So Intrepid Studios is bringing a ton of amazing features to Ashes of Creation. The Node System allows players to shape the world, there is an open world flagging system with a griefing protection system (Corruption) built in, there are meaningful PvP Themes (Wars and Sieges) and there is a robust Artisan System. The game basically has something for everyone. Oddly enough one of those “things” for everyone is the In Game Voice Chat. Now, for me, I’m never going to use it, but people are stoked for this and they keep asking for proximity chat. In this video I share some information about the in-game voice options, as well as why I don’t think proximity chat is a good thing. I don’t want to dismiss the hype of the people who are happy about in-game voice chat, so let’s hear from everyone in the comment section.

  1. I am not a fan of in game voice chat. The various games I have player with in game voice chat almost always has some toxic member. An example that jumps to mind is Archeage. Players have the ability to craft music and play it so every one can hear. Most the time this is great. Unfortunately you get the one player that plays one high pitch note for a long time. This really hurts the ear. Another example is the various combat games like Mechwarrior online. The elitist's use voice chat and then verbally harangue other players because they are not doing what they want. If I can not turn off the voice chat I do not play the game.

  2. Your proximity chat example/illustration represented my personal experience in New World very accurately. I’d be happy without open-world proximity chat.

I’d feel more comfortable using in-game voice chat within guilds, raids, and taverns than using Discord. Surely I’m an outlier. But that is my preference. With that said, I’ll probably end up using Discord anyways since almost everyone else uses it.

  3. I honestly use both mainly my discord to chat with my friends. I have Discord hotkeyed to mute myself then I'll reply to the player in game and have made friends doing so. That being said if they don't have it its not the end of the world and I can see the appeal to limit some of the toxicity.

  4. No, just no to proximity voice chat even for RP reasons in MMORPG . Discord , Teamspeak exist. Have zone chats etc. i remmber when beeing newbie and i see someone next to me i would just whisper and ask them if they know anything about my issue whit some task. But having random people screeeeeeechhhhing and make my ears bleed randomly is a big no no for me.

  5. I'm terrible at explaining things and English isn't my first language so bear with me.

I agree with the immersion breaking point.. i didn't find too many using voip in new world but when i did, it was short and funny most of the time BUT extremely immersion breaking. No matter what someone says, even if they're RPing, hearing some dudes voice through their 12$ walmart mic is pretty fucking immersion breaking.

I think it would be cool if some places had voip so that people who do want to talk to strangers and meet/talk to people ingame have a place to go to. Player owned housing for example, allow the player who owns it to either enable or disable voip in their home.. so that they can CHOOSE + it isnt a place where 100 people will be at once unless its a goldshire gangbang.
TL;DR: Open world proximity chat? No. The option to allow voice chat in your POH? Yes.

  6. I honestly use when playing games like Arma, Dayz, and Escape from Tarkov. Its honestly awesome to be able to meet players in the open world and just start up a conversation with them through proximity chat without having to go through the formality of inviting them to a party first.
However, there’s going go be a lot of people inside nodes and other hotspots and that can get toxic very easily, so there has to be an easy prox chat on/off switch. Or just make it automatic when entering a node like exiting a tavern.
I would like to see general proximity chat tested in alpha 2 or the betas just to see how it would play out in low and high population areas.

  7. I will 100% use in game guild chat, it's useful when you're in discord or TeamSpeak and need to say something to someone that isn't on Discord/TeamSpeak or when you want to message an other channel but can't be bother to set up whispers (whispers aren't available on discord)
I personally love proximity chat and hope they would add it.
I find that it's really popular amongst people of my age, it seems older people seem to dislike it but no one could deny how useful it is.
being able to just push a button and communicate quickly with the person attacking me saying that I'm friendly or that I'll share a portion of my items if they were to leave me be.
As for your point regarding people getting bothered by being ignored, I strongly disagree, I played NW which featured a proximity chat and had really good experiences with it, when people seemed to ignored me, I just wrote a message in local chat in case they didn't hear me, it is not a hard thing to do in a calm environment but it is harder to write while fighting.
I feel like they should at least include a basic or place holder voice chat system for the ones they promised at least, or at worse release it a few months after release.

  8. There are pros & cons to proximity chat. I've been playing MMOs for 16 years and I do think it will add to the player driven moments, the highs and lows of it, the good and the bad. We have countless moments of pure joy or rage, conflict or pride all recorded and they are looked back on. I think having options to mute people easily is important tho, some people are, not great. Still tho, all be interesting to see how it unfolds in Ashes. Being able to have a few drinks & play tavern games sounds pretty epic and is something my mates & I do once a month over discord.

  9. It will definitely uptake meaningful interactions to a brand new level, however something like local chat was always a text only good. But then again frustrating raids can lead to some really bad voice chat between random people when looking for a group for a dungeon

  10. 2:30 I would have to disagree with your point about we shouldnt have proximity chat because it will just be underutilized by players and here's my reason why:

    1. It would be easy to solve the problem that you mentioned on your example (Person 2 on discord didnt know that Person 1 is talking) by having a small gray icon beside the player's name that would turn RED whenever they're talking to their mic. And we could also have an icon of a mic with an X in it to indicate that Person 2 is not currently using the in-game proxi chat.

    2. IF AND ONLY IF Intrepid will go all in on the proximity chat functionality, the players will realize that using in-game proxi chat will be a lot convenient and seamless to use. These functionality could include: (1)Option to open your mic to Everyone/Party/Raid/Guild/Citizens/Religion or any combination of those options. (2) Ability to Blacklist someone (or basically mute them indefinitely) (3) Ability to open your mic on just certain individuals.

You might notice that all of these are basically Discord. But that's exactly my point, if Intrepid gave the players a robust In-game voice chat system, It would be a lot convenient/seamless for them to use the in-game voice chat rather than have a 3rd party software to do it.
