The original EverQuest (during the EverCrack era 1999-2001ish) was like this and it was the best MMORPG experience I've ever had. The dumbing down of MMORPGs and making them more convenient and easier has ruined the genre. Things like portals everywhere, looking for group lists, maps that work like GPS (I used to draw out my own to keep track because there was no GPS map system in early MMOs), mobs that won't chase you down once you aggro them….all modern MMORPGs are cookie cutter.
As someone who has played a fair amount of BDO, the dreamhorses are as close to fast travel as you can get. I don't think it would take much more than 10-15 minutes to go from Ghrana to Valencia. I love the autopathing as it gives me time to check the status of my farms, workers, inventories, and marketplace. By the time that I do all that stuff, I am to where I want to be. One of the reasons that I quit playing SWOTR was that it was a jogging sim. I loved the story and characters, but I just reached a point where I could not stomach another 10 jog to talk to someone who gives me 3 lines and then I jog for 5 minutes to the next npc or whatever.
FFXIV had fast travel in 1.0 but it was very cumbersome to use. I am glad they switched to the modern system.
I do like, though, that there are no mage portals or warlock summons – when you see someone in an expansion city, they have unlocked it through gameplay.
ashes of creation is like a classic wow? So original 😍😍😍 i love pressing W for 30 minutes just to get to the town, its roleplay
Im 21 years old and i dont have a job
The answer to your question is very simple. Travelling is downtime when you are not playing the game.
So Ashes will work if –
1: The nodes levelling up with the players, means people don't have to shift zones to level, or quest.
2: If you do have to travel, say to do PvP, end game raids or world bosses, the rewards are sufficient to merit the travel.
One thing I do want to see is that flying mounts can always accompany at least a single passenger. Reason being in a massive open world pvp setting with limited and important players having flying mount access it seems natural to give them a "bodyguard" passenger to bring along; surely any dragon, or griffin could bear the extra weight. Log Horizon the MMO anime made me think of this
Do we know yet if there will be a way to flag and unflag for PvP or is it all PvP no matter what?
Thanks Narc, amazing video. You are a really good writer and speaker and I'm glad you stopped using memes: It was so awkward having such good quality videos being cut up by these 'icons of low effort'
Auto-pathing is not fun, it is horrible and a major turn off for me
7:08 dwarf yes, but a elf as a friend no that's not ok
I remember in Ragnarok Online the acolyte classes could save up to 4 different warp locations at a time just by standing at any given spot in the world. They would often sit in major cities and offer to warp players to points of interest for a fee. Sometimes there was a troll who would warp people to a location that they would be trapped in or insta die, so it had its flaws… but I did like that.
I like BDO's travel system, but it can get annoying when you travel to valencia and realize you forgot something in Gridania. ;w;
Travel time matters.
I just really hope they include some home-stone of any type.
Maybe it only works for your own house and you must be logged out for at least an hour or so – or just put a 12h cooldown on it or whatever.
Exploring is fun, but knowing that you have to end your exploration at 20h because you need to walk home for 3 hours if you wanna log out in your home for the next day just sucks balls.
Let's be fair here…the casuals (most of them at least) will be fine with no fast travelling as long as there is content around.
The folks constantly bitching are usually the guys who stand in (insert a hub in the game of choice) and bitch about a non-issue for 7 hours straight.
I'm not too old school of an MMO player but I was so excited to hear about the flight path feature. It's one of my favorite modes of fast travel, purely because of the views you get so see. When I played WoW I had specific paths that I liked. I would often choose slightly longer routes to walk if I knew I'd get a chance to take a short hop on one of my fave routes just because I enjoyed the view.
Unrelated but, you look hella sharper with a shaved head ngl.
Summoners should be able to summon their party with a 60 min cooldown. It feels super cool 😎.
How often do you leave ur house? Actual question.
Damn that’s a lot of pizza boxes and soda lol
Usually i dont like open world games without fast travel because it often doesnt make the game better. It just makes the time you have to waitbetween quests longer without filling it up with extra content. In this game however no fasttravel will be very inzresting for a pvp player like me. I guess giild will want to def mulriple nodes and depending on the distance between them theres some intresting strategical joice swith who defends what node etc when for exampme multiple nodes get attacked. Or u could fake attack a node, make players go there to def. Then your main army attacks another node so far away that they cant reach it in time to defend it. It could be very intresting in this game
Im excited to have a game where animals or walking are your only means of getting around, you won't miss it if you dont start out with it.
I am subscribed, and liking, and commenting.
yup, some form of limited fastish travel is fine, even required for the game not to become a walking simulator, but having to actually travel most of the time if you want to reach a location far away is good shit. maybe even give us some public transportish mechanic where we can travel with others to the same location
but proper autopathing is I think a must if we’re removing most fast travel options, a gameplay loop involving holding W for 30 minutes would get old very quickly. some smartly implemented autopathing (maybe you move a bit slower if autopathing vs holding W) sticking to roads and paths instead of a line straight through mountains and shit would do wonders for playability
bdo added balloon travel awhile ago, not 'fast' by the fastest drift hack horseriders out there, but faster than early horse/on foot
Fuck weight systems and FUCK BDO
I'm more committed to watch your videos than progressing my bdo character
My greatest concern is my friends taking an hour to get to each other just to play that day, then having to travel forever to get back to another friend later that day or the next day.
weight is pointless in bdo, you can put all of your trashloot on your horse and then put it back into your inventory when you leave, even if you are overweight as long as it's not in your horses inventory then your horse will move at full speed. There's also storage maids that are handed out like candy sometimes that let you transfer items to storage while farming, or even transfer stuff from the marketplace so you don't really have to prepare much once you've played the game for more than a month. I also believe fast travel is incredibly important to open world content. Archeage depends on fast travel for world events and the ability of players to group in one place quickly for some large event is part of what makes an mmo feel alive imo. bdo feels dead if you're not in a town, there's not much rewarding mmo-like content outside of node wars and you only see players every now and then while grinding. It's one of the reason I hate games without fast travel even though i have 1.5k hours in bdo, due to no fast travel some non weekly world bosses wont even be killed but rather you just have to fight it till it despawns for half rewards even though the game technically still has a substantial playerbase.
Dude what the hell are these pizzas and soda stuff. This is not """c00l""". U need help?
I completely disagree with your assessment of leveling being a focal point. Obviously endgame is king in the MMO world and that's fine, but some of us enjoy leveling alts and leveling in general.
I won't tough it out through a garbage leveling process for the promise of better endgame.
I totally agree that instantaneous travel is overall a bad thing, though. Open worlds are made to be traversed and explored.
As a person who likes mmo's but have a limited time frame. Like an hour a day. No fast travel. No play, walking for 45 mins and doing 1 quest is no good. Even 15 min auto run, I need to progress, if it is goes to slow I will not play it.
