Ashes of Creation – Karma Bombing

The concern of Karma Bombing came up in the Ashes of Creation community a few weeks ago. Several people had some serious concerns about how Karma bombing will happen. I never want to be dismissive of people’s concerns, but a lot of those concerns were based on things that simply cannot happen. Hopefully this video quells the concerns that people have or enlightened them to the facts they weren’t aware of.

Now, with that said, if you still have concerns about Karma Bombing, I 100% want you to list them in the comments below. Let us leave no stone unturned when dealing with possible issues with Ashes of Creation.

  1. In bdo karma bombing was usually when someone would come in your farm zone and fudge the mob rotation , forcing you to kill him to get out of your zone. Then he would repeat that until you left the farm zone or had a ton of karma. It forced you to concede the farm zone because he was abusing his protection. This was possible because your respawn was very close to the farm zone, and your penalty for death was lower than the guy making the karma.
Another way to karma bomb was in Lineage 2. As a thief/rogue you could fake death/inviz ( it would break monster agro on you ). So in order to force people of the zone , you would gather mobs from the zone ( far 2 many to survive ) and use the agro break skill near the guy you want dead. At that point your only solution was to kill the rogue before he did that ( forced karma at that point ) or leave the farm zone.
When people complain about karma I imagine usually these type of scenarios worry them.

Keep up the good work J.

  2. I agree that in order to attack someone, even if that someone has a red name(karma) you still need to flag.
I don't think the game should punish the killer to much or you will scare away those that like to PK others but then again to much PK without any consequences will scare away those doing their pve stuff without bothering with other that much.

So maybe the karma guy, when being attacked by a flagged player, could possible lose some karma points?

I don't know how all of this will run. Think we will be overwhelmed with controllers and mechanics

When I used to player Lineage2 I don't recall having AOEs but the karma worked as Steven is saying, after all the system is taken from that game. You had to press ctrl + the skills to force attack a player. As someone already said here the only griefing mechanic I can recall is the "fake death" skill when the rogue lured all the mobs into you and he used that skill in order to get you killed, forcing you to either move away or kill the player but then again that isn't the karma bombing stuff people are talking that is just exploiting a mechanic imo.

On Archeage once you flag all your skills would hit greens/purple no matter what cuz that is after all a skill be it aoe or not. Ctrl+f is what enables you to attack other players. Here the scenario of farming mobs and a green gets close and gets hit by the aoe is true.

Overall the only problem here is the Karma guy not able to fight back others cuz they aren't flagged when they attack him. Somehow that is understandable but then again he still decided to kill another player. Only way to counter Karma is by farming exp/mobs(that was lineage 2 way).

The only problem I have with this system is that you can get killed by a group of players (one gets karma) and their friends will kill him and get his items which means there is 0 consequences killing someone(in this scenario). The only solution I see for this problem is that a percentage of the items dropped go to the world eater, they vanish just like when a town/city is destroyed and a percentage of the stuff on the bank vanishes.

Unfortunately I can't watch your stream cuz EU time
Thanks for your summary and hope to see your points of view when alpha 1 pre-test 3 no NDA comes next month 😉

  3. Lineage2 was great. J i hadn't heard a clip from Steven where he states people that aren't signed up for a seiege cannot participate. Can you link that please? I'm aware they can't scribe for the castle or benefit from respawn points but the way I understood it was anyone could show up and play. Players with in the seige grounds are automatically flagged for pvp. And when I say flagged I don't mean purple. I mean death penalties fall under the non flagged pvp umbrella. Your neither defender or attacker. Anyone can attack you.

  4. Playing the karma/pk system is a part of every game. Like with many other things we will have to wait and see what they do, but at the end people will complain no matter what.
I personally hope that dying hurts like hell for everyone, even innocent bystanders. But I am a terminally ill pk/pvp junkie who feeds on hate and don't mind losing levels and stuff as long as I poke the other guy in the eye too ^^U.

  5. Sounds like all that we need to do is have all party members flag and attack a green and then let one designated person kill them. Since we don't get corruption for attacking; only for killing.
Even if the corruption is distributed all we need to do is freeze the target let the person who is designated to kill start attacking and have everyone else move outside of the battle zone. Problem solved regardless. If people decide to attack our party member who is corrupted then the entire party attacks them for flagging. Got to love loopholes!!! (please note sarcasm…)

  6. Karma bombing has been a problem in Black Desert for a while. Im interested in seeing how they deal with this since their decision could influence other games as well

  7. I'm in the camp that believes for sure you should get flagged as a legal combatant if you're green and you attack a red. Because you can't claim to be a non-combatant when clearly you're standing their swinging a sword. Reds should have a chance to fight back against everyone who attacks them without digging themselves even deeper in the karma hole.
