The real question is, how often are they going to make our current gear obsolete?
As Luto said, in FFXI it was absolutely worth the time investment to build a +3 HQ item, because it was useful for years.
In FFXIV 1.0 when you failed an overmeld, you lost everything including the item. in FFXIV currently, you only lose your current materia.
Ashes will probably use a hybrid system where when you fail you lose the current mats, and the base item takes damage which must be repaired before you can attempt another over-enchant.
