Ashes of Creation – Alpha 1 Testing Feedback [Overview]

With the Ashes of Creation Alpha 1 Testing coming to a close next week, now is the time to start talking about the things that need to be looked at closely if we want to help Intrepid Studios in their journey at making an MMORPG that blends the best of the old guard games and several new features that will give players control over the world of Verra. This video is a general overview of the testing, mainly the comparison of what was promised previously to be delivered in the 2019 alpha and what we got this month.

The good news for Intrepid is that in less than one week they will have no artificial deadlines left to fulfill. This will give them the opportunity to iterate to completion instead of trying to maintain a 4.5 on 2.5 off production cycle.

I’m going to be covering a couple of other things this week for Ashes, mainly the combat system, force grouping, and why I think Intrepid should seize the opportunity to go dark for the next 2 months and just focus on building the game.

Make sure to leave a comment for anything you want to discuss in more detail.

  1. You're right. Now is the time to give feedback, before the road is to far traveled to backtrack.
    Shame I'm not a tester.
Looking forward to this series though.

  2. Every time I see an official AoC video, they shown new mounts, really who cares about mounts when the game is still in pre-alpha stages ? They should really drop this mount bs and focus more on the game

  3. As someone who has fan Star Citizen for some years, AoC is in a fantastic place. Core tech systems, server performance, and stability are everything. At this point, Steven just needs to commit to reworking combat as many times as it takes to make it good. With as much interest and funding as AoC is attracting, the content will follow even if it takes many years to fully realize everything imagined.

  4. Hello Jahlon,
I'm very happy that i can say that i find your videos extremely interesting and explanatory in the AoC corner on YT! 🙂
I beg Intrepid, as you said "rather underpromise and over delivery", to focus on the core stuff because if they do and put all the core systems on the right spot all the potential they would like to achieve would be 90% there in my opinion.

Like in some other comments people said, that they would like to see more meat and potatoes on the updates especially at this stage.
On the other side of coin looking at it from the Intrepid point of view, they had the office stuff drastically slowing down things, pandemic stuff slowing it down tho and moving the development timeline further in irreversible way.. And that where in my opinion people are right and Intrepid wrong, just screw the cosmetics and extra stuff not needed for the game at this stage.. focus on the meat, cook properly those potatoes and add the salt and pepper at last when you can taste it..

I'm looking forward for the videos you said you're about to post and hear your opinion.
Huge like from me! top work!
    Have a great day!

  5. I'm pretty sure this game will turn into a lame ass, cash shop game. Your avatar, mount, freehold, wagon and whatever else will look basic as hell if you don't spend more money on the cash shop. I hate when subscription games makes not looking lame be at an additional cost and Ashes of Creation have MADE IT CLEAR that cosmetics will be king. They have been selling them before the god damn game is even close to release.

There is most definitely more cosmetic sets in the game than regular sets.

  6. I completely agree. I don't want a date of when X feature or system is going to be done. I want it done. I want them to do it and deliver it whenever they have it ready for either testing or it's fully functional. (I'm not a backer/tester btw). As long as they are fine financially, aka can sustain the development, they should take THEIR time. Not just take time, but their own time.

A lot of people say "oh, but if the hype train dies no one remembers and then no one cares about your game!" that is what marketing and promotion is for. Go silent for X amount of time you need to develop things properly, then when is almost ready to go out, go everywhere and start the train again. Now, you will actually have a game to showcase. Not some trailer, a full game. It's night and day. But we've been accustomed as customers and clearly a lot of companies too, by shareholders and others that there's only 1 formula for success.

    Good video btw, subbed.

  7. For me the animation type perfected depends on the character or class. These animations seem to pair with the ability types. Split body animation seems to fit a melee type with action combat skills where as a more rooted animation seems to fit a ranged class with tab targeting.

In my opinion, why force a choice between the two? Since they have recently introduced a toggle between the two for alpha testing why can't that remain going forward and let the player decide. By all means continue to work on the animations but leave it up to the players.

  8. Looking forward to more of your videos as alpha streaming will likely die down after next week. Absolutely agree with over promising – manage your audience's expectations, be transparent (they are generally good at this) and from our part just alot of patience!

  9. Not having all the classes and abilities is understandable with Jeff leaving. Not saying it excuses them, but I get it.
All in all I think that this has been a great alpha so far and I want to see Intrepid Under promise and over deliver as well.
Steven, if you manage to read my lowly comment here, You guys are doing a great job! Take your time and make the best MMO ever. <3
