Intrepid Studios has maintained the fact they want to have a Hybrid Tab/Action Combat system. After four years I still think this is too ambitious of a goal for a start-up studio. Not that start-up studios can’t do amazing things, but Intrepid Studios is already trying to pull off the Node System which is a huge feat of technology. They have maintained they are going to do it, so we have to of course dive into a discussion on Hitboxes, since without hitbox normalization we are going to end up with a game of midgets.

  1. What do u mean ppl will forgive the fact it is tab targeting combat if u have great game? What is there to forgive, tab combat is superior to action combat in MMOs. If i wanted to play FPS i would log CS and hurt my wrist trying to hit something…
    Just put tab targeting and make some spells/skills AoE skillshots and ppl will be happy. Many games have proven that u dont need good content if u have good combat (WoW, GW2 and similar)…
    No1 want to play MMO with action combat except few ppl who are used to it in singleplayer games like Oblivion and such… this is not that… this is MMO… just give it up…
    Thats my opinion and i stand by it. You all are welcome to prove me wrong….

  2. From what I got from the combat explanation from Intrepid, every targeted ability will use tab targetting, while action combat will only be used for AOEs (radius or cone).
    If you then say that those abillites only hit you when they hit your core (a small ball in the middle that even small characters fill out), and if the AOEs and cones don't care about your height (because you are not aiming up or down), then the character size shouldn't make any difference to combat.
    So all in all I think this video takes a too pessimistic view.

  3. Jahlon, Vindictus did physical benefits and penalties. Sure it doesn’t have dwarves and such, but basically the taller your character is, the longer their reach is but the slower they attack. Short character would have a slightly higher attack speed but a shorter reach (literally like length of their arms and the swords scale so they have to get in closer to make a hit). Again, it’s not much and it’s not perfect but just another example on top of the one you mentioned.

    I’ve spent too much money on the game to have them abandon action combat and go fully into tab. I don’t care that it’s the only good MMO on the horizon, I will not play it if that happens. I cannot stand tab target combat. I think tiny races should have never been a thing, but since they are, we need all hitboxes to be the same OR we need to balance going to extreme tall or extreme short somehow. It can be done. I’m only halfway through the video and I’m sure you’re going to bring up more good points so I’ll come back to this after.

  5. I'm not sure how I feel about hitboxes in AoC without testing the game. From my experience in other games, I hope there are no damage modifiers, i.e. headshots. I don't mind bigger races being easier to hit than smaller ones, as long as there's also a drawback for the smaller races, maybe being slower.

  6. How about the smaller the hit box, the harsher the RELATIVE stat penalty? Vise versa. Use percentages. If I make a small character and DO NOT want Intrepid to normalize hit boxes, I expect to have at least a 15-20% penalty to some stats. Give and take. Bam, it works. You've made a character decision and a trade-off was made while also making a mechanic work.

  8. Debuffing small character stats doesn't quite fix the issue. The problem to begin with only existed within the action combat system. Lower stats would affect your combat in tab and action combat.
