This video is a discussion about Time Gating vs Effort Gating in #AshesofCreation. These discussions are intended to bring up topics about the game so when we get into testing content for Ashes of Creation we can understand why something seems bad and be able to present ways to fix it. We will take a look at what each of these are and how they are generally used poorly in a lot of MMOs.
We will use information from the #AlphaTest as well as what we have been told by #Intrepid and Steven Shariff. The goal is to bring up as much relevant information as possible to open a discussion about content creation surrounding this game.
Alpha is when the community can have the most influence on the game through feedback so let me know what you think in the comments below!

What I fear most is that many of the game functions are not just Time/Effort gated, but that they are also population gated. If for some reason a server loses or never gains a large number of people things like a Siege become impractical or even impossible.
As long as sufficient people are around, there seems to be enough content available that something 'new' will always be available, and we aren't forced to raid the same damned boss 100x because no other node is developed enough.

Proposal….every time you are wrong in a video when you correct your content the beard undergoes a transformation (for that video at least). Example…. if you must officially admit defeat in the next video on the passive/active issue, you'll do so while wearing a beard with 2 braids.
Effort gating > Time gating 100%!

I'm completely ok with any Time Gating or Effort Gating mechanisms that are organic to gameplay. That is, they feel normal and natural in the course of regular play. I don't mind working through long sessions of rewarding gameplay, even months of it, to gain something worthwhile. Any Gating mechanic that is arbitrary or artificial ("We will make you wait just to prevent you from burning through the content so fast.") or those that are obviously designed to drive players to the cash shop (I'm looking at you, forthcoming game whose initials rhyme with North Wisconsin.) are totally unacceptable to me and would cause me to immediately stop playing. Time is the most valuable resource that I possess, and while I do waste too much of it myself, I am certainly not going to permit a mere game company to do so.
