This is one of the segments from my Ashes 101 Livestream that I do during the week. Now, I’m sure there are going to be people who love the idea of the dragons, and that’s ok, tell me WHY you love the dragons. There are going to be people who hate the idea of the dragons, and that’s ok, tell me WHY you hate the dragons.
One thing we don’t know is how these dragons are going to be in the final version of the siege testing. We do know that “Legendary NPCs will be present as commanders that act like mini raid bosses within the defending and attacking armies. Killing these provides added benefits, such as certain types of drops that grant battlefield benefits to either side.” but we aren’t sure exactly how that is going to work.
This is just one of the topics we get into during my twitch show. Swing by when I’m live and we can talk more about this, or any other Ashes of Creation topic.

Thank you for your flow of information!
looks cool, I'm gonna hop onto Aion classic to get my pvp fix tomorrow (assuming..servers dont die..they always do on launch day lol)
I genuinely agree with the things you say 😛
The dragon system does seem wonky but I do hope if they keep them, they at least make it fit better.
Just feels off at the moment. (DISCLAIMER I have not played the game, so truly I have not felt)
First of all, I'm glad you voiced your opinion because if we don't do that, we're never going to get a great game. However, I disagree about a few of the points you made. First, you start off arguing that Dragons are like MOBA's, so MMO players won't like it. Why? Why would an MMO player not like a mechanic from a genera that has made its name from good organized PvP? Before you attack me for being a MOBA and MMO player, I actually hate MOBA's, and the only multiplayer games I play regularly are MMO's (I find MOBA's toxic messes and I hate seeing my character's progress go away after a single match). This genre mixing doesn't make it a bad mechanic. Side note: You mention that Steven loves MOBA's, and I have never heard him mention liking them (link me source if I'm wrong please). I have heard him say he loved Archage (which you mentioned), and Lineage 2.
Second, the reason I think the Dragon's are a good mechanic, is I don't think that the castle sieges are supposed to be designed as a fully PvP mechanic. It is clear that this game is meant to have PvP and PvE combined as much as possible, so I would hypothesize that Castle Sieges are meant to show off the best guild on the server from both a PvP and PvE perspective. So guilds that can take down bosses quickly can possibly have an advantage here, or even you could bring players who are focused (and geared/skilled) on PvE into a PvP setting. Battlegrounds, as made popular by WoW, may still make it into the game so those who enjoy PvP only can have their little zone, but I doubt it. I think it would be better to push for more instanced PvP outside of Arena's rather than trying to get a core mechanic from one of the games core features removed.
Finally, and self-admittedly the weakest of my arguments, from a lore perspective the Dragon's could make sense. Perhaps the timer for when Castle Sieges are active is because that's how long it takes a dragon to grow and migrate to their nests near the castle (and there is some lore reason they have to be located there). This would make the reason for the siege to be gaining a foothold near their nest and being able to exploit those creatures as a resource, or even that if the dragons are not taken out, they will destroy the castle.
I just think it is hilarious that so many hardcore PvE players upset at the PvP systems encroaching on their territory, and now a hardcore PvP player (which you are since you mentioned enjoying EVE online) is whining about a little PvE encroaching on your territory. I almost want to be like one of those dads and be like "too bad, you'll sit down, you'll play the game, and you'll like it!" I truly believe that these two things are not mutually exclusive and that they only appear so right now because games these days basically just have a choice between instanced PvP or instanced PvE with no chance to see how much fun it would be to mix them. Look at an example from Classic WoW: the dangers of traveling from your capital city to a dungeon with your party. Or here is one from EVE Online: you are killing rats in a wormhole and get ganked by a stealthy ship. Both of these games have done well for themselves and my fondest memories from both are largely made up of situations where the chaotic nature of the open world combined with both PvE and PvP to make a truly memorable PvX experience.
Thanks for the video, timers mechanic sounds cool, but probably not for this feature. Maybe it can be used somewhere else (or even in another game).
You got my attention when you started talking about stopping the clock and speeding up the clock. I love it. Yeah, sleep can wait lol.
I must agree that the dragons should be removed, they make little sense in the MMORPG castle siege theme.
Like the idea of points of ineterest where u do something to benefit ut side but should not be dragons
You've got some great ideas here on the fly! I like the tower idea with half/double time instead of the dragons. Map it out and let Steven know!
I would honestly rather see the dragons be replaced with smaller fortresses that reduce the defending teams resource pool, but if Steven is dead set on this version of siege then I'd replace those dragons with golems.
WoW's wintergrasp had the three towers which would take time off the total time just as a flat reduction, I think a mechanic like that is definitely welcome. Wintergrasp was generally quite enjoyable back in the day although I hope that ashes would build on this.
why does it sound like the castle siege has very little to do with the castle itself
Hardcore guilds are a pain in the ass, they're all airheads so the game won't lose much if they don't stay 🙂
