the end of the day its a business and a consumer is choosing to buy a product FOMO is a valid tactic or adding value (perceived or otherwise) to a product. If you feel aggrieved by this, don't buy the product
If you feel further transparency is required about exactly what you are getting then that's totally reasonable and perhaps a disclaimer should be on the store (I've not checked if this is the case or not so if it is that's my bad)
why would there not be cosmetics though?
If the game is not free to play, then there is NO need for any type of shop. While I can ignore it, it definitely leaves a shit taste in your mouth.
I've NEVER had a problem with studio creating cosmetic items for sale in their game. Not ever – every company exists to make money. For me, this means that the more money they get the more the chance is that the game will last longer and be better to play. I know this is a risk I take, but hey, I play games for FUN and I go to the movies for FUN, both require payments of some kind! Get real everyone …
The only time I draw the line is when the shop changes to Pay To Win! As soon as that happens, I'm gone!
I believe AOC when they say they will never go PTW. I remember playing with them in ArcheAge and it was true.
Love your show!
Imagine buying cosmetics on a game that won't be out for several more years at the very least, if at all.
there is an extension for chromium based browsers that allows you to see dislike count
Well, as long as the game launches without a ton of bugs and glitches and works as intended and offers good and a lot of content, ashes should have no problem staying alive with subscription only. I dont give a crap about this pre launch sold cosmetics. The only thing I care about is, that the world of ashes manages to keep me engaged by offering me interessting stuff to do, and that I can play my character in an meaningful way. What i mean by that is, that whatever choice I make, how I want to proceed with my character, Classchoise, gear, weapons, augments and so on, that I can build myself a character, that has a place in this world. Lets hope, they get the classsystem/combatsystem and the ballanceing right.
I consider myself a former hardcore/professional pvp mmorp player, but now I am getting kinda old and tired of the genre. Still, some of my mentality and passion resides inside me and never really went away. I hope, ashes manages to make me want to play the game and keep playing it. After all the same kind of stuff killed my passion for mmos the same way it went for steve, (shareing the same name as him xD). P2W, P4C and poorly implemented systems. I played, Rappelz, Guild Wars 2, Archeage, TESO, BDO to name a few. GW2 i wouldnt consider P2W, but it felt so repedetive, even tho I consider it to be a very good mmo. The others, well,… You allready can imagein the story.
When I first heard about ashes, I was hyped and pumped. The video of peon really sold it to me, but my hype for any sort of games is on a low point at the moment. Maybe because I feel like, there are no good games out there,… only a few and it demotivates to see how stagnant and boring most of the games that launched in the last 10 years where. I hope Steve gets it right and launches a polished and finished product, because if ashes fails or it is just another mmo, I might find myself another hobby entirely instead of gameing in general. I wish interpid studios the best of luck and hope they can impress us with an mmo that gives us new and cool stuff to do.
I would even go so far…. And say, an mmo with the same amount of features/game systems, that feels not only compleet, but exceeds our expactation and sets a new milestone in the mmo genre, I would be perfectly fine by 50$/month subscription. Thats something worth to me, considering how much money went into this garbage p2w mmos. Just please cut out this stupid cash shop bs and deliver an experiance, sinking 1000ends of hours in worth. With that said, have a nice day all you guys.
I'm sorry. I'm having a tough time considering a pre-order Alpha/Beta key packs with "unique" cosmetics that change monthly as "FOMO".
You buy one pack, it costs $75 – $375.
Let's see what happens upon release.
Besides, people seem to like this stuff. Fortnite, GTAV each make billions.
I'm still hoping for NFT's, Play2Earn, and Loot-Boxes!!! Those are fun mechanics!!!
If they changed the advertising and let people know that they're funding extra in game assets instead of just the cosmetics, and then added the cosmetic items as rare drops too from the mobs in the zones those items exist in, I wonder who all would actually be upset. It's not like Ashes needs the funding in the first place thanks to Steven.
For me personally, it took years for me to break out of getting caught up in fomo bullshit. Although we both know that the alpha one packs are sort of different from the norm, it would be great if all those cosmetics could be legit acquired in-game on launch day, or even as special event items Idk. But money-gating outside of the initial sub shouldn't really be a thing ever.
Also, congrats on being able to be competitive on BDO as a ftp player, as a fellow ftp account I can imagine how much rage you had on a regular basis playing that piece of shit.
i dont think the gw2 and eso communities are comparable to the bdo community. I just dont think most players in gw2 or eso would give bdo the time of day. Pvpers from gw2 and eso? sure i know some who play both. I play all 3. But most people in eso and gw2 arent pvpers. I know some people play bdo to life skill, breed horses, go for dream horses, etc, but i dont think thats at all comparable to the amount of people only doing pve activities in gw2 and eso. But i do think ashes could get a lot of players from all 3 games if they have good pve and half decent balance.
I guess what im getting at is that bdo is a very niche mmo. I dont really think gw2 and eso are very niche. Different in some ways sure, but similar in others to wow and ff14. I think the only niche thing about eso and gw2 is the combat if anything. Especially eso, since people love to say it has bad combat when theyve only played for 2 months and are still running around in first person light attacking everything. But combat is very different in gw2 and eso compared to games like ff14 and wow. I think some people prefer it one way, and some people another way. Personally i like high apm, faster paced combat but also play wow and think its great. But some people hate it one way or the other.
Counter question: If the project is funded through release, as stated by the Steven, why do they need FOMO income during development ? They should of held the armor/weapons/mounts until the release of the game, if they really want to convince jaded people (aka people that funded and were scammed by CoE) that this project is not another cash grab. Do I think AoC is a cash grab, no… but it is hard to see how on one hand they are "funded" and on the other they continue to push pre-release items monthly. As for the MMO is a business argument I counter that this is frankly a passion project (yes a large one) for Steven and not a straight business like FFXIV/WoW/GW2/etc.
Sir, I don't like fanboys. I've been banned as a kickstarter. I hope it works. I see a launch and then a dead within a year. Expansion? No room for old school long range players that are casual? There you have it. 4K at 120 fps is the first block for PVP. Best of luck. Skaff.
In a way, I like FOMO, when you're actually missing out if you don't get the item or achievement in question. But this feeling is exclusively towards in-game things with no real-life currency involved. It's essentially bragging rights, and I believe that is a massive pillar in a very social game like an MMORPG. If I had it my way I would immediately halt any further additions to the shop and instead add a subscription fee along with the box cost. He could consult the community, maybe through a poll, about which they would rather prefer. I know Steven has stated multiple times that they have all the funding they need to DEVELOP the game, if the box cost isn't enough to MAINTAIN the game then be upfront about it instead of using tactics like these. Personally I think the community would rather have it that way. This would also be better for Steven as it's a more stable and predictable source of income.
Sure, populations will be lower but I think the better the quality is of the game, funding being a huge aspect, the more loyal the playerbase will be.
Lies…..
I was going to give some money to AoC, but then I ran into the FOMO support system. Then I decided that Steven didn't want my money.
This is why people love From Software, that's another reason why the Souls games are so successful… I know this is different because it's an MMO but even games like WoW on it's peak didn't have that bullshit in it…
If they're already dipping into FOMO before release, they're going to be digging deeply into FOMO gameplay as well (along with engagement mechanics like dailies). And the thing about engagement mechanics is that they exhaust players, keep them around longer, and them staying longer with that exhausted mindset leaves their most recent memory of grumpiness as their strongest of the game.
IMO I think a huge reason why players remember old MMOs as so much better of a game is that they left the game on better terms. When quitting when they figured they were done, rather than quitting when they got angry enough at an engagement mechanic.
I will buy the game and get a sub. But please keep real money out of the game. Armour is such a huge thing in an mmo. I'm not totally against transmog but I really think it should all be earned in game.
Look at games like elden ring that a re praised by everyone for keeping micro transactions out of their game. Getting weapons and armour is a status symbol in an mmo and having people buy their way to the top sucks ass.
all the discussion of cosmetics are so funny to me, the echo chamber seems to be ringing loudly. The larger community don't care at the end of the day it's just some cosmetics, don't buy them
A better option instead of cash shops in my opinion is for them to sell actually good irl merch that comes with redeemable codes (no rng bullshit like cards, but more like figurines and game clothes like making your guild tabard into a shirt)
or the usual collab with stupid shit like Chipotle and you get an emote where you throw burritos or some shit…
That way they could get away with saying "This is the first MMO to not have a cash shop in the last two decades"
And if they keep the irl merch updated with cool shit and give it good marketing it could be huge
Actually i am hoping on playing ashes and morning else Forever.
So no pressure
Only thing i would like to see in game, to make up the fact of selling cosmetic. Is a way to farm for those same cosmetic in game. Reputation, materials, money anything like this with a relation of time to grind vs price. Example a ratio off 5$ cosmetic = to 50h grind roughly, can make you obtain cosmetic by yourself or buy it if you don't have the time or don't want to grind them.
I am one who believes some exlusivity is good. These packages are for whales or for those who can spare the money. You get awesome cosmetics for supporting the game out of your own desire. Steven already said do not buy the packages if you are unsure because there will be equal if not better ones in game that you have to grind for. I respect everyones opinion in comments but I believe making these cosmetics available to everyone as a terrible idea. It defeats purpose of packages and removes that aweome feeling of having something no one else has. Clout is important in games and allowing everyone to obtain what would be considered "rare" after the release of game is not a good desiion and will porbably cause more backlash due to those who have already purchased packs. Anyways great vid 🙂
