This video is a discussion about #AshesofCreation development cycle. We will take a look at how long and how much money a lot of the most popular MMOs spent on development. We will then compare that to where I think Ashes of Creation falls compared to others.

  1. SWTOR and ESO cost as much as they did because of voice acting. They both have tons and tons of fully voice acted content and both used some fairly high profile voice actors to do some of that content. Otherwise, their development costs would have been in line with the others.

  2. My guess for release is February 3rd, 2023. Everyone can guess a date and the closest person will win something! I will not be counting myself for winning, but just wanted to throw a date out there!

  3. July 4, 2023 FTW! Good points, well collated, and logically presented. I appreciate the fact that you minimized and de-emphasized personal speculation, unlike some other YT presenters who present such with overweening confidence and utter bombast, and were diligent about adding straightforward caveats to points for which no official public data is available. It must be remembered that SS and JCM started Intrepid with no background in game creation and have had to learn as they have gone along, a perpetual OJT as it were. Also, all software, and games in particular in my view, benefit greatly from the synergies generated by the close personal interaction of team members. These synergies result in increased production, faster problem solving, and enhanced creativity. While much progress was made during the year lost to Covid, I have no doubt but that the state of the game would be much farther advanced today had that scourge not descended upon us.

  5. To get the game released in 2023 I think they'll have to reduce scope. Trying to produce Naval content, underwater content and naval combat, Divine underground connecting catacombs and PVE, a military election combat system, much less all of the core gameplay systems that aren't fleshed out yet. I think if they hold to all of this we're looking realistically at the back end of 2024 if not pushing into 2025. I know they're hiring, but I expect not enough to produce all of the content they're currently aiming for on launch at the quality bar they have for their game. Could they release the game in 2023? Sure. Will they though, unlikely. They lean more towards being perfectionists.

We also saw today the impact Asmongold had playing FF14 for the first time and the server stress issues it brought. Intrepid will be monitoring how this projects to their game along with how New Worlds servers perform on launch.

I believe McP stated also recently that they had a large amount of work left ahead of themselves and are nowhere near having a finished product.

I tend to also lean more conservative with my date guess as its a way to temper my own expectations. People that set unrealistic date goals in their mind will only disappoint themselves over something they have no control over.

  6. March 7th 2023, 5pm Pacific. I really like Feb but planning for a small delay :D. I went with a Tuesday cause I think that would help with server deployment and people logging on. In my head if the game comes out on Friday that may result in to many people logging on all at once. Then also with the "early access" servers that would allow people in on Sunday giving them Sun/Mon to ensure the launch servers are good to go. GL everyone and great vid Bard!
