Ashes 101 – When should you join a Guild? (Viewer Question)

From my https://youtu.be/puZSnY-ir1c video, one of my viewers asked me to do a video on Guilds and how to pick guilds. I was happy to do this. I actually covered it on my Twitch show; however, I wasn’t happy with the way that segment piece worked out. So in order to make sure Alibombali Bombali got a satisfactory answer, I redid this as a standalone video.

Guilds are going to be a massive important of Ashes of Creation. Finding the right one, finding a good one, is going to be important depending on what your goals for Ashes of Creation are. There are a number of good guilds already established who are coming to Ashes, so it should be easy to find one that works for you.

  1. Good video. I'm extremely pro-guild. Several years ago I avoided guilds because I didn't understand the benefits and thought they would require a massive commitment. For some there can be a self-imposed barrier to prevent sharing personal information and this discourages them from using apps such as Discord.
    .
Just be confident in your own ability to only communicate on subjects you are happy with. Engaging with guilds is definitely the way to feel like you are part of something bigger. It doesn't take long to explain what level of commitment you can make (casual vs hardcore) and what sort of content (PvP, PvE, RPG, crafting, etc.) you want to get involved with. Then you will find plenty of people trying to help you with advice and in-game support. Occasionally there are jerks, but they tend to get kicked out of the group.

  2. Im personally gonna look closer to launch but taking Jahlon's advice not AT launch.
Its important to pick a guild that suits your playstyle, Intrepid have previously said that they do not want to repeat the problems archage had in terms of huge guilds taking full charge and that there will be rewards and reasons to be in a smaller guild. I personally prefer small/medium (30 – 100 active players) size guilds that value the community aspect alot more. Some people may want the huge guilds for their initial benefits such as the bonuses that come with guild ranks (the more members, the quicker your guild is going to rank up) and some people simply just dont care about the community aspect which is also fine if thats what they prefer.
Scope recruiters out and ask them questions too, what are the guilds goals, community aspects etc etc
Try to get in with the initial core group early to establish yourself as a good member to have around.

  3. That is your advice?
Putyourself out their and get good?

I've joined about 8 guilds that have been recruiting and I've already run into so much drama that 2 of the 8 already collapsed and had to restructure with new names and everything. Guilds are already setting up networks to spy on other guilds and everyone going into this game thinking that PvP will be minimized by some sort of 250 player limit is drinking the Intrepid koolaid.

So 250 players can participate without taking corruption penalties, but the other 750 defenders are going to be told kill them all or find a few guild. Open world PvP has no hard limits on what a zerg can or cant do. Even if the goal is showing up with 4000 players just so the enemy cant physically win because their PCs cant handle it.

My quick advice for people looking for a guild is ignore all the purity recruitment posts and figure out the core goals that you want to do. I personably made a chart that follows the 7 deadly sins when I look for a guild.

Lust – Guilds focused on collecting cosmetics and looking good or being social.

Greed – Guilds focused on dominating the market, trading, crafting, or grinding dailies for loot.

Gluttony – Guilds focused on growing, growing, growing. (these are the only guilds that spam the recruitment section)

Sloth – Guilds focused on memes and chilling with friends. Popular among streamers.

Wrath – Guilds focused on PvP, protect the innocent or destroy them. You wont find any carebears here.

Envy – Guilds focused on having something no other guild can get. Secret Devs?

Pride – A guild that focuses on their reputation. Honestly, integrity, or scumlords.

Anyway if you try joining a guild that picks up on more then one of these popular goals your going to have major leadership issues and a division of interests spreading the guild more thinly then most smaller communities can support. I could make an hour long documentary on guilds, leadership, and social networking but I'm just here to play games and leave interesting comments.

Thanks for the video, we really should be talking about the current community in specifics like this more and more if we want this game to succeed long term.

  4. I am really glad there will be a lot of emphasis on guild play in AoC. The political aspect of guild alliances, rivalries, and in-fighting has always been a very engaging aspects in old MMO's. I wonder what kind of in game representational aspects might show up. Such as, will you be able to upload a coat of arms /emblem for your guild, which can be displayed on your castle ect.

  5. Honestly the bigger the guild the more likely you'll get support in anything you need in game. Also the best guilds are the ones who don't take themselves too seriously if you aren't intending on spending all your time in the game.

  6. Massive guilds will ruin the game immediately. I'll roll on a small server to avoid the oligopoly, it's not a question of mechanics it's win trading and collusion that will destroy the experience. The reality is you can't be a outlaw with multiple orgs of 1000sbof people running around. I've played on enough unbalanced or zerg servers in my life to realise that game communities can't stop themselves from ruining games for them selves. Let the mega guilds be Kings of nothing with one castle each and cooperative agreements in place to avoid all conflict. Sounds "fun" I'd much rather be on a server where things develop in an organic matter that way there is at least a few months of genuine game play.

  7. there is also the fact that smaller guilds will have the option to spend their guild points in buffs and other stuffs than increasing the members cap of the guild, so smaller guilds will be individually stronger than massive guilds. Of course that doesn't mean a 20 people guild will be as good as a 700 people guild but it will help balancing size differences to a certain extend.
