MMO in development Ashes Of Creation recently showcased their freeholds. An awesome stream where viewers learned a lot. However a lot of drama, strong opinions, and divisiveness has been the result. I decided to observe community interactions for a couple of days. Creative Director answered a lot of questions via discord. Freeholds and housing is shaping up to be quite amazing, but some members of the community are worried about them being too exclusive. Is this truly a problem however?

People are so addicted to drama! The game is years away from release, but everyone is already an expert on how the game play will work even though no one has the bigger picture yet. It's a bid embarrassing really. I get that everyone has opinions, but it's always just comparing it to other mmo's that suck and past experiences and are nothing like AOC at all. There is time for these more serious discussion once we actually play it. I also don't understand why people assume that everyone single account on a server WANTS a freehold. There are so many different game play loops in this game and a lot of people i am pretty sure don't want to spend time on a freehold. Like all the pirates for example….Or the ones who just want to do raids or whatever… You get my point. I don't think there is way to actually test if there will be an issue before beta testing. Every game loop and system has to be finished first. There! Another useless opinion for a game that doesn't exist! lol
What if the bidding system was that (for example) you need 1K gold to get a ticket and then a lottery determines who randomly gets a plot? Then it can't be controlled by large guilds on who has the most gold.
Not every player will be able to own a freehold but every mid tier guild and higher should easily be able to own a few between their members. As long as you coordinate with your guild you should have access to all crafting stations and farms.
If your guild is just you and your 3 closest friends you might not be able to pool enough resources to buy one but freehold will be far from the only feature you'll miss out on with such a small guild
Coming in to say that's a nice ass thumbnail. Well done, sir.
6 minis the take. 100% its been the same for YEARS! NO. PARTICIPATION. TROPHIES.
we can't really tell yet if this system is good or not cause the PVP side of the game haven't been discussed yet, i recall Steven himself said that players may need to empty their house before a Guild war is declared, cause there will be a risk of losing it along with your belongings, so if there is really a chance that you might lose your freehold cause of PVP, then i agree with those conditions, however if the owners are gonna get a hold of it forever with no risk, at this point they should consider an option for making it available for all the players, casual and hardcore,
other than that constructive feedback from players can only be done correctly after testing and playing the game
Lmao “eRP brothel” was funny as hell
if theres more than 2 or 3 servers, the game will die like NEW WORLD. Spreading player base to thin.
It looks like sh*t
My questions is about this exclusivity. See Im def fine with never being able to own a cool freehold in game. Most likely it will eventually be impossible to get one without being someone popular in the space. Which is whatever. What im not ok with is the fact they are spending all this time on systems in the game that no one else will get to experience? Im hoping thats not the case and we can still make these farms and things in our own instanced world. To add, their philosophy on who will own freeholds and being a mayor is also very strange to me. Taking into consideration how most mmos go nowadays, there is no way that eventually, owning a freehold or having some exclusive right to something in game will not be P2W and monetized from outside sources. I would love to be proven wrong, but I dont see that happening. maybe someone can make a case for why that cant ever happen.
The problem with the current freeholds isn't their rarity but that they tied to almost all the artisan processing classes and a good chunk of the crafting as well. This could be fixed by adding more processing buildings to nodes such as town stables that all players can use. Artisan classes should not be gated content by freehold ownership. It does not make sense that to be a dirt farmer you have to be the most wealthy, powerful, and connected player. I understand them not wanting to clutter the world with freeholds but freeholds should not be a gate that cuts off the playerbase from artisan classes. If you want to have the best processing and crafting buildings on freeholds I'm cool with that but there should be public processing buildings in nodes so all players can partake in the artisan classes. Oh, and six stalks of corn is not going to cut it for being a farmer using a node home. AoC might want to consider adding instanced freeholds where players can use like a crack in a mountain or a hole in a ground to access a small instanced area in the Underrealm where they can have a small freehold to pursue artisan skills. However, I'd make these instanced freeholds have less space and unfortunately a inn or tavern would be pointless since no one can walk by and see them. Not too keen on the bidding system either. You are going to get large guilds who buy up the freeholds by using their members who they can simply give funds to. These members might not even be using the freehold but are simply squatting on it so the guild can sell it at a thousand times the markup cost.
I really like the rep idea to own a freehold, really smart, i see myself grinding the fuck off a node to own a freehold, by bidding u can already see big guilds buying most freeholds, and getting way ahead of the curve by exploiting this method, hoping steven sees this Reputation idea to own a node (:
Who cares ab these housing mains we can just rob their caravans anyways and have other housing guilds pay us to beat them up 🤣
this is the same system albion uses for its shops. it works well
thats it?!?!? xD a Digital pig got killed? holy fuck do you know how many pigs i killed in wow????? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA?!?!?!?!
if someone charges too much nobody will use them and go to the cheaper freehold. its litteraly a open market xD
stop bitching
I think the limited amount of freeholds is over blown.
Server size is 8-10k
Freeholds are in the low thousands (1-3k)
So thats rough 25% of the population owning a freehold at average (10%-37.5%)
Now consider family size is 8-9 people.
So that means pretty much everyone can experience a freehold by at least knowing a friend that has one. If you are dedicated you can probably get one.
Also consider that in-node static housing may have similar functions. A percentage of the population may prefer them.
Finally consider that only a percentage of the population will be progressed enough (or cares enough) to own a freehold.
Basically I think there will be enough out there that if owning a freehold makes or breaks the game for you, you'll be able to get one. It might not be in the spot you want but you'll be able to find one.
One thing that should be consider (it may be and I'm unaware of it) is a way to lose freehold ownership if you are not playing for an extended period of time. That way really old servers aren't full of freeholds of inactive players.
I'm not expecting for this game to be any good, from what I've seen on dev streams, combat(which is the most important thing in any MMORPG) looked like total wow-like trash, while other gameplay didn't look too interesting and nothing really original. It almost looks like they are trying to make a somewhat different wow clone, which is very disappointing.
If every player cant have their own free hold, I probably wont play the game. I am older, and dont have a bunch of online friends to play with. And I have tried to join guilds and groups for Day Z and and others, and its not easy to get accepted into a clique. Its so lame only a group of no lifes will get the holds.
I'm not sure how intrepid can do it but I think somehow they need to limit the number of freeholds any one guild can hold collectively. And while I love the direction of ashes of creation. I do understand the concern someone who has spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars on cosmetics for something they may never get to use. Intrepid is going to have to figure out a way to make these cosmetics usable in some capacity or they will have a lot of unhappy early adopters.
Haha this is not a casual game
Players are so used to be spoon fed in MMOs, i don't want that, i want a hard game, where i have a risk to lose it all. I plan to be owner of a freehold and i don't expect it to be easy, but i expect it to be possible and i have already a plan on how to do it. I love politics in games.
Corporatist guilds and land barons will be the only ones who will get their hands on freeholds. They're going to make the same mistake that FF14 and New World did: locking away a massively popular portion of content from 95% of the player base is not a good thing. It killed New World.
Steven and Intrepid have said from the beginning. The game will be casual friendly. That doesn't mean casual players will get everything. But that guilds will need casual players to succeed as well.
As a casual person you will not be assigned the thoughest challenge in a guild, but the easier one that will still be needed. It's about being part of a larger entity
