So Ashes Of Creation’s Alpha 2 Phase 1 has recently released and I finally had the chance to play the game again 3 years after the Alpha 1.

In that time Ashes has had multiple NDA tests but I haven’t attended any of them despite having access because they usually take place when I’m sleeping and I wanted to be able to give a genuine first impressions to the devs for when the NDA drops so that’s exactly what this video is.
A genuine first impression from someone who wants Ashes of Creation to succeed.
This game is obviously in an Alpha state and the devs have said multiple times that this specific phase isn’t really something people should buy into to play, but instead to test.
The following footage is from the second weekend of Alpha 2 phase 1 testing as my internet was down for the first weekend.

What do you think of the latest Ashes Of Creation now that Alpha 2 Phase 1 is here and there’s no NDA? are you optimistic for the future of this MMORPG? do you like the combat? let me know in the comments below!

Ashes Of Creation MMO Description

Ashes Of Creation is a colossal MMORPG attempting to provide fans of PVP, PVE and Roleplay an everchanging world and the ultimate MMO experience, the game will have the following:

9 different playable races both with male and female options.
1200 square kilometer world size at launch, 85 Nodes in the world, EVERY Resource you see is gatherable just like in New World.
Fully open world game where you can go from one size of the map to the other no loading screens.
Dungeons, Raids, World Bosses, Open World PVP with a criminal system, Caravan PVP, castle sieges, node sieges, arenas, duels, guild wars, crafting and artisan system, monster coin events, political system, citizenship, player run shops, taverns with parlor games, top tier character customization, transmog cosmetic collection, 64 different class combinations, 3 different forms of player housing both open world and instanced, achievements, leaderboards, gathering, questing, hybrid combat system, player driven economy with localized storage, pets, massive guild system with guild halls, both land and water mounts and 18 different biomes in the world.

Ashes started development back in 2016 in Unreal Engine 4 however at the end of 2021 upgraded its engine to Unreal 5 to make use of the latest advancements in gaming tech such as nanite, lumen and a more efficient development pipeline, In terms of funding the game was successfully kickstarted in 2017 however the vast majority of the games funding comes from creative director Steven Sharif, a successful entrepreneur who like most of us has been a lifelong MMO fan that was unhappy with the current state of the MMORPG genre, Ashes Of Creation is fully funded to completion and despite offering paid access to Alpha and Beta tests is not reliant on these funds to finish development.

This game will have zero pay to win, a cosmetic only cash shop with no convenience items and a $15 per month subscription fee business model with no box cost.

A sand park MMO is basically a hybrid of theme park and sandbox, there’s a lot of player driven content however there’s also developer curated scripted encounters such as raids and dungeons…This is the category of MMO that Ashes Of Creation falls into and personally It’s my favorite type of MMORPG.

  1. Like this video should not have been made till phase 2. As someone that’s also an alpha one tester giving a new player experience on something that has placeholders purposely put. They are just to test things kind of gives the community a wrong impression right now.. that’s just my opinion as someone that’s listening to your video and can already see quite a few things that you’ve done wrong, but we’re all exploring the game together to learn it and not everyone has the same way of thinking when it comes to playing an alpha

  2. Born 87. First game that got me hooked into gaming was diablo 1. I was 9 years old and a friend brought it over to my home computer. We had the CD-key and installed it and had birthday cake. It was a brilliant experience and what caused me to get into gaming. FF to now being 37 years old "tomorrow's my b-day" and here we are with games. I am an aerospace avionics engineer, and regularly work with software engineers. Long story short… There used to be and still is test engineers. Whether it's for thermals, software, vibration, MTBD/MTBR e.t.c…. We got paid for these jobs and still do… I can not for the life of me understand why game development studios…. A.K.A SOFTWARE ENGINEERS…. are held to completely different standards "Game designers… software engineers" NOTHING HAS CHANGED…. Why tf are people paying their hard earned money to test a un-developed system. They should be paid as a test engineer a decent salary. WTF has happened in the last 10 years?!?!? How tf did you plebs allow this BS to be passed as normal? WTF is wrong with people….
    STOP…PAYING…FOR…EARLY…ACCESS…AND…NON-RELEASED…GAMES…
    STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP
These game studios haven't earned the right to develop a game.
If everyone ran around with some stupid ass idea and decided this is the next greatest thing then the whole fkn world would be a place of theory and no application… Some people deserve to fail. This is one of those companies. They are preying on the stupidity of public, and are and will continually keep promising things that can't be delivered, or at the very least will be left in dev stage. cough cough, STAR CITIZEN. Why release a game when it can be in permeant early access. I.E dev stage and suffer 0 consequences because "hey we told you it was early access". Hold these dick bags to some kind of standard for fk sakes.

  3. Backed early on. If I can't level solo, or find activities to do on my own, I will be very sad. It is not that I don't or won't group, I just don't want to be entirely dependent on others to enjoy the game.

  4. Now after having finished the video I have no clue why I should play this game over any other MMO. Right now even Brighter Shores feels more fun lol. I'm a simple man. I don't know why companies always wants to force people into groups in MMOs. I don't play MMOs for group content. I play it to fight other players. Just let me be the lonely wolf I want to roleplay. For me one of the most important aspects of an MMO is also the chat and the trading system. If those suck good bye. I wanna set up a carpet shop anywhere I want. Imagine you lay down actual items on the carpet. In my favorite old MMO I was reselling potions inside dungeons and such. Always on the lookout for good spots I also love the approach of Archeage where there is limited labor attached to anything gold. That really gives it value.

  5. combat is feeling extremely bad..idk why..
    lacks impact.
Menus are obviously pretty shit rn..
Idk wtf is that weather at the beginning but it barely shows..They should have a occasional snow storm or something to GRAB the player by the nuts..
    Water still has jello physics..
Movement has to be polished even further..

  6. I personally think the quests should be difficult, should force you to figure things out and NOT hand feed you exactly where to go or what to do, just like the old classic wow back on the day, we will never get that experience back, but this game might just do it

  7. Will be interesting to see how they take questing. Honestly the best questing experience I've ever had was playing Runescape simply because each one was meticulously designed and unique. The only other game that comes close that I've heard of is Dungeon and Dragons Online which I've yet to play but did watch the video from Josh Strife Hayes and it's decent.

I hope they've got a good quest designer so that we get a little as much Runescape, D&D Online as they can with as little "Collect 10 bear @sses" as much as possible.

Also, I like Narc's thoughts on creating a Runescape Tutorial Island for Ashes of Creation. A shared starter area that's set in the world before crossing the portal. Learn combat and skills as you please.

With the crafting questing I think they should have you talk to guards and someone like a quartermaster that asks you what you'd like to do and is able to introduce you to as much or as little crafting as you want as you can instead choose to do nothing but combat.

  8. I've casually followed the games development, and I share the concern about the XP debt on death. Because the world is so large with significant travel times, this means that there is effectively a material loss of productive time on death. This in essence translates to XP loss. That feels like double dipping XP penalties. Removing XP debt on death may also help to make the risk/reward of solo play feel more appealing.

  9. Very nice video! Personally, I like the idea of quests not giving butt loads of exp, or being hand held throughout. I like the idea of adventure, and having to look for objectives. Granted, there should be clear directions in the quest log, and precise tracking to make sure you know how far along you are, if the quest has multiple objectives. In previous old school games, when I was confused about where to go, I would ask other players. It usually led to positive social interactions, which is what I think Ashes is shooting for. Also, not a fan of QoL stuff. That's what went wrong with WoW, and other current mmo's, imo.

Always love your content, and looking forward to future videos!
